I am starting to like this more and more, it is probably the best 2man draft format I have seen so far. I think if I try this IRL with normal packs I am gonna try to do it with 120 cards instead of 90, because as you said at this point you dont have any decision in deck building really

I actually did have the “non-fox” clause come up in a draft. 😂 I couldn’t remove their only creature! I still won after drawing another removal spell, but it almost cost me the game.

It can be annoying that the Bodyguard can't remove Zirda. Although if they lead with Basalt Monolith before playing Zirda, then Bodyguard still wouldn't have been able to stop them from making infinite mana even if it could exile foxes.

Lot of fun to see the unique cards in the cubes used for these winston drafts.

There should be a rule in Winston where you can't cast Minsc and Boo on turn 2. Just feels illegal.

Really like the addition of Winston Wednesday. You play up to 3 separate opponents but with 3 different decks.

From the title alone this is gonna be very satisfying

At 42:50, can't you hold up Get Lost to kill a lifelinker if your opponent activates Arwen, or to use on Avacyn's Pilgrim post combat if your opponent doesn't use Arwen. You have 14 damage the next turn with land + Bristly Bill activation, so you can just win as long as they don't gain 9 life or have an untapped blocker.

Loving this series. Quick turnaround, silly games. That last deck was killer. Only feedback I would give would be slow down the draft just *slightly* to make sure you point out each card in the pack. There were many times you saw one good card you like and just picked the cards. Most times you addressed what else was in the pack but I can remember a few times where I had no clue what were the other 2 cards in the three card pack 😂

Thx zac; I did watch that beginning section multiple times. For me the problem seems to be the pacing. Usually I can follow luis‘ verbalized thoughts before every pick, but this format is so fast 😅

To me the draft portion is not very fun to watch either. It's very fast, and LSV doesn't dwell on what the opponent might be doing or signals or whatever. Maybe those things don't matter much in Winston, or maybe he doesn't take the time. It makes the draft portion feel like solitaire. Also maybe the number of cards is too small, because it's often 4-5 color whatever and you're not really choosing a lane and trying to determine what is open. A larger pool would enable that and make it less scrappy. However the gameplay is fun to watch, so I'm not changing my daily routine over it.

I think the draft portion of Winston is less interesting to watch than the draft portion of traditional. That said, I still find it interesting and it goes fast. I think one per week is just about right.

It probably helps to have experience with this format. I've done a lot of Winston cube drafts over the years, and I've been enjoying these tremendously. It's definitely a less complicated format than traditional team cube. But it's so cool to finally see someone (esp LSV) doing these drafts. I had no idea how anyone else thought about their picks.

These are so great.

LSV has a very optimistic way of playing Magic. When drafting "oh this could be good with X or if I pick up Y." When playing "OK if I draw Z here that would be excellent." The proof is in the pudding that this is a successful strategy and mindset. The result of the mindset is that LSV is always playing to his outs. I think the optimism may hurt his Winston draft a bit however. At 1:23:00 for example stating he needs color fixing lands more than anything and then snapping off Bitter Triumph rather than checking out the other two stacks. Not saying this was necessarily a mistake, but LSV in general seems to often value (overvalue?) his optimism for what he sees in pile 1 over optimism for for what could be in piles 2 and 3.

well, think about it. If a pack has 2-3 cards, that means that his opponent skipped on the first/second card. and because lands are such high picks, those piles are unlikely to contain lands.

It definitely feels like he picks piles a little higher than his opponents on average. Really not clear to me who is doing it better.

If you just kill othari while BK is tapped out isn't that the same as killing it on his turn, I guess the thought process was to not let him have access to map tokens pre combat, also easy for me to say that in hindsight of the remand.

Conventional wisdom is to save your removal until the last possible second because you want the most information possible before you cast removal. However, in this situation LSV was dead on board if Othari attacks, so he really should have killed it when BK was tapped out. I think that was just classic instincts taking over.

I thought it was funny how that game 1 with Lurrus was the illustration of how powerful it is to have Lurrus and Lotus in your opening hand together instead of Lurrus in companion zone, while also being the super rare opening hand that could have cast Lurrus from the companion zone and recast Lotus.

Maybe we should change it from Winston Wednesday to Winston Weekdays and just do it on days of the week.

Nah, it would grow stale quickly. It's a good format to shake things up, but the format doesn't support a lot of the archetypes that keep regular Cube drafts interesting. Once a week feels about right, to me.
