The last windows 10 build (LTSC, dunno about regular SKUs (too lazy) is only 3 years old. More compatibility and less resource hungry (especially memory). So while yes windows 10 is old in terms of the 2015 build which is irrelevant, 21h2 IS more modern as as previously stated "3 years old.(4ish give or take tbh)" I've tested most versions of windows 10 on the 13th gen intel CPUs, ran benchmarks and experimented with (intel and any pc manufacturers will tell you win10 won't work properly on a newer platform intended for 11, which is a lie, theres certain cases obviously) but between gaming, cpu benchmarking/combined benching, maybe a 7fps difference in games, only 257 points lower on 10 21h2/regular pro version as well compared to 11 23h2 (which in theory was supposed to improve performance, haha another M$ joke) makes barely any difference to performance whatsoever, apparently 10 can't handle E-cores and P-cores? Well I'm here to say that's even more bullshit, because using SDIO to install intel drivers makes it work perfectly. Might make a video explaing the process, but I firmly believe windows 10 (any build) isn't going anywhere any time soon, it's basically the modern equivalent to the win7 love but far superior. It's not about going back in time it's about using something that's reliable and works when you push a button. Yup I'm done lol (dunno what works on the new 14th gen but we shall see)

I’ve run 11 on an unsupported pc since it launched. And I have of course been through each and every setting I could find about privacy and telemetry. Going into apps and removing all the extra that I don’t need or want was also important. And I must admit…. It has not been a bad experience. But it does make it easier if you know about setting up computers, and see a lot of the bloatware as simply being present in case you want it, to be removed if you don’t. Dappled a bit with Linux as an alternative to Windows 11. Nah. Not for me. The mess behind the UI is evident. A simple thing as the folder hierarki is oddly messy and suggests an OS build of ever increasing bits slapped onto the initial core.

@@TraitorFelon.14.3 The issue is installing win 10 on new laptops with 11 gen and up processor and NVME ssd. As for Linux, use Zorin. It feels like Windows and support many things of Windows. Installation is easy and support old and new computers. Something else. There's ReactOS which is an open source that has the same language of Windows so there's no compatibility issues with Windows third party programs. However, it is an old Operating System so new software might not work and it looks like it is 32bit only. Why no one have made it better or wrote another OS that have the same Windows environment language so people could still use same programs and give a middle f1nger to Windows?

Linux being Open Source and existing in many distros…. How do you know you can trust the one you eventually settle with? @@unnamed715 There are several ways in which they can do it: Slip in an update with the regular updates they are still providing before Windows 10 goes end of life next year. Slip in an update on the last day of support. Also, Microsoft has been known to release updates to end of life versions of Windows if a super critical bug comes out within days of if it going end of life. That too is an opportunity to "fix the oversight" as it were. They can also do something to the updates that 0patch has access to in order to prevent 3rd parties like them from distributing patches. I wouldn't put anything past Microsoft, but the TL:DR is they have more than a few options available to them.

It's not like they're just going to turn off the update servers and throw them in the trash when 10 goes end of support.

If Windows 11 wasn't such a turd, there would be no need for patching Windows 10. Windows 11 is getting more and more intrusive and is spying on users. The kicker for me was when I was forced to update to the latest "quality" update for my system to keep security support. The update took 3 HOURS, and then when I logged in, it did that BS "wait a minute" for every user I had created. This finally convinced me to jump out of the airplane and set my parachute on fire. I am now using Kubuntu and do not regret my decision. I install security patches daily, and they take no time at all, and they do not impact my work while they are going. I signed up for Ubuntu One, which gives me support for my LTS version for 5 more years after the original version is superseded. I control when I update the OS to the next version. And so far, each version still runs on my old PC with the same performance.

Can't count the number of times I've tried out Linux, and each time I try it I like it- for a couple of weeks. Then inevitably I find some difficulty which can only be addressed by going to command line instructions; those are often not intuitive at all (at least to me) so I end up totally frustrated & go back to Windows. If I had a magic wand, I'd go back to the Amiga OS, which was the last one I really liked; it worked the way I wanted my OS to work and let me tailor my computer to fit my needs; but that's not an option. I dislike Windows, but at least I can get it to do what I want most of the time without having to resort to finding obscure commands to download files from some depository, which once installed don't always do what I got them for, leaving me in a dilemma. Which is all my fault of course, so I guess I really just don't want to do all the study to make Linux a success. I'm glad it's working well for you though!

Be careful with Ubuntu. Canonical has been going down the same road as Microsoft over the past 6-7 years. I started seeing these invasive "phone home" type of integrations (ask if you want a list!) in Ubuntu starting around the time Dustin Kirkland began working there (he no longer does, but the damage has been done). Their snap-focus is also extremely silly and unnecessary compared to standard .deb methods of package distribution. Do not trust Canonical's technical expertise; they do not have much of it. It's just "rebranded and tweaked" Debian, with invasive things added to it.

