Will this SAVE Cozy MMO Palia?

Ойындар

Daybreak Games has announced that they have purchased Singularity 6, the studio making Palia with the goal to bring that Cozy MMO to launch.
Long-term followers of MMOs and Daybreak specifically may remember under SOE they actually had a cozy MMO of their own a while back called "Free Realms" which closed down in 2014 among several other MMOs.

Palia is a really nice concept of MMORPG, and really wish it will be able to establish itself. It is the kind of game I think the gaming world needs. Something cute, kind, with no fighting and no competition. It doesn't need a big population, so players should not really care of their number. You do not need other players to enjoy Palia (even if it's fun to invite friends to visit your home) It also have a VERY fair monetisation, with a cosmetic cash shop that does not interfer with what players can create or obtain in game.

Daybreak gives me the sense that they want to do everything on the cheap. The first thing that came into my mind when I saw this was...did Daybreak do this so they could use the skeleton/foundation of this game for the rumored EQ3? I mean they wouldn't want to license anything and given the precarious state of Palia they probably got a good deal purchasing it and now they could use the foundational elements of the Palia world and systems as a foundation for EQ3. That would be quite a shortcut plus they potentially make revenue on Palia itself. It may not end up being a great thing for EQ but it wouldn't surprise me if that was their plan.

I bet that was definitely a thought that ran through their minds. EG7 does have developer capacity in their ranks with Mechwarrior, Toadman, and now Singularity 6. I bet they will be able to round out a decent team within their ranks to help develop or consult on EQ3.

I'm not necessarily convinced of my own theory here, but my first thought when I saw this news was something along the lines of: "Hmm, the company that's in the process of trying to hire people to build a new MMO (probably) just purchased an MMO developer." I'm not sure what any of that means for Palia in particular, but I can't help but wonder if this was as much about talent-acquisition for other projects as anything else.

  • @gmoney546

I bet it was a confluence of factors that led EG7 toward acquiring Palia. (Cheap purchase price, talented team, pretty darn good game even at its bare bones state, ability to grow Palia, etc.) However, Singularity 6, and their network, probably can leverage talent into EG7 to ramp up Everquest when the time comes ... Singularity 6 obviously has Unreal Engine 5 experience that would be valuable to EQ3.

Palia's problem is that it need to embrace being a real sandbox mmo and that does mean combat. If Daybreak really wants to take off. They need to combine all their power to make something really great. I'm fine if that is Palia with all its assets and art style but I need reasons for my wife to play it and for my son to play it. Then after all that it still needs to be good enough that I want to play it.

This means potentially any tech or ideas used in palia's design are ripe for implementing into a new product... maybe there are aspects in palia that might be a good fit for a future eq product. For what it's worth I also loved certain aspects in ddo. If they could put the funding together and took the best of all these games they could do something really special.

I played Palia extensively for a few weeks, but ultimately realized it was just a very good idea, but horribly done. I really hoped that Palia would be so much better than i ultimately was, a huge letdown. As much dislike i have for Daybreak Games and the way they tend to handle things, i do think that could infuse Palia with some much needed progress and changes, to make it actually be engaging to play for longer than a week or so. Palia could have been a totally amazing game, but it just felt so flat, and eventho we know we'll see more Microtransations with a Daybreak purchase, it might still be for the better for the game. I am definitely excited to see what kind of changes they might do to this game and i hope it will be quite a lot

I know there's some sense of relief that some folks get at "Well, maybe Daybreak will handle being just the Publisher like they do with SSG"... My dude, you don't know the kind of dread that fills those of us Who Know with. We have seen how Daybreak coming in was the drastic turning point for Lotro's monetization practices, only recently being somewhat mitigated when they were making themselves look good for the playerbase and EG7 (spoiler alert, it's already slipping now that the sale is through). We see how, publicly at this point, people like Sev who have been there through multiple eras are barely even dancing around basically saying Yeah, we want to do X Y and Z, but I have to sell each of those things up the chain based on what the expected Cash return is, and I have to pick my fights while leaving as much as we can in the cash shop. Daybreak is when the pricing for expansions and their editions shot through the roof. This does not fill me with a ton of optimism if they do in fact treat Singularity 6 like they do SSG. Because SSG has been running on duct tape and bailing wire for years now while they get milked; and for Palia at the stage it's in, that could easily kill the game and scare off the playerbase. But yeah, as far as the direct comparison goes, the Free Realms vibe is totally accurate :D RIP Free Realms.
