CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Winger (Bill Murray) and Ziskey (Harold Ramis) enlist in the Army.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Bill Murray decides to be all that he can be -- and it ain't pretty -- in this hit comedy. John Winger (Murray) is a quick-witted but unambitious loser who comes home after getting fired to discover that his car has been repossessed and his girlfriend is leaving him. With no idea of what to do next, John and his best friend Russell Ziskey (Harold Ramis) impulsively join the Army, more as a practical joke than a career goal. John and Russell find themselves in basic training under the hard-nosed and impatient Sgt. Hulka (Warren Oates), who is stuck with an outfit of goofballs, including overweight Ox (John Candy), naive Cruiser (John Deihl), perpetually stoned Elmo (Judge Reinhold), and the appropriately-nicknamed Psycho (Conrad Dunn). The platoon succeeds in impressing the generals spite of themselves, and John and Russell even find time to romance two pretty female MPs, Stella (P.J. Soles) and Louise (Sean Young). However, when John and Russell commandeer a high-tech military vehicle for a European weekend getaway with the girls, they happen into Soviet territory and stumble into an international incident. Remarkably, Stripes was made with the full cooperation of the U.S. Army, despite its less-than-rosy view of the all-volunteer armed forces.

He was legendary for going off script and revising and/or ad libbing entire scenes. The Dalai Lama scene was in Caddyshack was completely ad libbed on the fly, as was the Cannonball scene with Chevy Chase. In this movie the Aunt Jemima scene with PJ Soles and the rally speech when they are cramming for graduation feel strongly ad libbed.

How refreshing. Back when comedies had actual jokes.

Yeah I dig it too but cmon man - Egon?!? Hands down the best character he ever wrote IMO
This sucks so much. I didn't even know the guy but I loved him and his movies ever since I was 12. I hoped so bad to get an autograph from him one day. I feel horrible for his family. I remember seeing ghostbusters for the first time and he was my favourite straight away (Murray's awesome also, and Aykroyd. All so funny and talented). Like everyone knows, his movies just had this...thing. I could watch them over and over, and I have. I walked out and saw this on the news and was really shocked. I know everyone dies, it's life. But man, he was so cool. I really liked him and his presence. Really saddened. But watching these clips and reading the comments shows me he was so appreciated. He'll live on in our hearts, forever. R.I.P Mr. Ramis. You are missed.
Sergeant: "Have you ever been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor? That's robbery, rape, car theft, that sort of thing? Murray: "Convicted? No." Ramis: "Never convicted.
You can tell "never convicted" was added as bill glances over with a look of approval
Rest in peace, Harold--we miss you so much!
Bill Murray is hilarious . Hes got the comical acting down to a t. Hes great at making that very innocent face at the camera straight after he's said something so outrageous. Genius .

I usually don't comment most celebrity deaths, but I always enjoyed (perhaps identified with?) Harold Ramis's characters. Great comedian, writer and director. Not many clinkers in his body of work. This may be one of my favorite scenes:
While Bill is signing his name : " Sammy, Get well soon. "😂😂😂

This was in the pre-DADT days. The "but we are willing to learn" quote just steals it, and it pokes fun at the system.
I was 15 working the summer (1982) for my rich a******* grandfather. He had a sweet T.V. and VHS set up and a bunch of tapes. After they crashed out, I'd raid the liquor cabinet, go to the den and watch 'em. Stripes was on heavy rotation that summer!
"...convicted?...never convicted"
This film could easily take place in the Ghostbusters universe.
Evidently, the Army was in immediate need of 35 year old recruits back then.
