Will This Morris Pass Its MOT after 10 Years in a Barn? - Probably Not...

After some work it is time to see if this Morris 1300 will pass an MOT and be able to get back on the road after 10 years in a barn.

    My grandfather hat two of these. They used to drive on 8h trips to south west England for their holidays. When I ask my mother about those cars she always has a smile.

    I had an Austin 1300GT in the ‘70’s and it was a great little car. Rear brake problem is probably a seized piston.

    @@LivingWithAClassic new cylinders are easily obtainable for memory they are the same as MGB , i had a similar problem i changed to brand new wheel cylinders and i couldnt get brake fluid to come through, i traced it back to a 6 inch flexible hose that goes into the proportioning valve it had collapsed on itself it was all gummed up not allowing anything to pass good luck

    Good result considering how long it sat. Thousands of people drove these cars all over the country in their day. Yes, a bit buzzy at 70 but quite capable. I've used Minis on motorways many times. We're very spoilt with more modern cars I guess.

    Yes we really are spoiled. I drive my X6 every day but it still feels pretty modern even it’s almost 50 years old.

    I would guess it is the rear flexi hose given that neither side is geting fluid.It usually been the case when no fluid gets through on my old cars however you are far more experienced than me Adam !

    Hi Adam . I think there's a compensator valve for the rear brakes and that's where the problem could be ..... l'm no mechanic ! I'm doing memory recall from 50 + years ago. So are you painting the righthand sill ? Took my driving test in one these and l told you about the very close call when my brother wrote off fathers . Thanks Adam .

    Good video Adam in the 60 and 70s you would see these on the motorways doing 70-80 MPH my dad had a 1300 and the swinging front calipers often would stick after heavy rain but a quick spray with WD 40 got them back in action never had issues with the rear brakes unless the wheel cylinder leaked back then replacements were cheap and plentiful through Unipart as always best regards Andy Allen.

    It was common for the rear wheel cylinders to seize if these cars sat for a while. Just had to replace a pair on my MGB that had sat for a year. My clutch slave cylinder was also seized solid.

    “Put it on my exhaust gas analyser” where did you get that? I’ve got a Daimler double six 1983 so efi and no o2 sensor. Looking for a way to figure out mixture. Would be great to do a video on how to measure that.

    If your haveing problem with getting brake fluid to come out of rear cylinders , there is a rubber flexible line about 6 inches long that leads into the proportioning valve mine was all gummed up and wouldnt allow anything through, the actual flexible lines to the cylinders were ok it was the one near the proportioning valve that wouldnt allow brake fluid to pass

    What a hassle the MOT . We have nothing like this in Arizona . In Yuma we have no smog test required and certainly no safety inspection of the vehicle . We do have DMV , Department of Motor Vehicles which In Phoenix and Tuson they require a smog test .

    I think it is a good idea. There are many drivers who would otherwise be driving around in death traps.

    It’s a 1970 one. Many British cars here in Sweden needed to be fitted with an ignition switch that was also a steering lock

    I've had cars where no fluid was coming out of the nipples and it was the flexi hoses.

    Rear drum brakes on old British cars were never brilliant, they sieze the wheel cylinders over a winter if not driven, I never leave the hand brake on when in the garage, my own car uses drums from a MK2 Escort,, from around 1975 so around the same age as the Morris you have there, talking of which your cut - off for MOT Exception must be longer than ours ( UK) , we have it set at 40 years and also free road tax at the same age, whilst I applaud the tax side of it the MOT exception I feel is wrong - now I know many true enthusiastic owners will either still get them tested or at the very least check the car to the same standards - but many don't. If that were my car, check and or replace drums , replace both wheel cylinders if you haven't done them already and replace shoes ( old ones may contain Asbestos so be careful)

    I completely agree! I think the whole MOT exception is a bit crazy. It is 50 years for MOT exception here but it needs to pass one last time when it turns 50. This one was in a barn on its 50th birthday so that’s why I need a pass now.

    @@LivingWithAClassic Well at least you have one thing right with that ruling, getting tested on or after its 50th birthday, here you can drag cars out of barns or fields and get the engine going, pump the tyres up ( if they still hold air) and drive around - all completely legal - its madness... I could give you a few British KZread channels that do just this ... I have a feeling however this legilation will be ammended, as now lots of folks are doing it and it only takes one bad accident and it gives the entire communitiy a bad name.
