I bought and read the novelization of his screenplay for the movie before going to the theater to watch Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). The novel is a good companion piece to the enjoyment of the movie.

Robert Redford wasn't "little known" as stated here. Yes , the movie did make him into a superstar but he was already well known in Hollywood even if he wasn't a large presence in the public eye.

I think the way public awareness of film actors goes, or went then was "not a large presence" = "little known"

His career was in a very precarious place at the time. He was on his way up, but he had turned down "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf" and "The Graduate ". Both of those were the right decisions. Then he backed out of a movie called "Blue" and the producers sued him for doing that. When he was cast as Sundance the producers of that film agreed to stop the lawsuit. Maybe they got some kind of compensation. He was in movies but he wasn't setting the world on fire. This catapulted him to the big time.

There's well known in hollywood, and there's Superstar. You even say it in your comment. You also sound stupid.

@@franknberry6397 He didn't back out of The Graduate. Director Mike Nichols didn't think he could play a believable loser. When Redford told him he could Nichols asked "Well, have you ever struck out with a girl?" Redford said "What do you mean" and that proved Nichols point!