My Windows 10 system was top-of-the-line when I built it in 2012, and it still works perfectly. There's nothing I want to do that it won't do. I'm very familiar with, and used to, Win 10 and see no reason to "up" grade; in fact I find Win 11 a pain-in-the-rear in far too many ways, and I really hate that its telemetry tells M$ everything I do. That is unacceptable. I drive an old car, same year as my Win 10 computer; it will go well over the speed limit, it's comfortable, in perfect condition, everything works, and I like it. I'm not getting a new car because they also have telemetry which tracks wherever I go, the speed I travel at, how fast I take turns, etc. Besides, virtually all new cars are butt-ugly. I guess I just like keeping what already works just fine and see no reason to exchange it for something "newer" just because it's newer, which might not work nearly as well!

Exactly how I feel! I do not want an electric, computerized car. I love the wee hatchback I have now. Apart from the usual wear & tear she has never really let me down. Same goes for my pc's. I loved my Windows XP best of all but had to give in to 'progress' and move on, like it or not. Got used to Win 7, quite liked it so used it for as long as possible until I was forced to 'upgrade' to Win 10 (May 2020). Cost me over a grand for a half-decent custom build of my choice (I'm learning about this tech stuff. No more over the counter pc's for me!). Had it for only 4 years and now I'm having to seriously consider 'upgrading' yet again!! I don't want W11 or 12. I don't want to 'upgrade' either, or not yet anyway. I want to do it when I'm ready. Anyway, Windows notifications inform me that my current pc is not ready (or able) to move to W11. So what do I do? There's not really a lot to choose from is there? Regarding my over-the-counter W7 Packard Bell desktop, purchased in 2010 (just checked the receipt and was shocked by the date, lol). It's still in use and has working security apps. I don't use it for much but it has some programs that I like to use. In all, it is still in working order. Newest or latest' model does not always mean best. To me it means 'they' have come up with new & improved methods to profit, spy & control! User experience improvements are secondary.

I run a rolling release (OpenSUSE Tumbleweed) and in theory just install it once and do periodic updates and never have to reinstall it again. It's always up to date. Never truly expires. I've had fantastic luck with the stability, because sometimes rolling release distros can be a bit unstable due to their bleeding edge nature. I've been running Linux for several years now and would never consider going back to MS. It's just too bloated and they don't give a damn about the user's privacy. @@MissIdolize What I would recommend is this: If you have software that absolutely MUST run on Windows, install Windows 10 in a virtual machine. (One that's not connected to the Internet for when Win10 eventually is no longer supported.) You'll still be able to use your photo editing software, but because the VM won't be online you won't have to worry about viruses and malware. Anything you need to do online, do it with Linux. The only possible problem I could see would be if the photo editing software you purchased requires an active internet connection. If that's the case, then you may have a problem. But if not, you could run it entirely in Win10 in a VM and if/when the program needs updating, download the update with Linux then share that file with the VM. That sounds a lot more complicated than it really is. It's not that bad. 🙂

I hope this will be available in the U.S. For many of us with computers only 10 years old or so that were "higher end screamers" when bought, keeping them going another few years is great. I can't use Linux because I need iTunes and other software that is Windows only. Keeping the older PC going a while longer before having to buy means the PC that I do buy say in 2027 will be that much better. There is a good chance that Linux distros will support 64 bit computers well into the 2030's. Linux programmers supported 32 bit computers up to 2018, 32 bit computers hadn't been manufactured in ten years at that point.

Since I bought my Dell XPS 8960 Windows 11 23H2 computer on February 21st, 2024, and then "upgraded" it to Windows 10, this extended life would be good for me.

You can always spend a heap of time (plus the money) on stripping all the bloatware, spyware and telemetry out of Windows then have to do it again the first time you update, or you could install an OS that does what you want it to (and nothing more) saving all that hassle (and money) and find that your hardware delivers even better performance than you were expecting. I built a system in 2013 - Intel i5 3470, 16GB RAM, 128GB SSD, 2x2TB HDD, nVidia GeForce 210 - and put a Debian system on it. Since then I've had to replace an HDD twice but as I have them set up as a mirrored pair, I barely noticed and lost no data. I also replaced the graphics card a couple of years ago but I'm still using this system now. It's been upgraded from Debian 7 all the way through to Debian 12.6 (as of today.) It's just as snappy as the day I built it. I run VMs on it - even a Win11 VM for testing - as well as normal internet stuff, kernel and other software compilation and, while my compile times are nothing to write home about, it does what I need it to do without complaining. That's more than I can say for a Windows system.

I think the issue is not how old a computer is. The actual reason I think is that W10 has now matured fully with little to no bugs in it. W11 on the other hand has a lot of bugs. W11 has been crafted to what Microsoft thinks is perfect, but at the end user, it does not suite one's comfort and there are some codes that cannot be broken or customized. I don't know, maybe I am exacerbating, I don't know.

