Winding - Hwigeom Hyangjeokse [Jedok Geom Techniques]

Спорт

Today I show a technique from the Korean sword manual Jedok Geom in Muyedobotongji. This is the technique called Hwigeom Hyangjeokse which translates to swinging the sword at the enemy. It is a technique to wind onto the inside line of the opponent's blade to cut them.
Hwigeom Hyangjeokse involves throwing a rising cut (usually from the left low guard to the right, here I happened to start in right low guard so had to do an odd rising cut to the right) to displace their sword, then turn the sword on their blade to take the inside line and step through and cut them down. There are a few more nuances which make this work, but once you've got them down its a great move to have in your arsenal.
Always be aware of your surroundings and minimise harm to yourself, others and your environment. Never use weapons when intoxicated or upset or for any act of violence.

The slow motion reply really helped to see what happened

So this seems to look similar in some ways to the HJMA technique of suriage, which is a form of parry from below using the spine of the blade (can be done as a simply offset or wrap around their blade to put yours on the inside) to then immediately cut afterwards.

Yes, it's similar. With the longer blade its less of a beat/wrap bit more of a displacement. But beating does work, just a more committed movement
