Willys Jeeps on NDT and AG Tires

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is some experimenting I have done where I compare STA 7.50-16 NDT tires to Deestone 7.50-16 AG tires on 4 different surfaces. 1. Illinois muddy ditch, Moab Slick Rock, Southern Missouri Rock, County Roads. I did my best to give each tire a fair opportunity in an Apples to Apples comparison or very close comparison. Thanks to Alan Koller for helping. As said in the video, Alan’s Jeep “Thumper” is a very similar build to BAM BAM and we are equal in driving styles and experience. I welcome constructive comments, and invite comments from others who have their own personal experience with “skinny tires”. Thanks to Alan Koller, Jesse Coombs, and Nick Oxender for some of the footage.

Now you know why I could never climb “Slippery when wet” with my narrow Super Swampers 😁 I think you’ve confirmed what we (maybe just me?) have instinctively known: Ag tires and narrow Super Swampers are the cat’s meow for mud and muck, but not so good on the rocks. But dang, those ag tires (and super Swampers) just look cool 😎👍🏻

Different treads for different terrain. As to the "tractor" tires, just ask a tractor driver. If they are on the "normal" way, they are designed to offer max traction on dirt/mud as you would find in a field, if they start to bog down or dig in too much, put tractor in reverse and it will lift itself up and out - one way digs in, other way fills in as you suspected. Thanks Jeff.

Very good points, and great observation about what I call "lug flex" or tread squirm. Having run many, many off road tires over the years, I have come to appreciate how a radials steel belted tread holds the lugs more stable and "hooks up" better on rock. ( Though, as you well know, stiff load range E rated truck radials don't hook as well as your lightweight NDT's)! I am really curious how the new generation radial AG tires would do. BKT makes a 210/95 r 16 radial that looks just like these Deestones, but radial ! Dying to try them.

Tu lo has dicho. Esos cauchos que pusiste son para pantano y destruyen la vía. Lo mejor son los originales y con cortes o zigzag en el centro. Dios le guarde y le bendiga grandemente.

Hello Jeff have you tried agg tires in the snow? Just wondering looks like they might work there 🙈

tubless tyres have a butyl liner on the inside to stop air leaking through the rubber, tube tyres don't so they keep going down as if they have a slow leak.

Do you have the Yokohama G005 XMT in 7.50R16 over there? We have them in Australia but they’re quite rare.

I wonder if you ran the ag tires backwards just on the front or rear and see if that might help. Some farmers do this on 4wd tractors, just thought.

Possibly. I’m not sure that it would matter that much on rocks though. The tread is tall and flexible. And not much tire surface. If you look at the pictures in the beginning, you can see that there is not as much rubber on surface. If the tread lug was shorter it might grab edges better but then would not dig as well in mud.

I think they run the front tires in reverse so that they have traction when backing up.

That's true. I guess you just have to use the ag tire for the mud mainly.

@@jpetrowich mostly you run the tires backwards for better tire wear on highway if its not a 4wd they are backwards to help rotate easier in mud .

  • @rowdyjackson6654

That is the ratio of the input gear to the output gear, basically how many times the driveshaft spins to make the wheels spin one full rotation. It's useful in calculations for determining max speed, crawl ratio and torque at the wheel. The 4.88 is going to be better for speed but the 5.38 is going to help give you the torquey crawl that you want offroad.

They usually reverse the front axle.

Usually done if you're using a front loader on a tractor so you can pull out of a pile of mud/muck or what ever your loading when you've got a bucket full more weight on the front axle when loaded

Nice comparison. Now I wonder how these both compare with the super traction bias ply tires of the same size. I think these would rate in between due to them being a "mud tire".

I have never wheeled Super Traxions but I have wheeled plenty with guys who run them. Other than on the street, I’m not impressed. I’d challenge them any day with NDTs. … off-road that is.
