Wine Review: Vivaldi Valpolicella Ripasso 2020

For today's Wine-Searcher tasting our Wine Director, David Allen MW, finishes his look at wines from the Valpolicella region - made using the appassimento technique - by examining the Ripasso style. The wine tasted is the 2020 vintage of the Vivaldi Valpolicella Ripasso.
N.B. David spends so long talking about the way the wine id made that he forgets to mention that the wine is a blend of three local varieties, Corvina, Corvinone & Rondinella - sorry we couldn't find the proportions comprising the blend.
The Vivaldi brand was created by Cantina Valpolicella Negrar, to bring together and represent the wines from the principal Veronese wine regions - Soave, Valpolicella, Custoza and Bardolino. Using the name of the great Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi, evokes a desire for the brand to be innovative and creative
Cantina Valpolicella Negrar was created when seven founder members signed the deed of incorporation of the Cantina Sociale Valpolicella, on 23rd August 1933. They won their first awards for their wines in 1935.
In 2004 the Cantina Sociale Valpolicella became Cantina Valpolicella Negrar. In 2023 when they celebrated their 90th anniversary they had 240 vine-growing members with more than 700 hectares of vineyards in Valpolicella Classico region.
The cooperative is an important producer of appassimento wines and Cantina Valpolicella Negrar boasts the largest drying room in Northern Italy.
