Winter fishing the Canning River - worth it?

Ep 10 - Swan River Snapshots Fishing - CASING THE CANNING RIVER - I have a few challenges planned on the Swan, but they involve me kayaking parts of it I haven’t been on for ages. Therefore, fishing’s taking a back seat to exploration this week, as I hop in the trusty Red Devil Tarpon and set out to survey the Canning River.
Of course, I simply HAVE to take a rod, so if I achieve my exploration objective, of course I’ll chuck in a line. Will I catch anything in the Canning - where I traditionally catch more in the summer? Or will the cold waters of winter thwart me? Let’s find out!
ABOUT THE SERIES:
In Swan River Snapshots, I move around the mighty Swan River (Western Australia), fishing brief sessions. Not every angler has hours to spend, so my hope for this series is to chuck in a line when I can, narrow my focus and answer some questions that our magnificent river has left me with.

Good vid mate nice one! Love that stretch of the canning and yep very hard in colder months but holds some serious bream in the warmer months. The pipeline is a good spot just up from Shelley bridge 👍🏼

Cheers mate! Yeah the summer breaming is good, and was surprised to get anything at all in winter! Didn't hit the pipeline this time, but will be soon 👍🐟

Cheers mate. I'm between light rods at the moment, and the temu rod makes a great stop-gap solution. Surprised at the quality for the price!

Awesome video mate! I was thinking that would be a great spot to have a poke around on the yak when I was down there recently! Do you think the weir helps with a slower tide flow than on the swan?

Cheers mate! Definitely worth a paddle and a fish. I'll be heading back and really giving it a crack when I get time in a few weeks. I do think the weir affects the tide a fair bit, but even so, the tide changed while I was on the water and the flow looked very slow, even on the run-out. Interesting part of the world that I look forward to exploring more 👍

I'm willing to give it a try. At my wit's end with the swan. I see pictures of people catching things in the Swan but I refuse to believe there are actually fish here. I can't use soft plastics because blowfish shred them instantly. I can't use bait because blowfish....I use hardbody lures and get nothing. It's exasperating.

Totally understand mate - it can be frustrating at times, especially when you can't go out during ideal hours when blowies are inactive. I have more than my fair share of donut sessions too. There are certainly less (none in some areas) up the Canning, but it can be difficult. Prawn baits should entice more than a few though. Good luck!

Use small mussels if you can get them. Slide the hook in through the gap in the shell (good vid on here, how to). Bream, pinkies etc will smash straight through the shell while the blowies can't.
