Willys hurricane engines 134, 161

Today on what’s it’s like engine episode Friday Willy’s hurricane engine which was based on the 134 go devil flathead and the 161 lightning engines, Willy’s would update both of those engines but instead of going to OHV which is where the industry was going. They decided to go a different route the F head route which is more or less a hybrid of both L-head and Ohv. F-head design puts intake valves in the cylinder head and the exhaust valves are were they would be in a L-head design, the F-head design allowed for larger valves smaller combustion chamber and higher compression

    I have a 1956 CJ5 with the F head four banger right now in my driveway. I used to have a 1954 Willys Aero 4 dr. sedan with the F head six years ago. I wish it was still here.

    There are factories overseas where these engines are still being used to power manufacturing equipment. You can't kill them. 💪

    I have a Lightning 6/3spd &OD that will be going into a '26 Ford Coupe soon. It was in an Aero Ace that the guy was putting a Ford V6 in.

    Grandfather had one in an old Jeep used to plow the fields with. The Jeep was kinda unique. It had a three point hitch and power take off like a tractor .

    WYR: I’d choose the Jeep FC for the first scenario. They’re so unique and not often seen in very good condition nowadays. As for the second scenario, while I love Jeep Wagons, I’d rather have one with the L-head six. I love the little Willys Aero, so that would be my choice.

    Honestly, should’ve done that one first along with the lightning because these engines are based off of those. I will definitely cover those as well as probably the super hurricane which was the continental engine.

    those engines were built by Ford Brazil until 1975. The ford Brazil bought the Willys operations in Brazil and continued to produce the jeep (until 85), the kaiser aero with facelift (until 71) and the 6cyl engine

    Those engines were also used by the 1973 onwaerd Brazilian version version of the Ford Maverick.

    The 161 is quite rare .. They were used in the Willys car, the Kaiser Henry J and the Kaiser Darren ..I had relatives who had them, and they were considered underpowered..The 134 was also used as power units in air compressors and welders into the 1970s...

    @@What.its.like. The 226 also came with stellite valves and seats, it needs no modifications to run on unleaded fuel. It certainly helps to upgrade the carburetion though...

    It's sad that the Willys Aero didn't have the dealer and advertising around it that even Studebaker had at the time. It was a great design, very roomy for its size and actually 5 inches wider inside than the 1953 Studebaker Sedans! Drop a Studebaker V-8 in them and they would had been a sleeper hot rod in the Rambler Rebel guise!

    Wyllis had a complete line up in Brazil ,Brooks Stevens redesigned our Station Wagon ,which was name Rural,redid the Aero too and even a stretch limo of the same .The 161 was enlarged to 183 3.0 L and had dual carbs .In 1976 Ford discontinued it ,replaced by the 2.3 Pinto engine.I rather have the 161 on my 76 Jeep😊

    WYR: Jeep CJ, Kaiser Darrin. Having both of those would make me VERY happy. Many years ago I used a 1965 Jeep at work that had the F head. It was new to me then, fortunately a my dad and a mechanic I knew were able to explain the workings to me. Great coverage as always ~ Chuck

    In the latee '60s, Willys Overland do Brasil made a 184 cid version of the Hurricane 6. The same engine was modified by Ford after they bought Willys do Brasil, and used in early Maverick coupes.

    There are 2 other reasons for using the F head design. First, as well as bigger valves, bigger and better porting is possible. Second, an iron block is a better place than an aluminium or iron head for getting rid of the heat from exhaust valves. Not only is it a bigger mass, but cooled water from the radiator enters the block first and then moves up to the head. Cheers.

    I would take the CJ5. I had a 1964 CJ5 with the Fhead 4 it was very reliable and fun to drive. , and I have had allergies this year also and have never had them before and I'm 72yrs old!!

    I had a 59 CJ-5, was really impressed with the off-road capabilities. With that being said, in WYR I would have a FC model and a Willys wagon.

