Spirits Review: Teremana Small Batch Tequila Reposado
For today's tasting Wine-Searcher's Wine Director, David Allen MW, tries a Reposado Tequila from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson' celebrity tequila brand - the tequila is Teremana Small Batch Tequila Reposado.
N.B. at 3.28 David says fermentation goes on in copper... stills. It is of course distillation that occurs in the stills! the spirit will be fermented twice in these stills. Evidently fermentation actually takes place in open tanks.
Teremana is a brand of Tequila launched in 2020 by Hollywood film star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, his manager and other business partners. The range comprises a Blanco, a Reposado and an Anejo.
The Tequila is made in the Jalisco Highlands. 100 percent brick oven roasting is designed to bring out the citrus flavors of the agave. Three days of roasting before shredding extracts the juices. After open tank fermenting, Teremana is distilled in copper stills handmade on-site by local tradesmen.
Left over agave fibers produce organic compost for the agave fields. A state of the art filtration system cleans the waste water for re-use.

Which tequila is better in your opinion, Patron or Teramana?

Of the two tequilas I tried, the Teramana was a Reposado and the Patron was an Anejo, so the Patron Anejo was a richer, more complex tequila, but that was to be expected given its longer ageing. I enjoyed them both but the Patron was a more complex and more characterful style, it was the more interesting product to drink. However, in terms of value for money, I thought the Teremana was a well-balanced, flavorsome, cleanly-made Tequila which is nearly half the price of the Patron.
