Wing Chun Chi Sao-How It Works, Why It's Used-Core JKD Wing Chun Technique

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Ming details the Wing Chun Chi Sao, how it works, and why it's trained even today-and where it is effective in fights. He also shows why Bruce Lee had to modify aspects of Wing Chun for greater functionality vs a larger variety of opponents.

I’ve always noticed a lot of fencing-esque movements in wing chun...it’s like fencing with your hands-boxing has also been described this way. This also reminds me a lot of push hands type exercises. I suspect chi sao may contain principles derived from weapon use (perhaps spear/staff, as well as swords, etc.). I know wing chun has staff and sword forms, notably the paired butterfly swords. Of course there is also the striking and (occasionally acknowledged) grappling application. These skills could be very useful in a clinch/guard situation, in addition to a standing fist fight. Arms always end up entangled, whether you’re wrestling or trying to avoid being shot or stabbed. There are also the similarities to certain Kali knife techniques, etc. Interesting stuff...I always enjoy the comparative/conceptual analysis or “theory” side of things.

I consider it to be offensively defensive. Defend the same way that you strike, with quickness and precision. I've been combining 52 blocks with a little bit of Chi Sao for the redirection of energy. A punch is only really strong in one direction, the direction it's traveling. Deflections are easy from all other angles.

Simplicity is a must to understand the merit of any application of Wing Chun. I fight as a south paw which is ignored by 99.9 percent Wing Chun practitioners. Knowing your opponents leverage as right or left is a must to go further with any application
