Technically Cyprus is located in Asia but it is often considered to be culturally and politically a part of Europe. France borders Latin American countries as well, also the UK and France have many overseas islands scattered around the world, therefore I don't think being on and only on Europe is a key matter. And I don't think Georgia or Armenia would be denied applications although they are fully or partially in Asia since they are Christian states with closer cultural ties to other EU states.

@@mariosathens1 Malta lies on the African continental shelf as well as Sicily, both of them are politically European, both of them were cut off from Africa and Muslim rule when they switched hands. Tunisian people say they somewhat understand the Maltese language, the only semitic language written in Latin alphabet.

@@ft485 i believe you follow strict geographical rules that do not apply to Oceans/Seas... The Mediterranean Sea belongs to no continent, so its island-states and island=nations. All the Mediterranean island-nations have a rich and old History but all of them were deeply connected with Europe and not with Asia or Africa. Anyway, we might say the same thing using different words... Strictly technically you might be right but as i said before, the Mediterranean islands belong to the European side.. I am saying this because i read comments by people who say that "Turkey can become a member of the Union since Cyprus is a member too" and i find this comparison unfair.

When you say isolated and Asia what do you mean. Of course Cyprus have a very important geographical position in Mediterranean sea ,but its by its self a country with its own parliament and geographical educational and cultural and linguistic informations that its similar to Greek and Tourkish or Arabic and English in different place or areas of the country.A mixture of cultural linguistic society . Similarities with the Scandinavians ,the Balkan the central European countries, and Spanish and Latino with South America, and I am sure those in other continental units have same issues. As the schools are more multicultural populist or pluralism I am sure the society have more important problems to solve.

@@rustix3 indeed. Erdoğan's foreign policy completely focused on being an ally to the West, supporting The US, EU, and Israel on any platform. UN even held a referendum in Cyprus to solve the problem and Turkey supported that idea strongly but the greek Cypriots rejected it. I hate Erdoğan so much but he tried to be a good friend of the EU. Despite the efforts EU just wasn't that friendly and that pushed Erdoğan to a more agressive foreign policy.

Ultimately it depends on if they can add benefit to the union without being overly disruptive and have the pros outweigh the cons. I think its pretty clear that they would be a net drain on the union with the amount of eu funds they would need and the political influence they sould have. also having the EU border syria isnt a great idea

It wouldn't work. They rejected Sweden from joining NATO, aren't in Europe, have extremely different core values, leaders like geert Wilder gaining power, the prejudice against turkey from a lot of Europeans and fear that they'll get Turkish immigrants. As a British person I fully support them joining.

The "tiny 3% of landmass" is actually bigger than several EU member states by size and population (around 10-11 million). So Thracia by itself would not be the smallest member state by far. The economic and cultural heart of the country is based there.

As a european nobody ever wanted Turks to join the EU . Turkey would become for decades the biggest receiver of EU Funds . Why would we built up Turkey just to realize afterwards we fucked ourselves over ? As a kurd, thank you for the informative video. There are many reasons why Turkey cannot be accepted into the EU. Socio-cultural structure of Turks, refugee problem, religion, negativities with Europe etc. for reasons such as. Other than that, the best thing could be in close relations with the European Union. A rapprochement like Canada and Norway would be nice. Turkey's entry into the EU will do nothing but bring harm to both sides.

Firstly, thanks for the video. I remember when I asked for a video regarding Türkiye. Happy to see it! However, I believe it needs a little more. Firstly, we are aware that the EU is a club, and in order to be part of a club, we have to meet some standards, also known as the Copenhagen Criteria. Unfortunately, Türkiye is fading away from the EU values since 2013. There is a fact that the longer it takes for the EU accession negotiations, the more possible for the candidate country to get under the influence of Russia. Just like the examples of Türkiye and Serbia. I see that Türkiye has a very diverging foreign policy in many aspects with the EU, especially regarding Russia. However, I ask for my European friends to bear the fact that our neighbors are Syria, Iran, and Iraq. Not Spain, France, or Switzerland. Russia has a huge influence on Türkiye's neighborhood, just like the US. In fact, whatever happens in the Middle East is because of the US. It is impossible for a country in the Middle East not to cooperate with Russia to ensure its national security. Regarding the issues with Cyprus, well there is literally nothing that was not written or said to overcome the issue. The EU accepted Cyprus as a member country even though Cyprus rejected Kofi Annan's Annan Plan. Now, Cyprus has a chip to use it against Türkiye. Türiye's stance on Cyprus will never change since it is a national issue. I For last, I believe, as Turkish citizens, we have to fight for our democracy. We have to comply with the Copenhagen criteria, improve our economic situation, and promote good neighborly relations. We have to do it regardless of a full-EU membership since the process of becoming an EU member is as important as a full-EU membership. The EU, on the other hand, applies double standards when it comes to Türkiye, which is understandable based on their interests and stance. Who knows, maybe things change for both parties and we can find a common ground. A couple of years before, nobody envisaged Ukraine as a part of the EU, now everybody supports its membership. You cannot deny the Turkish economy's potential or demographics if it becomes eligible for EU membership. I think the most important message here is that do not take your democracy for granted. We are not recognized as a full democracy anymore even though we are among the first countries that gave women the right to elect or be elected. Things could change in an instant, even in a democracy...

