Camping on a Ski Slope - Vermont Backpacking

Section Hiking on the Vermont Long Trail - Appalachian Gap to Lincoln Gap.
For this backpacking trip, my dog Denali & I will be doing a 2 day, 1 night camping trip in Northern Vermont. The specific area we’ll be camping near is called the Stark’s Nest, on a section of the Long Trail between Appalachian Gap and Lincoln Gap, 40 mins west of Montpelier, VT.
For an easier read, check out my full blog post here: www.sintax77.com/vermont-long-...
The Vermont Long Trail is a 273 mile, long distance hiking trail that runs the entire length of Vermont, from the southern border with MA all the way north to the Canadian border. The first hundred miles in the south coincide with the Appalachian Trail as well. I’ll be backpacking and camping just a short bit of the Long Trail - an 8 mile section in the North Country of Vermont on private land & the Green Mountain National Forest.
GPS Data for this trip can be found on my Trip Data Page.
www.sintax77.com/trip-data/
Or in the blog post linked above.
Includes full track data for each day, and way-points for campsites used, water sources, etc.
Trailhead Used:
Appalachian Gap Trailhead Parking Area - 44°12'39.7"N 72°55'53.5"W
Large, paved parking area on SR17. The Long Trail South (which I took in the video) is on the opposite side of the road. The Long Trail North (which I didn't take) is located right in the corner of the lot, by the guardrail.
Trails Used & Itinerary, Day 1:
Park at the Appalachian Gap Trailhead
Take Vermont Long Trail South (located on the other side of the road. Look for the white blaze
Arrive at Stark’s Nest warming hut and grab some water from the rain barrel.
Note: Stark’s Nest is a ski hut. In winter, it’s used to take a break & warm up in between ski runs at Mad River Glen Ski Resort. While this is private property, it’s kept open & available to hikers year round as a place to break or camp for the night while hiking the Long Trail. There is a rain barrel out front for a water source & a composting outhouse is nearby.
Set up camp down the ski slope near Stark’s Nest
Day 1 Mileage: 3 miles
Day 1 Gross Elevation Gain: 1,501′
Day 1 Gross Elevation Descent: 283′
Trails Used, Itinerary Day 2:
Leave camp and head back uphill to the Stark’s Nest.
Continue south on the Vermont Long Trail.
End at the ski lift area on Mt Ellen for a break and some views.
Backtrack out the way you came, via the Long Trail North.
Arrive back at the Stark’s Nest.
Breakdown camp, pack up and replenish water supplies.
Backtrack out on the Vermont Long Trail North.
Arrive back at the Appalachian Gap Trailhead Parking area.
Day 2 Mileage: 8 miles (5 round-trip for Mt Ellen, 3 for the hike out from Stark’s Nest)
Day 2 Gross Elevation Gain: 1,566′
Day 2 Gross Elevation Descent: 2,919′
Trip Totals:
Grand Total Mileage: 11 Miles
Grand Total Elevation Gain: 3,067'

I have made the two can stove with the wick, but now I rock a vienna sausage can with the carbon mat wick in the bottom. I punched holes a half inch down for the flames, and smaller ones lower down for air intakes. 7 grams or so.

My old stomping grounds. I grew up skiing there and have done a similar hike up the Jerusalem Trail (you passed the intersection on your way to Mt. Ellen) just to hang out at the Starks Nest. The sunset over the Adirondacks is great from behind the chairlift as is the sunrise from the deck over the Whites. Glad to see they put in the rain barrel, used to have to go south to the above mentioned intersection to a spring. I also have a canine hiking buddy, a golden named Piper. Great video, also enjoyed the one from Zion! "WIDG" LT '03 NH 48 4K

If anyone is interested in the free pillow, there is a $10 shipping and handling fee. Also be careful while making your order, if you reload the page or go back to the previous page you will be double charged, and if you click on any of the additional purchases it will immediately add it to your order. I have been charged a total of $100 and am currently trying to contact outdoor vitals and cancel one of the orders.

The cost of the pillow is included in the "shipping charge". That is a deceptive marketing practice. Another problem with the "Outdoor Vitals" company is their email practices. They seem to be spammers. Even though I did not complete the form needed to receive the "free" pillow, they had enough info to begin sending me emails without my permission. I clicked the unsubscribe link in one email, but continued to receive spam from them. I just clicked the unsubscribe link again, so I will see if they stop spamming me. I will be saying more about it if they for a second time ignore my attempt to unsubscribe.

Besides weather forecast apps, I use radar apps like Raindar. If you have internet connectivity on your phone, it will show where the rain clouds actually are and which direction they are going. Even if you have a huge chance of rain, radar apps can sometimes show where there are "holes" in the rain so you can plan when to take cover and when to make a run for it before the next wave hits.

Hey man! I’ve been a fan of yours for years! Your first Pemi Loop video started it all and I’ve been following you ever since. Most comments I’ve wanted to leave were mostly fanboy type things, so I’ve restrained myself. I know you get enough of those... haha. However, I wanted to add to your t-shirt pillowcase idea... I’ve been using a klymit inflatable pad with an awesome Nemo pillow for a couple of years now and I love them both. However, with both products being made of pretty slippery material, I would always have troubles with my pillow slipping off the pad during the night. So a while back, I started putting my pad up inside the T-shirt as if the pad were a body with no arms. Then I tuck my pillow up inside the T-shirt and it keeps it from slipping up or off to either side. Works like a charm, adds no extra weight, and makes sleeping in a tent (I’m still not on board with hammock camping) that much more bearable. I dunno when you’ll be sleeping in a tent next, but give this trick a whirl next time and see if it works for you! Keep up the awesome work, man! It’s really been great to watch your page grow and I’m always eager to see where you’re off to next! Peace, Brother!

So I wasn't aware of this till I was searching rei while watching this video but apparently toaks makes an alcohol stove. Its a bit spendy especially compared to the cat food stove but since you're into that type of stove I thought that I'd pass that bit of knowledge on.

Very considerate of you not taking the trail magic. Great character! A lot of day hikers pig out at some trail magic coolers. If you get a burn mark on picnic tables cut a piece of aluminum foil the size of the bottom of your pot and put it under the stove. The bottom of the fancee feast gets very hot obviously.

I see youre using the optic a lot more. How do you like it compared to the Ohm? You take a bit of a weight penalty, but probably not enough to offset the breathable back???

I’ve been watching your videos for a while now, do you have any suggestions for people with shoulder issues . I had my right replaced and the left has some serious issues. I also had spinal fusion but, still want to section hike the long trail. What would be a good pack for a woman like myself . I am 57 years old

I'm also put off by OV's claim that "shipping" is $9.99. For a four ounce first class mail including a padded envelope, shipping is under two bucks. Maybe they're allocating another eight bucks in "handling" and "overhead", but that's still bogus. Let's be honest, and just call it a heavily discounted pillow. The bogus "free" makes them look like real cheats. Even if they said five dollars shipping, I wouldn't have called it totally unreasonable. But $9.99? WalMart, Amazon, Ziplock....
