A lot of artists actually don't want to be signed these days. If you're about your craft and building yourself and all about the music you typically won't sign with a major label. If you're in it just for the money and fame those are usually the people you see sign with big labels. Not saying all people but larger labels like to take advantage of young people who ONLY know music and are not really familiar with the business side and they will suck you dry and take your creative freedom. That's why your favorite artist will sound completely different after they sign a deal than before they got signed.
