"workhorses" that is exactly what I am missing today, when every 4x4 is supposed to be just an overpriced, somehow more "capable" SUV... intended to be used to "have fun" and not primarily "to work". I would really welcome a true workhorse, without unnecessary gadgets and "luxury"!! (today the only option is to restore an old vehicle or refit a military vehicle)

Europe and England have created almost all the motoring icons and the genres from which they spring, but America is the birthplace of the most renowned offroader. As with the contemporary Land Rover Defender, if some boutique manufacturer made these classically simple CJ17s from scratch again, I'm not sure they wouldn't have enough of a retail base to make a good profit.

My parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles, that were born in the depression, that's the late 20s depression, and before, always pronounced it will-iss. This long ad kinda confirmed it. Willys himself pronounced it Willis. The soldiers also called their rifle Ga-Rand even though he pronounced his name Gerend. Just because it’s a common misconception doesn’t make it any less of a misconception. People get way to bent around the axles on stuff like this people don’t even pronounce everything the same way today. I think the Willys company actually started changing the pronunciation themselves after the war to capitalize on the misconception. Before the war they made cars of a similar quality to mercury. After the war they were torn between returning to making entry level luxury cars (they did briefly with the Aero) or to try to capitalize on their war reputation with recreational and utility vehicles. That side obviously won out and the Willeez pronunciation fits better with that kind of marketing as many soldiers recognized it and it is more fun to say so fits better with the youthful recreation marketing. But that’s all just my guess.
