Wim Wenders Movie Review: "Alice In The Cities" (1974)

Review and deep appreciation for "Alice In The Cities", the 1974 masterpiece directed by Wim Wenders, starring the great Rüdiger Vogler and the marvelous Yella Rottlӓnder, along with Lisa Kreuzer and Edda Küchl. This is the first of Wim Wenders' "Road Trilogy" (followed by "Wrong Move" and "Kings Of The Road"). Superb cinematography by Robby Müller and editing by Peter Przygodda, with music by Can. Loosely inspired by Peter Handke's novel "Short Letter, Long Farewell" and Chuck Berry's song "Memphis, Tennessee".

“Alice in den Stadten” is one of my favorite movies, alongside with “Wings of Desire” and Wim Wenders is my favorite film director. I’m so thankful you made this vast, well organized review. I really liked you told about the history of movie creation, it’s key points, some movie details and shared your personal feelings. I also find that music resonates so well with the authentic movie mood and made it so soothing and a bit sad. I liked that stunning Can’s soundtrack so much. You found it had some teraputical effect, that is true, it wakens up only good feelings in it's spectator. And your saying “If you have a soul, you will love that movie” was so good. I agree and also think if you have open mind and heart, you will definitely like it. I really appreciate you made this recording, wish you all well.

Thank you for your kind comment, Aleksey. I am happy to meet another Wenders fan. As I get older and time passes, it seems that “Alice” becomes more and more my favorite Wenders movie out of so many great movies of his. I really should continue my Wenders movie commentaries, and kind comments like yours encourage me to do so, so thank you again. Cheers! Jeff

This is so funny. Just today, before I saw your review, I was thinking about Wim Wender movies and found myself thinking, "Alice in the Cities is his best film. Paris, Texas is beautiful and perhaps more mature, but Alice in its starkness and purity is more moving by far." Perhaps it has to do with that European tenderness of Wender's fellow Germans Vogler and Rottlander. Perhaps it's the simplicity and improvisational, spontaneous quality of the filmmaking, the old grittiness of the black and white film stock that so vividly triggers memories of the 1970's. Wenders, in his documentary Reverse Angle, quotes the french painter Cezanne: ''Everything is about to disappear. You've got to hurry up, if you still want to see things.'' Wenders sees things with this kind of urgency. Thanks for your superb and reassuring review!

Thank you very much for your comments. I really appreciate them. Yes, Alice In The Cities is not only my favorite Wenders film, but it is also one of my favorite films overall. I've lost count of how many times I've watched this movie. So moving and pure, indeed. Thanks again. Jeff

Hello Jeff...I’m not acquainted with Wim Wenders movies...except Paris Texas..which I watched twice back in the mid eighties...It prompted us to buy the soundtrack to the movie.. We overplayed that record!! ...a bit distracted cause I’m listening to two albums back to back... so I need to pay attention to the music...👂

Wim Wenders is not for everyone, Harry. I know of few people who know his movies and like them (except for a few big hits like Paris Texas and Wings Of Desire). But for those of us who like him, he is quite special indeed. And YES he ALWAYS has great music in his movies!!

I would have to say it’s a toss between Paris Texas or kings of the road for my favorite Wenders movie but Alice in the cities is right up there

Paris Texas was my first introduction to Wenders and I knew instantly that it was very special. Then I rented Wrong Move and loved it. Then Kings Of The Road and Alice In The Cities. Then Wings Of Desire. And Until The End Of The World. And on and on. I remember sitting in a theater watching Million Dollar Hotel when it first came out....there were five people in the theater.....by the time the movie was half over, I was the only one left in the theater! Haha. I loved it, whereas they hated it...... That is Wim Wenders in a nutshell. Those who love his films really love them, and those who don't, really don't. ;-)

I've seen Alice In The Cities more times than any other Wenders film. Definitely my favorite. But I love all of them....well, except for the ones even he doesn't like (Hammett, ScarletLetter). Thanks for your comment, Hayden! I was thinking about subscribing to the Criterion Channel too. Cheers. Jeff

I would probably say the closest American cinema had to Wim Wenders is the criminally underrated Nicholas Ray

I've never seen many of Ray's films, but I know Wim was a big fan, so I really should check out his work. Thanks for the reminder, Hayden. Cheers. Jeff