I say this because as soon as I open task manager to see what's going on it instantly stops. The worst offender is windows security (there's an oxymoron) which was too slow in shutting itself down. The other is some compatibility prog running, this happens even in power saver mode (another oxymoron). Seriously considering removing windows security if this keeps up.

If that's true, then it's probably better to just stick with Microsoft for updates, because it costs about the same amount of money. If we're really lucky, Microsoft will actually listen to all the back-lash and either fix Windows 11 or bring out Windows 12 (or 13, depending on the rumours), so long as any later version of Windows is better. Personally, I think they should just release an updated version of Windows XP. That was by far the most user-friendly and bloatware-free version of Windows.

The pricing you’ve seen from MS only applies to business/enterprise customers, and that fee is per computer (seat). It doubles in year 2, then doubles again in year 3. The consumer pricing is unknown, but will follow the same pattern. So, let’s say that for the average consumer, MS decides to charge $55 for the first year. That becomes $110 in year 2, and then $220 in year 3. That makes it $385 in total. It is worth it? You’ll have to decide. You’ll still be faced with replacing your hardware after that, or try to make the move to Linux. Just like where you are now, but you’ll be $385 poorer. “Of course that’s just my opinion. I could be wrong.” - Dennis Miller

I do need to get of of my (expletive) and buy a newer desktop running Windows 11, though (I already have a laptop running Windows 11). I buy off lease desktops and there are some coming into the system that run Windows 11.

You won't be paying $30 a year. You'll pay (if you're lucky) $30 the first year, $60 the 2nd year, then $120 the third year. That's how it will work.

You are not very accurate about Linux. There are versions that perform VERY WELL on old hardware. I have a 2011 system at home with a Centrino SINGLE CORE processor and 4 GB of RAM. I am running Zoren OS Lite on it. It does great. It isn't as fast as my Laptop with an Intel core i7 w 16 GB of RAM, but it is entirely usable. Zoren OS is based on Ubuntu, but the Lite version uses a very low demand Graphical User Interface, so old Hardware can run it well.

If I might suggest, lots of free and open source software is cross-platform, so you can run it on Windows and Linux. Try switching some of your work flows to free software while you remain on Windows so you can 1) decide which software you'd like to use, and 2) get used to it. Then when you want to switch to Linux, back up your data, buy a new SSD, pull the old HDD/SSD with your Windows install out replacing it with the new SSD, load Linux Mint on that and restore your data. You still have the old disk untouched so, if you need something from it, you can just plug it in or use an external USB connector, and grab what you need. This is how I did it for my 67 year old brother. He's loving Linux Mint because it has all the software he needs set up as he likes it, all his old data is where he expects it and the machine is much, much more responsive than it was before.

@@dingokidneys I've already done that. LibreOffice, Audacity, etc. I switched to open source and cross-platform basically everything after microsoft started with the office 365 subscription BS. I'm literally at the point I only need to swap my OS at this point, and I'm already running testbed computers on Mint. I'm mainly still using Win10 mostly for convenience, and I have some hardware upgrades planned to coincide with the OS swap. For a home user that only surfs the web, checks email, watches youtube, there is very little difficulty swapping to linux. I wish the industry would push that notion harder. Sounds like you've got the situation well in hand, and in much the same manner that I'm thinking of going. Glad your brother's experience is going the way I'm expecting mine to go. :)

I don’t know about this solution and I’ve never heard of these people. Anyway, screw Microsoft their phony security updates they Don’t work anyway. My computer still got hacked on a regular basis until I created a pretty vigorous and robust network security infrastructure. I’m still using Microsoft Office 2007. I will not pay for office 365. As a Matter of fact, I will not pay for any Microsoft products anymore. Just before windows 10 came out I bought a copy of Windows 7. That was the first time that I paid for a copy of Windows since Windows 98 SE. They came out with windows 10 so fast I never got a chance to use it and it has been sitting in my desk drawer for about 10 years. I have been getting into virtual machines and I wanted to see what windows 7 was like in today’s day and age. Well, the installer froze and I have not been able to install it. That is $120 down the toilet. That’s about $160 in today’s money. I’ve been using Linux for 17 years and have been looking for an excuse to ditch windows once and for all, this is the excuse.

Windows XP had over 13 years supports and Windows 7 had over 11 years. Yet Windows 10 gets just over 10 years, yet more users want windows 10 and not windows 11. People are only using it as they are being forced to use it, as it shipped with new PC's. I think WINE and proton has come along way now that nearly most of my software run better on Linux than on Windows as most decent Linux distros has better reliability. No big need to know which telemetry registry settings to disable or tweak and other settings in windows under network or admin groups policy settings. You have a small learning curve on an OS like Zorin 17.1 which is made in the UK and is setup to be able to run most windows programs as is, but with some small additions like only installing deb applications as a majority with protonup and proton GE with steam get latest AMD and nVidia drivers. Been playing Guild Wars legacy complete MMORP and GW2, No mans sky, Halo master chief collection straight up out of the box no tweaking. I do not see the fuss with Linux now a days.