And as an extra comment, the EU is not a Christian Union. It is a Union of diversity and equality, and it is stronger with more diverse opinions. In Christianism, you cannot marry the same sex or you cannot have pre-marriage sex, whereas these are legal and very dominant in the EU. Using the religion argument is quite pointless actually. Research shows that a Turkish person has only 7% Turkish genes in his DNA. Original Turks came from Asia. After many marriages with the Western world during the Ottoman Empire, we started to have Western genes and heritage. In some sources, Turks are also considered as Muslim Romans. So, again, we are not living in a different geography or culture.

@@emrekubalas6724 I don't know which research that is but our central Asian roots vary from a region to another. It's not as low as 7% everywhere. Obviously we're pretty mixed but that's not exclusive to our nation and we're definitely not wannabe Europeans. Putting the common heritage we Turkish people adopted into account, we technically see ourselves more Asian than European. On the other hand, In all Europe / Asia continent related maps that exhibit all sorts of statistics, it is apparent that our country is always at the corner or edge of the maps. Too eastern to be west, too western to be east.

@@EUMadeSimple Well, the opposition party here in Turkey vows to deport around %99 percent of the asylum seekers and illegal migrants back to the middle east within 2 years. This means they are going to break the refugee agreement with the EU. This might severe the relations but it will definitely help Turkey recover from this economical and political crisis.

As a Turk I don't think that Türkiye will be a member of the European Union, at least for the moment, especially if we examine the demographics of Türkiye this becomes more impossible. Türkiye is too European to be eastern, too eastern to be European, too southern to be northerly, too northern to be southerly. I mean, the fact that Türkiye is a geopolitically intercontinental country is also reflected in the demographics (I'm not saying this in a negative way), but I think that the Secularization Policies of the New Government, which is expected to come after the elections, will contribute to the positive course of relations with the European Union. As a result, I don't think my country can become a member of the European Union for now, but I can't say anything about the future.

@@EUMadeSimple Actually, this is a topic that can be discussed at length, but if I need to summarize briefly, Turkiye has a very complicated structure as I mentioned in my previous comment. In general, my thoughts and observations in Turkiye, the majority of generation z, which I am in, feel that they belong to Europe and support being a member of the European Union. when we go to the middle age groups, this rate is half. On the other hand, we see that the elderly population is a religious segment that adheres to their traditions. The issue of membership to the European Union comes to the fore in the regions that actually make up the majority of Turkiye, such as in the west of Turkiye (Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir) and in the provinces where the Kurdish majority lives. In the inner parts of Turkiye which is generally unknown, there is an environment that we can call a traditional religious anti-European Union. What I'm more curious about is the contrasts between the z generation, of which 30% of whom are non-religious and the traditional elderly. this affects us in every sense and because of this, I think that Turkiye will undergo a radical change in the coming years. this is expected to be reflected in the elections this year, and in fact, I believe that this new generation will have a say in time. Maybe not right now, but I think that in the coming years, especially in 1-2 months, with the change of government, relations with the European Union will be more positive and some things will change.

Why don't you show many cathedrals in Türkiye in this video? It depends a bit on you how the EU wants to see or show Türkiye, Türkiye bordered with Bulgaria and Greece in the European part.

I don't know if adding Turkey to the EU is possible, but better economic ties and maybe even bring this country to the Schengen area sometime in the future would be useful.