    Hold on. The Willys Jeepster was only built from 1948-50. The Jeepster didn't make a comeback until 1966. Later it was rebadged the Commando. The 1953 CJ-3B was introduced with it's new high hood to accommodate the Hurricane engine . The early Chevy small block V8's weighed in the 375-400# range. Is there any wonder why so many of us 2-canned the 4-banger and dropped in a small block V8.

    It's really hard to wrap my head around any valve-in-block type engines being offered in cars as later as this one was when pushrod OHV engines had long been 'perfected' and were so much better in numerous ways. An example of the "If it ain't broke don't fix it" concept I guess. One of the tougher WYR's for me. I really like the FC's for their current rarity and oddity, but I'm a sucker for Jeepsters even if they were only 2wd. Round 2 I like the wagons too, and who wouldn't want the iconic Darrin? But the Aero is my winner here because nobody would know what it was.

    Sweet choices when these engine where made OHV wasn’t a new thing but industry was going to ohv.. and the industry also wanted V8 it’s a different engine concept that’s for sure

    I'd go with the CJ & the wagon (Wagoneer?). That Darrin just leaves me wondering what it could have been with a, uh, styling adjustment 😉 Thanks, Jay, for these really interesting vids on details we just don't get elsewhere!

    Rolls Royce used F-head engines into the 50's, but it seems like you get the complexity of overhead valves, with the inefficiency of an L-head. It might be hard to research, but Jeep brought out a new overhead cam 6 cyl for 1962-3, called the Tornado. Car & Driver compared/contrasted it to the jaguar XK engine. Lots of similarities, but it was more truck than car engine. WYR= FC and Kaiser-Darrin. NTT= I think I will go "oh yeah, I knew that" when someone gets it right! Get rid of those nasty allergies, Jay!

    I saw that when researching this topic rolls Royce used F-head Hudson also had a F-head from 1927-1929 Going to cover the continental, which was the super hurricane as well as go devil and lightning eventually As well as the tornado motor Great choices

    IOE engines are the origin of the phrase "outlaw motorcycles"! In the early to mid 30's, they were faster than the newer flatheads that all manufacturers had gone to, so, the AMA was pressured into banning them... They got raced anyway, in "outlawed" by the AMA races, and the rest, as they say, is history.... had nothing to do with clubs, that was a post WW2 thing.... I love this engine... 52 Jeepster weird is cool 54 Kaiser Song, and this is a SWAG, Mony Mony Tommy James and the Shondells

    Cool story. But the term "outlaw" referred to any motorcycle race that wasn't sanctioned by the AMA and was used long before IOE engines were banned from AMA competition.

    Cool episode. We plowed snow during the Blizzard of '78 near Boston with an old ex-military Jeep that had a Hurricane engine. It got slammed into 4+ foot tall snow for days and the only problem we had was sometimes the ignition would get wet and we'd need to dry it out. I'd choose the 1956 Jeep FC and the 1954 Kaiser Darrin. I love the FC.

    WYR 1 55 Jeep 2 ,54 kaiser Darren I know the KaiserDarren had numerous issues but I always liked it because of its oddball quirks like sliding doors. Thanks for another well done interesting informative video.

    Hi Jay! Looking back, it seems that pretty much every company who tried to change L-head engines to some sort of OHV engine had problems with them. Willys seemed to have fewer problems than the others, but still had a few. It would be interesting to talk to an automotive engineer, who could intelligently comment on why L-head engines are less efficient and ask if with today's knowledge of engines, the L head could make a comeback since there are FAR fewer parts than with an OHV or OHC engine. WYR's. . .Number one is going to be the FC! It has roll up windows and a roof! Number two I am going to pick the Aero, was always fascinated with its more modern design for the era. Have suffered from allergies off and on since I was a child, and I feel your pain! Get well, soon!

