WING IT - The Animation School

We are proud to announce that AnimationsSA has rewarded graduates of The Animation School the 2012 GRAND PRIZE for "WING IT" in the Short Film category as the Best Short Film. "WING IT" also won Awards for Best Character Animation, Outstanding Technical Achievement, and Best Visual Execution.
This Short Film Animation Project has been created by 3rd year students of The Animation School to gain vital work experience.
They study more about scripting, on-set production which includes post production where such skills
as editing, sound recording, special effects creation and compositing are learned.
Credits at the end of this Animated Short Movie.
Special thanks to The Rooftop Recording Studio for the Original Score & Music Production.

I know the idea was that the aliens help input ideas into the human's head, but I also think that this animation shows the true strength and creativity of humans. Clearly the little aliens thought he was going to fail. They put in 'how to make a boat' into his head - not a plane! But yet, he still makes an aircraft, against all the odds of the aliens thinking he's gonna fail, HE DOES IT! I think this shows the true creativity and strength of humans in their inventions.

Well done! Very imaginative and mixing the boat building with aircraft making was funny. We know it wouldn't really work but this is a cartoon and anything goes.
And so, Sherman finally succeeded in building an aircraft that would work, and the two aliens under their mentor succeeded in their mission of giving him the inspiration of how the aircraft could be built! It was very enjoyable watching this.
Why I cried when seeing the wings soak up the sky?!

Till now, we have already maken machines by mimic fish and birds, which have maken life so convenient. If we mimic other animals and flora and fauna to make different kinds of machines, then what kind of world we will experience? Couldn't stop to imagine.

We made this using maya, characters were designed on paper and then box-modelled and textured in photoshop. As for tutorials, there are a lot out there,but character design is a seriously deep topic and really needs to be approached from many angles (sculpting, anatomy, drawing etc). you should look for tutorials that deal with the fundamentals first. Vlippu offers an outstanding course of drawing and figure anatomy, that would be a good place to start.

haha yeah it was fairly long. But not as bad as one might think. We rendered on about 40 imac dual cores, render time was around 5 mins per frame (on one machine) for the character pass, 15 mins per frame for the backgrounds.