This video is too brief imo. Regarding whether Turkey is a European country, you HAVE to mention the EU's "European perspective" policy. Whether a country is able to join the EU used to be that the broad idea of being a European country. Early on the countries involved were indisputably European. However, this all changed when Cyprus was being considered. Cyprus is a country 100% geographically Asian. However, EU member states agreed to accept its application due to having a European perspective. This means that it's basically up to EU countries to decide which countries count or not. Turkey and the Southern Caucuses have already been determined to have a European perspective and thus are all considered eligible European countries from the EU's perspective. This is without even mentioning the long historical presence of the Ottoman Empire in Europe or that the "small" part of Turkey geographically in Europe contains Istanbul, one of Europe's largest and most important cities historically and presently, holding nearly 20% of Turkey's population. On the political side, this doesn't matter. The reason is that obviously Turkey currently does not fulfill the Copenhagen criteria. It will never do so unless/until Erdogan loses power and the new government makes a 180 degree policy turn. However, this is not something that is uniquely Turkish as for example Georgia, a Christian country, also struggles with the same circumstance. It is however worth noting that the election coming up in a couple months both looks highly likely for Erdogan to lose and the united opposition have embodied this "180 degree policy u-turn" platform. Time will tell. Lastly, the enlargement stall is basically just a matter of time. In the next year or so there will be a new European constitutional convention to reform the treaties. In this reform they will further eliminate unanimity and prepare the EU for new members, both in terms of Ukraine but also the Western Balkans. These reforms will resolve this issue for all prospective applicants including Turkey.

Really interesting comment. Thank you. Firstly, the whole motto of the channel is "EU Made Simple". The initial script was a lot longer and more complicated but we cut it down in line with the channels vision :). Secondly, the EU Perspective Policy is very interesting. I also don't think georgraphy will hinder Turkey joining, but it still seems to be a big topic for debate. Thirdly, I would love to see another convention but what makes you so sure this will happen next year? Last summer more than 10 EU countries have openly stated they have no interest in reform. Even though the Conference on the future of Europe clearly indicated that there is interest from EU citizensm, I am doubtful we will have reform soon

@@EUMadeSimple Thank you for the reply. I understand this channel is meant to provide simple explanations to a wide audience, I just couldn't help myself from elaborating. The interesting thing geographically is that Turkey can join the EU yet be kept out of Schengen as long as the outer EU member states deem Turkey's border unsafe. If they can do so for as little as they do with Bulgaria and Romania, I see Turkey joining Schengen as 100x less likely than joining the EU. Lastly, the European Parliament and Commission as well as France and Germany have all expressed a strong desire for treaty reform. With the war in Ukraine and the issue of Hungary, this is ever more pressing. While those countries did express opposition, that was then and this is now. I think the outcome of Poland's election will have a big impact on reform efforts. If PiS loses, Hungary will be censured and the deadlock will ease. Lastly, those 10 countries are not enough to prevent a convention. With France+Germany supporting it, I can't see the reform not happening. It is more likely resistant countries will receive concessions or try to water down reforms than block it altogether.

@@falsevacuum4667 True. But to ratify a new Treaty you need unanimous support. That may become very difficult when there are so many countries openly against reform. Also, the reform we need is drastic - QMV for Foreign Policy and Fiscal Policy. That will not go down well with certain member States. Especially Hungary, as they currently use the VETO to get what they want. I hope you are right, but I see difficulty in achieving this. What are your thoughts on a multi-speed Europe? Where some integrate more while others dont?

@@EUMadeSimple With de facto Euro avoidance among 1/4 of EU member states, I would argue we already have a multi-speed Europe to a degree. I believe Enhanced Cooperation will become more prevalent. It is possible that many of these major reforms will be taken on by a portion of the member states first. The taboo against doing so has mostly eroded with Merkel leaving office.

Cyprus’ addition was also illegal because countries are supposed to solve their border disputes before joining, rules only apply when the Paris-Berlin axis want them to.

@@goese868 it would shift the balance of power within the EU too much for its own good considering the fact that they are still a long way from being economically on par with western eu countries making them a huge expense to the union's budget. Also no matter the government they've had a weird imperialistic approach for the last century. Add to that the border disputes with Greece and Cypro and the fact that their population already doesn't integrate well in western countries and you can see for yourself how the cons outweigh the pros exponentially.

Turkey is geographically in Europe. Culturally it is more Balkan than Middle Eastern. Geopolitical it is European. Historically it was considered European (the Ottoman Empire was called the “Sick Man of Europe”).

