SHORT HAND FOR YOU ALL: Copy paste in the search bar of Registry Editor: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer, within it click "new" name it exactly " Shell Icons" , within THAT, click "new string" , name it "29" then edit it, copy and paste this: %windir%\System32\shell32.dll,-50 (or -51 depending on YOUR PC) reset PC... if still there or black boxes, click and open the "29" and delete the whole 'value' "%windir%\System32\shell32.dll,-50" leaving the folder 29 BLANK... reset PC again, that should fix it all... if THAT fails.... sorry

everyone who has black boxes. to get back first delete value data, restart the explorer and then you can finally delete file 29 and retart the explorer again. works everytime

Hey, i need help, it worked 1st time and after i turn on pc next day my apps were all black, can u help me about it? i tried to remove shell icons and again to put it in same shit they got black again

This totally just worked for me on my Windows 11 Lenovo laptop I have been wanting to tinker with the icons and stuff so removing the arrow on the icons has been my first thing I wanted to do. Now time to get my theme and icons picked out and setup. I wish everyone luck with there tinkering as well.

After restarting the laptop and starting it up today the icons with the shortcut arrows are now with a black square on them.

So what i did is, I deleted the whole VALUE DATA that we pasted inside "folder29" and miracle happened is the shortcut arrow neither returned back nor it turned black squares ever, even without having that script which need to pasted inside folder 29 If it causing squares again, you do the same

At first it worked for me, but now all my icons are just black boxes. Removing the "shell icons" folder from the Registry fixes the issue and returns all my icons back to normal with the shortcut arrows. What could be the problem?

When I ended the task manager I started getting Paper icons fro the desktop apps on my computer. My shortcut apps got deleted but how can i remove the paper icons.

they all tured all black what should I do ?

Works for me only until I restart my computer. After that, all icons are black and it won't change back (I tried to restart the PC and also only the Windows explorer with the task manager). I have to delete the registry entry to bring the icons back.

​@@jeremymonigold9554 Hi, look for the solution mentioned just a few lines below my post. manuux said that you only have to change the entry from ...tem32\shell32.dll,-50 to ...tem32\shell32.dll,50. Idk if this works, because I found another solution that works 100% fine for me. It uses a transparent overlay icon.

@@lemniscatic1291 Yeah they changed things in Win 11, I used to use the blank ICO trick (sticking it in C:\Windows directory) with a reg hack, that corrupts Win 11 but easily fixable, seems so far there is no current way to properly remove it
