Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851), pintor británico, conocido comúnmente como "El pintor de la luz", es uno de los mejores paisajistas de la historia. En sus principios fue un pintor académico, con una evolución lenta pero imparable hacia un estilo libre y atmosférico, llegando en ocasiones a la abstracción, motivo por el que fue incomprendido y rechazado por algunos críticos que llevaban décadas admirándolo. Tanto en óleo como en acuarela, fue un indiscutible maestro que se adelantó en medio siglo al impresionismo.
Pintor precoz y alumno brillante, William Turner inició sus estudios en la Royal Academy de Londres, recibiendo clases de artistas como Sir Josuah Reynolds o Paul Sandby. Desde el principio, sus pinturas y acuarelas fueron admiradas recibiendo magníficas críticas, por lo que Turner pronto se vió envuelto en una envidiable situación económica, lo que le permitió realizar numerosos viajes por Inglaterra y Gales, tomando bocetos de lugares y monumentos, y pronto visitaría Francia y Suiza, al tiempo que aumentaba su universo pictórico observando las obras de grandes maestros como Rembrandt, Albert Cuyp, y sobre todo Claudio de Lorena. Estudió en el Museo del Louvre de París a los grandes maestros. También visitó Italia, dejando un recuerdo memorable, por ejemplo, en sus series de vistas de Venecia.
Su prematura inclinación hacia la pintura se concretó desde el primer momento en una vocación de paisajista, hasta el punto de que fue el paisaje el único tema que cultivó, y del cual llegó a ser un maestro indiscutible.
Desde sus inicios, sus paisajes son plenamente románticos por el dramatismo de los temas tratados y manifiestan un interés particular por el espacio atmosférico y los efectos luminosos. Estos dos rasgos, los más característicos de su peculiar estilo, se mantuvieron hasta el final de su carrera, aunque en composiciones cada vez más esquemáticas y abstractas en las que el color adquirió un protagonismo absoluto. En sus últimos años vivió una existencia solitaria, acompañado casi exclusivamente por su amante, Sophia Booth. En octubre de 1851 tuvo que dejar de retocar las obras en las que estaba trabajando, debido a su grave enfermedad. El 19 de diciembre de 1851, Joseph Mallord William Turner falleció en su casa de Chelsea, Londres, y fue enterrado, según sus deseos en la Catedral de San Pablo. El grueso de sus obras puede hoy admirarse el la Clore Gallery , un ala de la Tate Gallery añadido especialmente para las obras del mejor pintor inglés de todos los tiempos.