@@Alema213 Geographically, Cyrus is 0% in Europe, yet is still part of the EU. Balkan Culture does exist. Like, just go to the Balkans, and you will see how different they are from Western Europe. It is geopolitically part of Europe. It has stood beside Western Europe throughout the Cold War, and is an important member of NATO. Saying they are not European because they have their own interests is like saying Hungary is not geopolitically European cause they have their own interests. Turkey was called the Sick Man of Europe, they have participated in countless European wars, Ottoman victories in wars weren’t considered Asian victories by the Europeans etc. What is even more unbearable is seeing non-Turks deny the fact that Turks are European. That is not to say they are not Middle Eastern as well. They are both. If Turkey is not European, then neither is Cyprus, Russia, Georgia etc. Also, I am not a Turk.

I think these reasons are dwarfed in comparison of Turkiye using asylum seekers as hostages to Greece and further EU. It's a great bargaining chip. If Turkey doesn't want to follow something it can find more migrants to send. I think joining the EU would make it worse.

We own a small piece of Continental Europe. However, we need to look at this issue from a different perspective. Only 8-10 million people live in the European part of the city of Istanbul every day. This means that the European part of Turkey is more crowded than many countries. Also, when we focus on our historical past, we see that the center of the Turkish Empire is not in Asia, but in Europe. With the collapse/dissolution of the empire, 1-1.5m from the Balkans (according to the American studies) Turkish/Muslim people living in the Balkans migrated to Anatolia (reverse migration) and affected the demographic structure of Anatolia. Although we can see intense Middle Eastern signs in Turkish culture, we can see that Turkish culture and cuisine is not much different from the Balkan region. This makes Turkey, like the Hungarian and Finnish peoples, European. In addition, in the period from the foundation of the Turkish Empire to the millennium, Turks were heavily influenced and influenced by Europe.

Iceland is the most likely new member. Their polls already have majority support. Not sure why they don’t act about it, though it is Iceland.

@@EUMadeSimple Fishing, joining the EU means Icland will have to give accsses to continental European fishing boats in waters they see as theirs alone. The fishing rights in the North Atlantic is such an issue that boats literally shot at each other with rifles.

Just like in the US. Somebody from the US will never respect the EU if the president can deal with different parts of the country individually. In todays world most of the people doesn't believe in a religion both in Turkey and Europe and the laws havent been made based on religions. They've been made secularly and the government has no religion. We can claim that we cannot identify a country as muslim or Christian in that case. Secondly both Christianity and Islam was born and spread around the world from the same geography. They are both abrahamic religions. They support almost the same thing. There is not a big difference. So being an islamophobic or anti Christianity doesn't make any sense if you already believed one of these religions. Do you know how did the Christianity spread around the europe. christianity was once a Jewish sect. Europeans were pagans. After the roman empire most of the nations accepted christianity by force. And right now there is not one dominant religion in Europe. There are actually 3 different types of dominant religions. Catholics Orthodoxies and protestants. Europe is not united. Europe is not a race or a nation or a religion. Europe is a continent. If it wasn't a continent both north and south americans should also be european but they are not. Last one is; no one gives a shit about what erdogan says in turkey. Even the ones who voted for him. He's just bullshitting. turks are not the defender of islam or muslims. Not too much only a few years later the number of non-religious people will exceed the number of religious people. I want you to remind you that Christianity was born in the middle east. I do not think that Turkey will be admitted to the European Union with its current administration. However, it would be a great mistake to exclude Turkey completely and be declared a bad boy and leave it in the arms of Russia and China. In my opinion, first of all, all the problems with Greece and Cyprus should be resolved with the just approach of the European Union, leaving no room for doubt. Until now, they have always been two-faced towards Turkey. As a Turk, we are not a part of the European life style. We are most Middle-Eastern. But not only us. Greeks and most of Balkan nations are not European. Malta as well. Besides, island of Cyprus is even not situated in the European continent. EU must expand through Russia. But USA will not let them do this.

Geographically speaking, for instance, Cyprus is totally in the Asian continent and only 3% or something of Denmark is also in Europe, the argument that Turkey is not in Europe geographically does not make any sense at all. Remember that around 25% of Turkish population live in the small European part of the country and in other European countries and another 20% in closer parts of the country to European continent. Besides, many Turkish people are immigrants from the Balkans, Circassia etc and are related to the Europeans more than they are related to Middle East, Central Asia, Iran etc. I personally believe that Turkey is part of Europe, even the last 20 years have proven it even further. No matter how hard you try to place it in the Middle East it doesn't match there.

Take e tone, The EU needs Turkiye more than Turkiye needs the EU. I think Turks are lucky to be isolated because it forced them to find their own potential and reminded them of their own values. Therefore Turks have already sparked the establishment of the Turkish Union which includes several Turkish nations. You are all going to see the wind of change in the near future for real justice and peace.

