Wine Review: Quinta do Vesuvio Pombal do Vesuvio 2017

In today's tasting Master of Wine David Allen, Wine-Searcher's Wine Director tastes a Douro table wine from on of the Douro Valley's leading quintas, Quinta do Vesuvio. The wine - Quinta do Vesuvio Pombal do Vesuvio 2017 - appears to represent some great value for money.
Quinta do Vesuvio is a Portuguese wine estate high in the rugged, arid upper Douro, producing a range of table wines and Ports. It is owned by the Symington group of wineries alongside the likes of Graham's, Warre's and Dow's.
There are 133 hectares (329 acres) of vines at the quinta, that range from 425ft (130m) above sea level at the river's edge to 1740ft (530m) at the top of the ridge. Being so far inland, the diurnal temperature variation is extreme, which means the grapes retain acidity as they ripen.
In the winery, grape treading by foot still takes place, a traditional which dates back to the estate's foundation in the early 19th Century. It takes approximately 50 people at least two hours to tread one lagar (a traditional granite, open vat used for grape fermentation).
The Vesuvio wine range includes Douro DOC wines as well as Port produced from Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Amarela. The Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage is the standard Port offering, while Capela do Vesuvio is only released in tiny quantities in exceptional years.
