    I wouldn't dream of bringing a dehydrated meal out, part of the fun for me is the meal. Not that I'm doing haute cuisine, Spam, Corned beef (the price of steak) tins of curry with pasta or noodles then a fry up in the morning. McCains Gastro chips do quite well in the pan if you have a steak. I'm not convinced about the moisture-in-the-mat argument because the humidity in the air is already in 90s! I don't blow a mat up by mouth because my head gets light and I see stars. 🤯

    It depends for me. If I wasn’t typically carrying 2-3kg of camera kit I’d cook proper food more often. Corn beef hash would be a great one to do. Tin of corn beef, tin potatoes, onion, butter. Delicious.

    Honestly I think my phone's bad at listening and then showing me what I've been talking about, now you're at it too! A while ago my wife bought me those camp slippers and the next day you did a video on them, then I looked at that candle one day and it was in your gear picks the next. Last two days we were wild camping in the Cairngorms and one night had firepit meals and the next well it wasn't steak but Co-op quiche and humous and oatcakes with a Wispa chaser. However we had a long conversation about wild cooking but how to actually do so and try not to compromise too much on adding extra weight! We're off on a 700k mission on bikes in May and hoping to pull together some culinary ideas. I think that you should do a few more suitable for multiday!

  • @StephenJReid

    @StephenJReid

    Interesting idea! I guess it depends just how “proper” you want your cooking to be. If it’s more than just heating or boiling stuff, really need a decent pan. Most lightweight camping pans aren’t good for Proper cooking.

Thinking about the food...when I did Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions in late 1970s we cooked dry meals made by Vesta...after over 8 hours of hiking they tasted lovely..for coffee I used a plastic bag filled with spoonfuls of coffee sugar and dried milk,worked well... Very best wishes from really old me

    Thanks for the comment Andy 🙂 You're right any hot food tastes amazing after a long day hiking. So basically you made your own instant coffee mixes in the 70s, ahead of the game, I buy those premade now by Nescafe. I never got to do the Duke of Edinburgh Award, its a big regret as I really wanted to but my school had limited places. With me coming in from a rural village, my bus meant we were the last ones in and too late to get a place on the list.

    I use summit to eat meals for majority of my camps purely for weight and space I use them a lot so I bulk buy and get them a little cheaper but a few times in the summer I'll take fresh food just as a luxury on a easy camp because it does weigh more and with a frying pan it takes more space.ive just got the new pump but the thermarest adapter wouldn't fit so I had to shave a little of the plastic off the inside so people need to check that it fits before going out for a camp.

    It is a myth that you get mould inside a t by blowing into it. It is a myth that blowing into a mat affects thermal comfort.So a pump in search of a solution. HOWEVER!!! If it is also a power bank and light then possible worth it, especially if you can't be arsed to blow up the mat yourself!

  • @StephenJReid

    @StephenJReid

    Жыл бұрын

    I tried to research both of those and got conflicting information for each, so maybe some truth to both. Moist air apparently does conduct heat better than dry air so the thermal affect seems more likely to be true. Personally I’ve never had mould in my mat but I’ve seen photos. At any rate, being able to easily inflate inside my tent and having it as a light make it useful and something I forgot to mention was it’s really handy for deflating too.