Even in the best of hypotheses Turkey would not enter before 10 years, I have serious doubts that Erdogan will arrive until that date, but the challenge of the Turks to renew a political class which, in order to enter the EU, is willing to accept secularism, respect for linguistic minorities and overcome the Cypriot question.

Cyrus problem and the location of Turkey is not that matter. Europe itself already an artificial geographic continent. And it is always possible to find a solution for Cyprus but the UK will block it. The current non-democratic and Europe-skeptic rise in Turkey is also a consequence of the EU's policy against Turkey.

Actually, the only real issue is Cyprus case. As long as Turkey have an army in Cyprus, it can't in EU. Sure UK as always plays a bad role on all of this, but also the core of Turkish Political system is a huge issue. There is also a huge propaganda in Turkey when the foreign policy plans don't go as they want , all politicians throw the fault on EU or USA. It's a classical tactic . Unfortunately Turkey needs a hard core reform for it to be a stable peaceful EU country.

The only solution is Turkey withdrawing military and repatriating settlers they exported to Cyprus, and then political reunification of Cyprus. Anything else will be reward to Turkey for illegal occupation of Cyprus.

I don't care about joining the EU, but Turkey, or rather Anatolia, is one of the most important regions in shaping European culture. For example, the Hittites, the first Indo-European state in history, were established in Anatolia. Or the Etruscans, one of the nations that formed the core of the Roman Empire, were of Anatolian origin. In addition, East Rome, an advanced civilization from European countries for centuries, was centered in Asia Minor. Or most of the churches that Christianity considers holy are in Turkey. I can list more, but these are the first ones that come to mind.

As a Turkish citizen who lives in Eu my opinion they will never accept Turkey.

Could Turkey perhaps join the EFTA-EEA instead of the EU, if she meets the EU’s obligations? (In the near future of course, not now.)

even, and its counterpart never, are a really long time, and most people fail to even gasp that, so it's simply impossible to rule that out forever, and I really like how you alude to that in your videos. there're PLENTY of things that people said would never happen that eventually did. however, as mentioned, turkey joining the eu that's not gonna happen any time soon, not even decades from now, and it's even possible that by the time they'd be ready do join, we might even have moved beyond the need of a EUROPEAN union. but you never know

As a Turkish person living abroad i see Türkiye’s future anchored to the EU probably as a privileged partner like Norway. More freedom for all

If Turkey wants to be accepted EU, it has to accept unprecedented requirements of all EU countries.

As a Turk, I can say that Turkey is suffering. I advise Europe never to do this to themselves. We have millions of Syrians and Afghans. I am a nursing student and will leave the country when I graduate.

Turkey will never join the EU, but the EU can be a watchdog. Of course, if Turkey becomes a good state on its own, things will change for the EU.

My idea as a turk is that the current government does not want to enter the European Union, if the government changes maybe the government that makes an effort to enter the European Union will not take us anyway

Either stick to the proper pronunciation of the now official spelling or keep calling it Turkey because this constant back-and-forth really grates on the ears.

​@@EUMadeSimple Presumably it is an English speaking site. Did you know that England in Turkish is called İngiltere? Great Britain is Büyük Britanya. The United Kingdom is called Birleşik Krallık. How dare they not use the proper English names in Turkish. Oh wait, countries have different names in different languages and we re speaking English now not Turkish so Turkey it is 😂

It was actually a mistake to let Poland, Bulgaria etc. in but Turkey. They had more serious problems than what Turkey has but joined eventually.

​@@Adamczewsky What about the Roman Empire? What about Byzantinum? Didn't these shape some core values of the EU and was Turkey not part of it? What about Hagia Sophia, Ephesus, Afrodisias, Hierapolis, Kibyra, Patara....? There are still many ancient sites and many Turks don't even have much Central Asian DNA. Besides Cyprus is 100% in Asia yet it's being considered a European country.

@@Adamczewsky yes, 20th strongest economy, 11th strongest Army, twice as much territory as their combined, potentially better young population, an economic bridge between the EU and China, and we are a central power. We also own the Black Sea. Countries like Bulgaria just make other countries pay for them, even though we are not in EU we are making more trades than this kids

There is zero chance of Turkey joining the EU while militarily occupying northern Cyprus (an EU member).

