Will These Plumbers Properly Fix a Water Heater Leak?

Can these repairmen fix a simple water heater leak or will they try to sell us an expensive replacement? Inside Edition rented a house in Montclair, New Jersey, for an entire month, tricking it out with cameras and then calling the fix-it guys to see what happened. The footage was transmitted in real time to a remote command post. In Inside Edition's second installment in a special series of investigations, we created a simple water heater leak, then called a variety of different plumbers to see what they would do. #InsideEdition

    I agree. Most all of the plumbers did the right thing. Especially that guy who refused to even charge a service fee (which he was fully entitled to charge, despite the simple fix). Shouldn’t we be promoting the honest plumbers?

    My water heater had a problem a few years back and I was quoted between $600 - $800 to fix it so I had my brother in law (a fix everything kinda guy) look at it, he left and came back 20 minutes later, fixed it in under 3 minutes and said "don't worry about paying me, the part was under $3 dollars." Always get a second opinion without telling the next guy you had it looked at already and then research it. Sooooo much can be taught on KZread for free that will save you hundreds.

    Doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting ripped off. That can be the service fee for an honest technician. That technician has to pay, taxes on that money, maintain his work vehicle, tools, gas, insurances etc. I am a technician my self and not the cheapest in town. I’m not out to rip people off but I won’t do a service call for cheap or free.

    Fair thing to point out about this is that those water heater quick connects (the thing they loosened) notoriously leak and break altogether. It's possible that they were trying simply to not snap that union nut which would have made it worse. You don't get a lot of calls where a news station deliberately sabotages a water heater, so they probably assumed it was tight as could be and that the gasket was worn out. Granted, that still isn't a water heater replacement, but I could see a logic to not wanting to touch that.

  • @falleruen

    @falleruen

    Жыл бұрын

    I agree. Usually there will be tons of corrosion or debris in those gaskets. Although I would offer to repipe the line. I'm not allowed to use corrugated pipe. I would tell them there is the possibility that they may need a new water heater. I would disclose the price of a new water heater, and upon investigation of the threads, tell them if they need a new one or not. I always try to disclose every possibility. I would shut off the water completely. Remove the supply line And observe. I would never simply tighten that nut.

  • @jaysenclarke8654

    I would have changed the flexible pipe for a rigid one. You never just tighten an old hose. ALWAYS change it. The price it cost for a service call is not worth taking a chance for a call back on a old hose with an old rubber gasket. That's why one of them didn't charge to tighten it because if he gets a call back the customer won't complain because he didn't pay. And if the tank is over 8 years old you write on the bill that you recommend that they have it changed in the near future. If one of my guys came back from a service call and said he just tightened an old hose instead of changing it, I wouldn't be happy.

    I had something very similar happen. I moved in my home, the hot water heater is like new, I just needed the pipes hooked to it that were already under the house. The plumber tells me my entire homes plumbing needs to be redone and it'll be a half days work and 1200 dollars lol. I called a retired plumber the next day and he fixed it in 20 MINUTES for 40 dollars. Stay safe out there

    I’m a plumber, and honestly wouldn’t expect it to start leaking from the inlet like that out of nowhere. I would have definitely knew it was a setup

    Pretty sure thats why the "scammers" recommended a new heater because, either its a setup, or something is seriously wrong with the heater. Im sure the loose bolt at the top is not a common thing to just become loose oit of nowhere.

    @@FilthTribeFTP The loose bolt? Tell me you don't have a clue what you're talking about without telling me you don't have a clue what you're talking about.
