Wings | Animated Short Film | SVA Thesis
Фильм және анимация
In this story of kindness, friendship, and the fear of being left behind, a friendship takes flight as a mouse that wants to fly and an injured bird cross paths.
Final film from the School of Visual arts. I directed, background painted, animated, and did about half of the cleanup/coloring myself! The rest was handled by my awesome team in the credits. Thank you to Colin Andrew Grant for the fantastic score, and thanks to SVA for the two grants that helped me produce this film!
And thank you all so much for watching. This was a huge labor of love for me, and I'm so glad I finally get to share it!

comment answering some frequently asked questions!! - can I repost this? - NO. Unless you're doing some sort of analysis (reaction video, discussion video,) just posting a small clip, or we otherwise came to an agreement, I do not give permission for Wings to be reposted anywhere. the only "official" places Wings is posted are KZread, Vimeo, and my personal facebook page. -what are their names/genders? the mouse is Nutmeg and the bird is Bluebell, and they're both girls :D - what program did you use? - TVPaint! - how long did this take? - about a year! It was my senior thesis film at SVA - how did a string end up wrapped around the bird's wing? - i dunno, it happens sometimes with fishing line

Have you seen Burrow? I don't even bring it up to claim that one is better than the other, but they are similar and are both stunning in their own ways. I don't get the modern day assertion that the entirety of Disney is somehow artistically bereft.
@Remyfox819
Жыл бұрын
It's primarily due to Disney's current obsessiveness over political pandering. Rather than focusing on good stories, characters and ideas, Disney is completely focused on identity politics, diversity and anything that fits the narrative of Twitter users. Pandering to these people has resulted in their films bombing again and again and losing money tremendously in the process. I haven't seen this Burrow, but I will look it up later.
@matthewjones6786

@@Remyfox819 Ah, that makes sense, and I often agree! I don't defend the company, its business practices, or its ethics, I just find myself defending their artists. I dunno, I guess it seems a shame to write off Disney when there's so much passionate work and meaningful art even beneath the politics or an overall bad product. Anyway, Burrow and a lot of the other Disney shorts are pretty cool, the artists seem to have more freedom to experiment. Also highly recommend Loop, which I feel is a great instance of inclusivity done right. :)

Gosh I love this so much- I especially liked the movement and expressions. They were both really emotive and you could tell exactly what was going through their minds at any given scene, which is super important. I like the very mild anime undertones. The way the birds mouth gets all squiggly, many of the gestures and moments, the whole aesthetics of the characters. It's just got those small quirks you see in Japanese animation that's great for conveying small cute moments and stuff. Very pleasing to the eye.

@@otilialefey8514 then what were you watching? It's about courage, bravery, kindness, friendship, gratitude, wishing, joy and happiness. You must be very young and nieve. Don't know if you ever heard the Aesop's story about "The Lion & the Mouse". The animation's overall concept is like that Aesop's story. As for friendships lasting forever is an extremely rare thing. As you age the friends you made makes new friends and so do you. This process is always ongoing which is a part of life. In the animation I'm sure their friendship will last until something ends it like no food for one of them so one has to leave to find food or water. Distance is usually a real killer to end friendships and relationships. The other variable to end a friendship is death. So the reality here is very real.

This is both absolutely adorable and extremely pretty! The characters are so cute and you gave them so much expression and life! I love how you kept the whole animal thing with the bird cocking it’s head but also the scarf and book. The animation is so smooth and the backgrounds are beautiful. I adore this so much ❤️ it came out AMAZING

This feels like a nostalgic children's book that I used to read, it's animated well the animation is on point and theres so much emotion put in this animation and on top of that, it's very heartwarming 10000/10 Perfect

I love these little films. They are so heartwarming.
I love Nutmeg and Bluebell's friendship. I teared up when Bluebell offered her wing so that Nutmeg could get on and experience what it means to fly. This is so sweet, touching, and heartwarming. Thank you for sharing your thesis with us, Casey. I wish there were movie-length projects like this for us viewers to consume. Your project symbolizes a return to simpler, happier, gentler times.
I love that the robin's voice was actually the calls and sounds of an American Robin and not just generic "bird". In particular, the alarmed chirping when the mouse jumps on the wing to remove the string. That's actually the sound a robin makes when something has spooked it.

This is adorable! The story isn't really original or surprising, but it's cute and works. What I like most about this is that you understand everything without a word being said. Recently I heard when the viewer understands what's going one and the emotions while watching an animation without sound it's a sign that it's pretty good. That works well here. I like the drawings, too. Reminds me of old cartoons. Feels warm

You pretty much know beat for beat what's going to happen in the story. That's not to say it's bad by any means and I highly doubt that's what Akefia is suggesting.