As a Turk, I don't believe we ever join EU but perhaps in a future without Erdogan and the people with his ideology (radical/political Islamism) Turkey can shift into West fully and solve it's current problems. May elections are so critical for now

If Turkey fails to join the EU, what about you guys becoming an EEA member? Like Norway or Switzerland, Turkey would not be in EU but would still access single market and have free movement & Schengen if it joins EEA

I see these news being given regularly in the western media, but the truth is that you do not need to worry about this issue because the relations between Turkey and the EU actually ended completely in 2012, so you do not need to worry. Probably a political party is funding these channels to scare you.

Exactly. I also find that an interesting question. The short answer is probably "yes" as Cyprus is part of the EU, but geographically part of Asia.

EU needs Turkey as big partner in the Region, a gate holder. Turkey can have strategic partnership with EU like Switzerland does or Nordic does. Much better trade deals, visa free movement, some concessions. Actually it is not that hard to hold Turkey as Strategic partner in the Region. If EU close the doors we already see what happens. I think that is not plausable.

you are missing the point.EU DOESNT NEED TURKEY.secondly EU IS AN ECONOMIC ALLIANCE and not a military like NATO. Much better trade deals, visa free movement, some concessions will only beefir turkey while harm the EU so why on earth EU should agree on that?and last have you though is EU close the doors to turky what will happen to turkey?imagine all the turks that live in europe come back to turkey!imagine if EU block all the trade with turkey!in case you dont know 80% of turkeys imports are from Europe.try to see the big picture before you speak

The only reason they ever were and still are a candidate is because we wanted to keep Turkey in the Western sphere of influence. Just like you already highlighted, there are too many problems. They are too big, too poor and too unstable. We will never want a border with half of the Middle East. Accepting them would also be a massive blow to our efforts of enhancing our common European identity. Because, despite some Turks seeing themselves as Europeans, the majority of us actual Europeans do not consider them as such, for a variety of reasons once again. They’re also occupying the Northern part of the Republic of Cyprus, they’re being hostile towards several EU states, most notably Greece (and of course Cyprus) but also the Netherlands, Sweden and France and they have general problematic foreign relations (too friendly with Russia even at this crucial moment in History, their brutal oppression of the Kurds, the weapon sales to Libya, threatening us with migrants etc). Not to mention their grim record regarding democracy and human rights. The polls show that a majority of Turkish citizens do actually want to see their country join the EU someday. But this, thankfully, will never happen due to the many issues that would arise as well as because a majority of EU citizens would be against their membership.

@@Lando-kx6so what? It most definitely can. It’s too big and it’s too poor. And Ukraine is in the midst of a war. Of course it will take time before Ukraine joins as well. But they will join *eventually* that’s for certain. Unlike Turkey.

No need for big reasons, Türkiye is so big for europe to be swallowed. Also Türkiye is not an artificial country with a history of 50-100 years at most. They are EU’s main rival since hundreds of years and all history can not be forgotten 😊

Cyprus is in Asia and still part of the EU. Your first point doesn’t make sense.

@@TurkicWarrior There is not yet, but most probably Kosovo and Albania will join soon, but I think the reason there is no Muslim majority country in EU is that Muslim majority countries are not as developed as Christian majority countries when it comes to human, lgbt, children, women rights and democracy. As a Muslim man from Turkey, our religion is kinda against some of them.

@@utku_baloglu Türkiye is much more developed and powerful than many other european countries. Lgbtq is not a criteria for membership of EU. Only thing is most europeans are not comfortable because Türkiye has 85 million population and in EU parliement it's gonna be majority for Türkiye and also there is a fear and historical hate towards on Türkiye.Türkiye is a muslim majority country and EU members have relegion racism.That is the whole reason.When it comes to women rights Turkey was one of the first countries in Europe to give women the right to vote and be elected, and ensure equality between men and women.Also Europe wants to be Türkiye as a buffer zone against to Russia and Middle East they don't want to loose this advantage.

@@TurkicWarrior you are right about geographical reason and population of Turkey are good reasons to not include Turkey to EU, but even if we have like 1 million population and geographically located somewhere else, criteria are clear. Even though as you said Turkey is one of the first countries to give women some rights, nowadays Erdoğan government has terminated Istanbul contract which protects some of children and women rights and keep rejecting lgbt protests, these are all necessary for civilized countries. if he wins elections next month, it’ll be unlikely for us to join even the Schengen area not eu, these Islamic government will change the education system, and has already started screwing the secularity of country. So it’s not about majority’s religion, it’s about if the government is secular or not. And so it’s attitude.