    WYR: All of them. I went to the Museum of Automobiles on Petit Jean Mountain here in Arkansas, and they have a lot of nice cars. They have a 1923 Climber Model 6-50, and it's one of TWO in existence. You need to make a trip to Arkansas to do a video on that, and other vehicles they have, including John Fitzgerald Kennedy's personal 1963 Lincoln Continental, Elvis Aaron Presley's 1967 Ford Fairlane 500 Ranchero, and Tennessee Ernie Ford's 1955 Dodge Royal Lancer.

    Pop had one of these in his old jeep. When it popped he put a 327 Chevy in it with a home made adapter plate. I was with him when he embarrassed a Corvette stop light to stop light.

    First engine I built in auto shop the only engine the shop teacher revved it up full rev for a few seconds. I would have been first but my fellow comrade sabotage my engine. Put me 2 days behind schedule. I put the marvelous people signed to me in the tool room, they would throw tools over the top of everybody that I needed. The teacher gave me the stoners as my helpers, so I put them in the tool room. Everybody was happy.

It reminds me I wanted to take multicylinder engines in high school and they took me out of that class and put me in algebra I was so mad. I’m still mad to this day, even though that was 17 years ago can’t change the past… We needed three math credits to graduate. I took all the basic math classes and got three math credits, but then they changed the criteria of what you needed to do to get your diploma and algebra was one of the things that you had to have and I was so mad. I felt so stupid I was like 18 in a class with 7th and 8th graders I have dyslexia I hated school I was good at writing but I couldn’t read, at least that’s what the test said I got one of the highest writing grades in the whole school system, but they told me I couldn’t read, and I definitely couldn’t do math…

    I had a 1954 Willys Station Wagon in 4X4 and it had the super hurricane engine. That was really a step dow from the Hurricane six -- a Kaiser flathead six.

    @@allencrider Actually it was a step up in displacement and power.. The torque on that engine is tremendous for its 226 displacement..

    @@What.its.like. I have rebuilt and ran several of those engines and consider them a fairly good engine.. Do not over rev them as they are only a four main bearing engine . Another drawback, is the blocks in some lots tend to crack. I had one where the head was planed, and the compression ratio was such, that it would knock on low test gas . That engine would pull virtually any hill in high, and do 75 mph on the freeway in overdrive. It had considerably more power than the standard 226 ,also it got around 22-24 mpg in a pickup truck. The Warn overdrive made these vehicles quite viable for everyday use . I also ran full synthetic lube in everything, which was a big improvement over what was available when they were new.. Kaiser Fraser did offer some of the 226s supercharged. The 226 also was widely used in welders, air compressor, generators and forklifts. Ahh!! those were the days...

    Great information =) 22 to 24 miles gallon on the highway that’s really good. We were just talking about that new cars with computers and direct injection and they are getting the same gas mileage. It almost seems like a rip off. .. We just purchased a 2011 Honda Odyssey touring van that’s supposed to get 28 miles to the gallon on the highway. I have taken it on a Pennsylvania to Georgia road trip and got nowhere near that the best we got was 23 miles to the gallon with cylinder deactivation… 1959 Rambler cross country claim to get 32 miles to the gallon with a carburetor..

    @@What.its.like. It's a total ripoff .. Gimmicks for gimmicks sake. That mileage was running around the Pa hills .. The old Chrysler 230 flathead was another smooth running, economical engine.. Weak in trucks, but OK in a car...

    There is a Brazilian 184cid version (3.0) of this engine, which had detachable aluminum intake, full filtration oil pump and a 2bbl carb. It was used in the luxury version of the Willys Aero, called Itamaraty. A video with this engine can be found here: kzread.infoC-WPFYZn0Xs

    Unless they had overdrive ng on highway rod bearings rear seal leaks and. A dam head bolt under the carb 😮. The continental kaiser 6 flathead better replacement had about 5 of them over time

    The F-head was the easiest and cheapest way to get more power out of an existing flathead engine. An overhead valve engine would require all new casting and tooling.
