Wilson Combat 460 Rowland 230 gr and 200 gr Ammo Test

Ойын-сауық

I review Wilson Combat 200 gr and 230 gr 460 Rowland ammunition loaded with XTP bullets. How does this ammunition stack up against other 460 Rowland ammunition and is it reliable? I'm not sure what Wilson Combat is doing, other than killing kittens, and telling people not to run weapons mounted lights, but this round has some issues both with reliability and performance. It would still be more than adequate for bear defense if it were reliable. This is done out of my FNX 45 Tactical.

Recoil doesn't look too bad. Man, that is a beautiful weapon. Im a 10 mil guy, but, only because that's what I carried as a duty weapon, fell in love with the round, and most of all, I cant afford many more calibers 😂. Seeing how the 10mm performed on "bad people" by attending a few Trooper involved shooting autopsies sealed the deal. Talk about carnage.

@@Hammerback972 that’s so good to hear. There is another guy in these chats who also carried 10mm for his LEO career. Real experience doesn’t lie. For sure 10mm is awesome for so many reasons: ammo availability, regular sized guns, gun selection, gun availability, reliability by multiple vendors, on and on. This is just another option I’m playing with. Thanks for watching!!

In a 5" 1911, you can reload the 230 grain XTP to 1330 fps quite easily and the 200 grain XTP bullets can be loaded to over 1400 fps.

Absolutely. So long as the barrel can take the elevated pressures, it’s capable of it. Normal 45 acp is only around 20 k psi and barrels are rated for 40kpsi. These loads and the ones you are talking about are approaching that psi level so it’s possible it’s just right on the margin. Hence the Rowland barrel to just add more safety to it. The Rowland case is just 45 acp, just made longer so people don’t try to run it in old 1911’s that can’t handle the pressures but the 45acp case can handle this for sure.

Keep ‘em coming. Finally got a G30 on the way. I’ll shoot it for a bit, then my plan is to get the conversion kit. I’m hoping for a compact package that edges a full size 10mm. Why, I dunno, but I like the hand loading flexibility. I hope the wind doesn’t blow me low and left from the Rowland conversion, and towards something else, lol.

Wind, yeah, it was the wind. Nice shooting there Trigger Bar. Very glad you stopped the rap song before getting carried away, lol. In all seriousness, 460 has been around for a while and still seems to be something that needs to be tinkered with, whereas 10mm seems to be well sorted out and pretty straightforeward, a plug and play where you buy the gun, buy the ammo and enjoy without needing to guess at the spring weights and ammo ogive shapes and all that. Regardless, thanks for the video and I hope you and yours enjoy a great 4th!

It's sort of dawned on me after some time, that there's a giant hole in media content about firearms. That hole is hunting with a handgun, and doing it well. Everything is influenced by games and movies and competition and just about 99% of that stuff is black guns and 9mm and they all sound like a machine gun operating. Younger people going to gun shops are buying AR's and Glocks, not much interested in anything else. Even industry doesn't cater to handgun hunters by way of equipment. Try to find a extended eye relief handgun scope, very functional supports or portable stands for handguns. The munitions companies are basically focusing on 5.56 and 9mm and that's about it. All the great, capable cartridges with good reach are expensive and much less available (.41 mag, .44 mag, .45 Colt +p, .454 Casull, etc), and the revolvers that can handle hunting duty are over $1 grand further keeping the younger generation out. The .460 Rowland would be an excellent hunting cartridge, even the 45acp+p is more capable than people think.

  • @triggerbarPhD

I would love to personally get more into hand gun hunting. 460 Rowland would be great. Unfortunately my backwards state only allows revolvers for hunting. So likely my 44 mag is the way to go there. But I agree, most states only have short distance hunting (100 yards and in) due to trees and populations). Hand gun cartridges are perfect for that.

  • @exothermal.sprocket

@@triggerbarPhD .357mag is much more capable up to 100 yards than people think as well. No one blinks at a .35 caliber rifle. The 158gr .357mag Buffalo Bore from a lever action registers more power than a 150gr .30-30 muzzle. There's also loads from Grizzly up to 200gr for .357 which is the equivalent sectional density to a 290gr .44 mag. No lack of penetration up to 100yd. But the big hitters like 454 Casull can easily handle another 100 yard if the shooter can aim it. For hunting, fast followup shots isn't necessary. Single action or double action revolver would be just fine. BFR, Freedom Arms, Ruger. Taurus, S&W, Colt, Rossi.

Good points made in that comment. My favorite handgun is a glock 40 MOS topped with a trijicon RMR, timney alpha glock trigger, few other odds and ends, but it shoots great at distance. A friend of mine who isnt great with a pistol had no problem putting rounds in a paper plate at 65 yards. I think the red dot helped him out

Awesome video to see! Seen Wilson Combat 460 Rowland ammo and seen the ballistics on them. Was thinking they're loaded like 45 Super-45 Super +P which is still good. Was thinking if the velocity indicates these would be easier to shoot, less recoil, than hotter loads. Worry over bullet casing not having a crimp. Maybe better to see if they shoot better out of either glocks or 1911s converted to shoot it. Wilson Combat either needs to sponsor or record a video test themselves of their ammo going through ammo dumps. It would be nice to see Underwood & BB and the 460 Rowland's website ammo themselves go through ammo dumps to see their reliability. People would use these for bears after all.

exactly. I don't know what is up with this round. Not sure if they seated too far or no crimp but it was causing hangups. I didn't show it but I shot 3 other ammo types to make sure something hadn't gone wrong with my gun before I noticed that lip. They all ran fine. Then I noticed the lip and showed that. Yah and 45 super is great, nothing wrong with that and the bullet performs great at these velocities. But can't have ammo that doesn't feed reliably, and it just looks off.

I wonder if Wilson will make something for this in their Xtreme Chaos line. That bullet looks like a champ! It's like the Controlled Chaos, but the base expands some, after shedding the 4 petals (gaping damage), and doesn't over-penetrate. XTP looks to fly apart at those 1300 fps+ velocities...as much as I might like that for defense...most people don't and want that weight retained to penetrate like your 230 gr shot did. Good test. Maybe this is the same concept of 10mm loaded at .40 sw power? Why take it up 200 fps if you don't get any benefit, and is easier to shoot? Good to have options, but we're all here to see 1000 fps!!!!
