Winter Camping In Bubble Wrap Shelter

I tried this out to see what would happen in a closed campground if I just wrapped a gazebo tent frame with bubble wrap for a camping shelter. It was an interesting night, with freezing temperatures, and strong winds. Things didn't go quite to plan, as usual... but I adapted and survived the adventure trying to camp in bubble wrap.

There’s so much over produced junk out there with flashy edits and loud sounds, effects, and music. This is just raw, essentially nearly unedited for the most part and obviously more realistic. That’s probably why it’s so calming. It’s relatable and sort of calms the nerves at the end of the day at least for me. That’s my theory anyway

    @@ozorhaar9575 oh my friend, let me tell ya about camping. I grew up camping with my parents often. We didn't do much cold weather stuff until my sister and I were older. But it was always the BEST time! Always an adventure no matter where we were. Sometimes we'd pack our head in a few miles deep on trails, others we would just hit camp sites. It was always so wholesome. There's always little issues but you end up laughing at the end of the day. Food on a campfire can't be bested. And the quality time with family and friends is better than anything! Camping is 100% worth it. It's therapeutic. I've never done the fancy trailer or RV camping. Always tents, makeshift shelters, things of that nature. I definitely recommend. And now that I have a little boy of my own, I've been taking him out and he has an absolute blast. The dirt, the scrapes, the cuts, the bruises from tearing through the woods, he loves it, so I love it as well! I truly hope you do get out there and experience it. The silence, the animals, the fresh air, the primal nature of the entire situation is the best medicine in this world! Stay safe, and remember the most expensive gear isn't always best. Fleece and wool are great for cold weather. Fleece dries quickly when wet. And wool is the only material on earth that will keep you warm if you somehow manage to get it wet. Plan your trip, and make sure at least someone knows you're going out. Just in case something goes bad.

I was projecting LOL I think I would’ve crawled into the back of my car during the night to stay warm and then maybe set my camera up and crawled into the sleeping bag for the morning shots. Pretty sure you could see him moving around in there during the time lapse. 👍🏽

    Even if you can't stake down the tent, you need to do SOMETHING to keep it from blowing away! Especially a tent with no floor like that one. A full tent at least has the weight of your equipment (and you, when you're in it) to keep it in place. You could have tied some lines to the campfire grill, and the camp table and benches. Maybe find a nice rock and tie that to a tent leg. But you can't just do nothing. Those popup tents blow away with the lightest breeze. Still, great video. Good experiment. I wouldn't think bubble wrap would be a great choice (other than survival situation like you said) but it's great to see confirmation like this. Your channel rocks, keep up the good work!

  • @idaiki
    @idaiki2 жыл бұрын

    From a frozen northern Maine USA to Steve. I was happy to see you try this, 2 suggestions from winter survival training. If you have a pop-up tent, build it as short as possible it reduces the amount of space needed to be heated. also carry 2" or longer lag screws for the feet, easy enough to put into even frozen ground. Lastly, like you did, Hunker down. Good Video anyway!

    Hey Steve, I can really help you out I think. I am big user of duct and gorilla tape, but as you know it does not always work. Nurses and hospitals use a tape , generally just called silk tape. You can get in in drug stores. comes in, 3/4 up to 3 inch width. Sticks great and has fibers thru it so it's pretty strong. I carry it in tackle box, car, tool box, and usually in a shirt or coat pocket. In the cold it is easy to work with, can tear it with bare hands. When I saw the wind I started shouting at you to go get the silk tape. Love your videos , lets try the bubble wrap again.

    This is possibly the greatest episode yet. The failure was spectacularly comedic. Thank you Steve for making me laugh. Appreciate you.

    Kudos to you Steve for posting something that turned into a border line disaster. Not going to lie I enjoyed every failure along the way.

    He has had lots of border line disasters - that's what we love about him. He slogs on through and actually stays with it through the night.

    My lord, I wish I had one tenth of your patience. The minute one of those sections separated, I would be cussing, packing up and heading home. You're a good man, Steve.

    Next week: Steve scrambles out of a vacant carwash by full washers coming on! Gets chased out of a 24 hour laundry by an irate small business owner! Has to duel a park Ranger and gets chased by a Mountie ala 1980's Benny Hill style! And finally.... Gets eaten by a Sasquatch!

    You know, you've really been slugging it out through some real garbage nights, Steve. You know what I'd love to see as a follow-up? You and beautiful wife camping out in your own damn living room with a cobbled-together pillow and blanket fort. Just a good time out of the cold, for once. You've more than earned it!

    For anyone using those tents in the future, I ran a farmers market stall with one and the wind can be your worst enemy. My go to fix was a few milk jugs filled with water bungie corded on opposite corner legs. In colder temps like this, you could also fashion a weight with pvc pipe and a filler like cement or sand. There are also store bought weights, but making them can be cheap enough if you have the materials arround. Also dropping the top a little can also reduce the lift the wind produces. Great Content as always steve, hope you're nice and warm now.

    I do the farm markets as well and I use those corkscrew stakes for dogs to anchor my tent, it has held down in a fairly strong wind on the ocean shore.
