Willys Jeep Crankshafts......Everything You NEED To Know

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I am taking an extensive look at Willys Jeep Crankshafts. From the first Willys MB/Ford GPW to the CJ2A and on thru the CJ3A, CJ3B, CJ5, CJ6 and later Jeep vehicles.
Cast in counterweights, bolted on counterweights, how much to the crankshafts differ in weight, everything you need to know to make an informed decision about which crankshaft you want to use in your project.
I have many already ground on the Storm Vulcan 15A crankshaft grinding machine and more ready to go. The CJ8 Jeep Scrambler 258 crankshaft is in the machine now and I am going to polish it and see how it comes out. It is in great, original condition and there is no wear on it, just needs a fresh surface to catch and lubricate the journals. I am using the scotch brite type polishing belt and it gets into the radius very well and doesn't aggressively remove material.
A quick look at what a heavier than needed clutch can do to your crankshaft and the actual weight so you can decide what is going in your engine.

    I never gave much thought to cranks, but all the info you shared was really great and useful to know! Never seen an industrial crank before, even in pics. Your videos are great thank you for all you share!

    Lately I have been getting lots of crankshaft questions and had to take some time to get things explained. One person tried and industrial crank in his CJ2A, had to take the engine out almost immediately and change the crank due to massive oil leaks.

    I’d love to grind cranks if someone taught me. I am Currently re building my CJ3A Engine myself. I had it machined at a local shop. Bearings are .20 for both. I do a lot of DIY projects but this has been my absolute favorite! Wish I could work on these engines every day. -Stephen

    Crankshaft grinding is a very detailed process. You have to be all in with crank grinding, it isn't the type of thing you can do one or two a year and get efficient at it. There are plenty of shops out there looking for help, all you have to do is jump in and start at and engine building company.

    Lots of crankshaft abuse out there and I am trying to let people know all I can about crankshaft selection and care. No cold weather here yet, but maybe next week will be chilly. Hope all is well down in Texas

    Great video with great info - thanks a lot! Regarding the 3B71 “new and improved” rear main seals from Best Gaskets - why are they listed as “1946-1964 134 L-Head Willys Jeep 4-Cyl.”? Will they not work on MBs and GPWs?

    check your crank diameter rear seal area. If it is 2.310" it will work with MB and GPW engines. Often times the military engines had smaller diameter seal surface diameter and a rope seal

    The bearings that the crank rides on. Are those replaceable? Do they need to be ground also.

    I have seen some people recut cranks that had screw drives. Couldn't you regrind and weld the rear main seal area of the industrial crank? I suppose people going for extremes would have to buy brand new 258 forged cranks from Hesco. I think some people go to great lengths to weld L-head cranks.

  • @metalshaperJeep

    @metalshaperJeep

    Yes, I weld and grind cranks all the time. The industrial crank is very light so it would be a last choice for most engine applications. Lots of new cranks out there for the later 258 engines and they hold up great.
