Grampa's Jeep on Double Sammy during Winter 4x4 Jamboree 2021

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

At the Winter 4x4 Jamboree, Grampa's Jeep the 1948 Willys CJ2A takes on the Double Sammy Trail. Trail leaders were Kevin and Katlynn Boren in their Jeep XJ. In this video we return to the location where last year our spindle bolts pulled out and the front wheel fell off. See that story here, • Double Sammy Blues

"Built better" depends on perspective. Those Willy's were built to be light and durable for the little horsepower they had, and nothing more. Modern rigs can cruise the freeway at 70+MPH with the A/C on and complying with current emissions and crash safety standards. That said, I much prefer the Willy's.

Yeah i think for 40,000 plus I'd rather build up a willys or some cj. The simplicity of it, is its reliability. And one thing about these jeeps is you don't need to be sky high to have decent clearance. Lockers would deff help these grand daddy jeeps though. 😆 not the smoothest of ride either , I crawl everywhere here in hawaii

I learned to drive in an old Willys jeep like that, I think it was a ‘49. I remember my skinny nine year old leg shaking trying to hold the clutch in. Everything about that little tank was cramped and stiff, the leg room, the steering, the suspension, the transmission and clutch all took everything I had to operate them. But it was awesome anyway. It never got stuck and it was tougher than old boot leather.

Hi Douglas, I’m not super familiar with how a 3b is equipped as far as axles go. I believe it has the Dana 25 front axle and the Dana 44 rear, both with 10 plane axle shafts. If that is the case then you are very limited as to what lockers you can use. As far as I know the only 10 saline lockers available are the Lock Right automatic (lunchbox) lockers. There are some Power Lok limited slip units around, but they are harder to find and fir me don’t work as well as the Lock Rights. Other guys think the Power Loks are great, but I don’t. I am running Lock Rights in both my axles.

I am a fan of open diffs. If rock crawling is all your Willys does then lockers are not a bad idea. If your Willys is more of a utility vehicle then open diffs are by far better. Lockers limit your turning radius and tear up your lawn. A locker does increase the strength of the carrier which is the weakest point of a Dana 25 but the best thing about open diffs is the excuse of why you didn’t make it up the hill. I believe that open diffs have magical properties once you understand them. All that aside the whole point is that running these trails in the Willys is fun no matter how it is equipped. I do miss the rear locker because spinning donuts in the snow is so much fun. Even though your Jeep might not be modified for crawling doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy crawling.

We were probably following too close when the trail leader stopped at the top of the dune to make sure it was safe, We had to stop just short of the too and once we tried to move on that sand from a stop, we sank like a rock in a pond. This was the softest I have ever seen the sand at Sand Hollow. There has not been much rain for many weeks there and when that blow sand dries out it’s like baby powder. That having been said, I think we would have made it if we hadn’t stopped on the slope. Thanks for watching.
