Loved hearing how Billy became a born again Christian. This explains why A. Brushy Bill did not seek fame or money. B. That he was telling the truth. C. He's now spiritually in a better place than Pat Garrett. D. Explains why he didn't continue with the violent life he had known.

This from "Find A Grave" regarding Mr. Tunstill..... "A graduate of Central High School, Stamford and Texas Christian Universities, he was revered as a teacher and administrator in the Fort Worth school system where he was employed for almost four decades. These years were spent as a historian, author and in service as vice principal of McLean Junior High School and Polytechnic High School. He was a member of University Baptist Church of Fort Worth, as well as local state and national retired teachers associations."

Brushy Bill, was indeed Billy the Kid. A fella by the name of Billy Barlow lays in the gravesite in Lincoln NM. This is known, but they will not recognize it, because of the tourism in Lincoln. The museum, the gravesite, the courthouse.........all of these historical markers, bring in tons of tourism for Lincoln, and they likely will never give that up. It's quite a shame, because the continuing story of the kid, is quite interesting. I was glad to find this piece of information, to add to what I already know. Billy the kid, did not die at the hand of Pat Garrett.

  • @ghostofbex

Actually it doesn’t bring lots of tourism, I know I’ve been to fort sumner & lincoln, both are a rich in history (not just from billy the kid) thats what keeps them open cuz you know, NM DOES HAVE historic sites just like any other state. I wish someday they would somehow find Billy‘s grave and dig him up & do DNA testing that way everybody can shut the fuck up about brushy bill being BTK & quit ruining NM’s history!!!!!

Another interesting thing is they got brushy Bill's name from a man that was using an alias that claimed to be Jesse Evans Jesse Evans escaped them till in the Lincoln New Mexico and he disappeared from history well that's how they got brushy Bill's name and he said not only am I still alive just yet and she said the kid is also still alive and he goes by the name brushy bill so if Jesse and is disappeared from history and that man was Jesse Evans then we know what happened to him too and he lived to a nice ripe old age as well m they said at that time only two men were unaccounted for Jesse Evans another man named McMillan and it would be three if you count Billy the kid and okay brush your bill this guy that was Jesse Evans and that left McMillan still unaccounted for Billy seems to have the sixth sense and although no one lives a charm life I think he seemed to sense when danger was around and there is no way he would go into Pete Maxwell's room with two strange men on the porch unarmed the man that says Billy was shot the grandson of the man that was there said Billy was shot from the porch he wasn't even given a chance to go into the room and his deputies said till the day both of them died that Pat Garrett shot the wrong man

The truth has a ring to it I believe that and this rings true to me. I believe that Billy was a victim of circumstance seriously it's not hard to imagine just look at what's done to those today that try to do what is right. Those guilty of crime will do and kill anyone they can to hide the truth because they are cowards and I believe they tried to do that to Billy but he wouldn't take their BS and fought back and that's what really got him in trouble the real criminals can't have the average person knowing that they can stand up for themselves because if that ever happens they will be shown for the cowards they are. The a passage in the Bible that says all of the people will walk past Satan and say is this the man that terrified the world I'm just paraphrasing but I think it means if the people ever figure out that these people aren't nearly as scary as people think they are finished and that is why they wanted him so bad because he wasn't scared to kick em in the teeth just my opinion. I would like to know more about what he did after he went into hiding so to speak.

Mr Roberts had too much intimate knowledge of the actors and events leading up to and during the Lincoln County War, as well as the night Garrett supposedly shot The Kid, to be anyone else. To convince me Roberts isn't The Kid, you'd have to find someone who all those historians missed, that participated in the Lincoln County War and was very close to Billy the Kid. The kicker for me is the fact that at the time Brushy Roberts gave his accounting of events, most of the accepted histories of The Kid and the Lincoln County War were rife with inaccuracies and Mr Robert's accounting, in several cases, were contrary to what those historians had published. Later, every single accounting given by Brushy Roberts was proven to be accurate through eye-witness accounting and subsequent historical records that surfaced after the fact. I, for one, am glad that Billy the Kid made it out of Lincoln alive, and went on to live a full life. He was not a cold blooded killer. When Tunstall took the Kid in after a very difficult childhood and showed him kindness, he endeared himself to the Kid and when Brady and his men murdered Tunstall, the Kid did everything he could to avenge Tunstall and see justice done against a horribly corrupt government. RIP Billy, you've earned it and John Tunstall would be proud to have called you friend.

People like you need to research more before posting such statements. If Wikipedia is your source of e udence then it's sorely lacking. Hope Brett's research sets you straight.

Wasn't Brushy Bill 20 years too young to be Billy the Kid? He would've been 2 years old when Billy was allegedly shot by Pat Garrett. And didn't members of Brushy Bill's own family state that he wasn't Billy? I don't doubt that Brushy Bill was an interesting man who may well have been involved in some kind of illegal activities in and around Lincoln County/New Mexico during his youth which naturally lead to him needing to conceal his real identity, but given his age, I just can't bring myself to believe he was Billy the Kid. Just because he knew a lot intricate details surrounding the life of Billy the Kid doesn't solidify his claim. If he moved in similar circles to Billy some years after the real Billy's death/disappearance, he could've easily found out all that he knew from people who may well indeed have known Billy personally. And while I accept that there was a resemblance to Billy in Brushy's younger years, my own eyes refuse to let me make the leap to believing that he actually was Billy. When I compare the 2 best photos we have of Billy, namely the famous tintype we all know and the Silver City photograph, and compare them to Brushy Bill's photos,...I'm sorry, but I just don't see a close enough resemblance. The eyes especially are just not right. And I don't care what some specialist photo recognition cop in New York says about that. Given Billy's natural ability to evade the law, it wouldn't surprise me at all if there is truth to the theory that he wasn't shot by Pat Garrett and indeed used the event to disappear into society under another identity. There seems to be more than enough evidence to support this theory if you go and read the books on the subject. The one thing I'm certain of, is that whoever is buried under that tombstone in Fort Sumner cemetery, it ain't Billy the Kid....if indeed there's anyone buried there at all. I'm sure the local business people will say he's there because of the financial benefits of the tourism aspect, but I'm sure the true feelings of the local residents are highly doubtful. Now there are just too many conflicting stories from all sorts of people recounting third hand information from individuals attempting to write themselves into Billy's legend that the real truths of the matter are no longer anything that can be proven outright. Whatever anyone believes about Billy is now sadly all down to personal opinion based on the information available. And it's not just Billy's story that gets re written facts mixed in with half truths and blatant lies and polished up to fit a convenient narrative,...ALL our history is subject to this same mistreatment.

I already published a video debunking the 1879 birth claim using census, employment, and genealogical records. And unlike those that seek to discredit Roberts by parroting the same old, tired, unsourced claims, I show you the supporting documents and sources on the screen as I'm citing them. kzread.info/dash/bejne/d39t0bSxodDLlZM.html Most of Roberts' family actually believe his claim, as I have about a dozen signed affidavits stating as such. As far as I know, only two vocal claimed family members have spoken out against him. One a very distant cousin who never met him and one who claims to be his niece, which is interesting because according to William Henry Roberts' family bible, he had no nieces. Roberts has no surviving close descendants, just step and distant relatives. As far as Roberts acquiring his esoteric knowledge of Billy's life through casual conversation with Bill's friends, I find this highly improbable, as no single individual was with Billy through his life to obtain such a complete picture. From his early days to his purported death at Ft. Sumner, Billy's circle of friends was constantly changing. How did Roberts know about the blood on the stairs in the Lincoln County jail? That the rock house at Stinking Springs had no door? That Tunstall was moving horses when he was killed as opposed to cattle, as most historians misstated until discovered by Fred Nolan, long after Roberts' death? How did he know about the letter to Wallace that wasn't known until after his death? The location of the meeting with Wallace etc. etc

I just wanna know exactly what it is your trying to prove???I understand the ROMANTICISM of Billy making it and living secretly his life out...but you have to ask yourself what is "POSSIBLE" vs What is "PROBABLE"....It is POSSIBLE Garret didnt kill him and he moved on and lived and was Brushy Bill....but what is PROBABLE is that Pat G killed Billy like it was written and he was buried....The POSSIBILITY of Him living INCOGNITO no matter the time frame and not contacting friends or family,Not announcing his Precense of being alive(Remember Billy was suppossedly headstrong)and Pat G keeping the whole plan secret and all that is NOT PROBABLE...and again in that old ladys interview she was coached and i dont care what she said in the 50's and in the 80's....She has a LOT OF HOLES....

You're making a lot of assumptions in your statement that aren't true. I will be covering the events at Ft. Sumner in the next chapter of my series, and you might be surprised to find out that evidence exists that he actually did make contact with some of his former friends. I don't believe, and Roberts never claimed that his escape was ever some elaborate plan, but rather Garrett simply forced to go along with it to save his own hide. If Roberts' account is correct that an innocent man was shot by mistake, then Garrett would be guilty of cold-blooded murder. While Garrett's ambush methods might seem justified in his killing of Folliard and Bowdre, Barlow wasn't an outlaw, nor was he a wanted man. I believe John Poe stated it best when he said to Garrett following the shooting that Pat killed the wrong man. I will be taking a deep dive into this in the coming weeks. As far as the interview, keep in mind, this video wasn't created for public consumption. It was part of Tunstill's research for his book he was in the process of writing titled, Billy the Kid and Me Were the Same. It's important to note that her statements and accounts were well documented decades before this interview ever took place and that Tunstill wasn't creating the narrative, as you implied. She was just old, she had a memory lapse...it happens to all of us at some point.
