WILL 'THE MACHINE' | Omeleto

Фильм және анимация

A high school football star meets his match.
WILL 'THE MACHINE' is used with permission from Kent Lamm. Learn more at willthemachine.com.
Will is a dedicated athlete in Richmond, Virginia, with professional aspirations. But there's a difference between dedication and obsession... and Will is obsessed to the point of never smiling, never relaxing and never connecting with his fellow teammates. He trains relentlessly, earning the nickname "The Machine."
But one day while training at a park, Will encounters a new, seemingly casual athlete named Joe, a young man who with seemingly little effort becomes his rival in terms of skill, speed and strength. Confronted with his limitations during a series of increasingly tense contests, Will reveals just how off-kilter he is.
Writer/director Kent Lamm, along with co-writer and lead actor Chris Fornataro, has crafted a sharp, incisive character portrait of a young man dominated by brutal ambition and relentless pursuit of a goal to the exclusion of nearly everything else. Though its central subject is a football player, this is not a story about sports, but about a grasping, almost desperate need that masks itself through punishing drive.
The visuals and writing take its cues from its main character, whether it's in the kinetic action shots that maintain a constructed, shadowy frame or the taut yet fragmented editing that emphasizes the methodical, pounding rhythm of Will's regimen.
The few interactions it captures form a portrait of Will's isolation, including the way he pushes himself and how he pushes others away in his quest for achievement. Lead actor Fornataro isn't afraid to be off-putting in his intense, flinty portrayal of Will, but he sets up enough shadings within the mask of hardened aggression he presents to intrigue viewers instead of alienating them.
The film opens up with the introduction of a new kid in town Joe, played by actor Denzel Whitaker with a compelling mix of affable ease and athletic confidence. In his openness and friendliness, he's almost Will's complete opposite in many ways, and their interaction is both fascinating and tense. When the underlying tension of their encounter rises to the surface as a direct challenge, it nearly unravels Will and offers a fleeting yet undeniably powerful glimpse of what exactly is driving this troubled young man.
The gift of WILL 'THE MACHINE' is how it handles this small yet powerful moment of revelation, which recasts what we think we know of Will as viewers in a whole new -- and undeniably heart-wrenching -- light. It's handled brilliantly in the acting and directing in both its brevity and its sheer naked terror, as well as in how quickly Will scrambles to hide it after his mask falls. Though it is a small but crucial moment, it has a huge emotional impact, and audiences will be weighing its implications just as this powerful, resonant short comes to an end -- and likely aching with sadness and asking important questions about abuse, masculinity and silence.

You right bro. Was XC runner for 6 years everyday my attitude was different. Waking up at 5:30 for practice really takes a toll. Somedays your tired physically and mentally. But somedays your exited and mentally strong able to beat your best times. In conclusion, someone’s attitude for xc is a roller coaster.

The football player was bullied at an early age, which created a desire to never be out matches or out done. He needed to be perfect in every way. That’s why when he saw the boy getting bullied he decided to step in right away. He may have been abused, possible sexually. That is why he felt embarrassment and hid himself from the girl. It may also be fear that she may become a distraction to his goal of physical perfection. When the other player arrived he simultaneously realized he could use him to get even stronger while at the same time triggering his inferiority complex. In the end he admits defeat and realizes the benefit of using the new guy as a way to push his limits even farther.

My first thoughts were very similar to yours. I never had the other runner experience. As for the girl, I was attracted but whenever I interacted I was disappointed at how 'shallow' there were. It was only later that I realized I was forced into maturity early and they were at the correct stage of development.

This guy was me when I was younger. People from all around my little rural county called my Rudy. I played football from like third to eighth grade. I was pretty small, but if I got riled up I could take on just about anyone. But the problem was, once my teammates and friends found out, the constantly got me mad. That part of my life was such an absolute mess for my mental health, but hey, we were winning. Eventually I moved to the county where I currently live now and lost every single game I played in. It was probably the worst moment of my life. I thought that if I wasn't the best I was nothing. It drove me batshit crazy. At ages 12-14 I was lifting almost the same bar as my dad. But at one point, I cracked. I couldn't take it anymore. And while my playing suffered, I was the happiest I'd ever been. I quit at the winter of eighth grade and never looked back. Sorry for the long winded comment but this brought back some not so fond memories

Anthony Quiroz AQ, there is something special about talent ... it can and often does.beat hard work. Eg. my daughter is a classical pianist. Reads music on sight, hears a piece once, has perfect pitch. She learns stuff in minutes that takes me days. I once played chess against a 13 year old prodigy ... got my ass kicked. There is definately something ‘special’ and hard work might compensate up to a point.

Codex C, I am sorry but that was not my point exactly. After 100 hrs it would only look as if I could do what she does. But it really is not the same thing at all. Usually, I'm okay with the abrupt endings that leave much to the imagination because you're left putting the pieces together in a creative way. But this time, I really wanted to see this story conclude. Felt like it needed to, both for the characters and the audience. But great job on the film, I was truly drawn in! Also, I felt like his words while working out and when he got mad at the new guy were echoes of whoever abused him, which is something often seen as a way of trying to gain control - abused becoming abusers. At the end when he discovered that the new guy wasn't going to abuse him, he finally opened himself up to training with someone else!! Great acting!!

Thanks for this moving film. I honestly wept when Machine broke down, I understand him completely. He was no doubt, not just bullied but, sexually abused (probably by an athletic older brother) as a youngster. The coach may even have heard rumors to that effect. This would also explain his attempting to "save" the younger boy from his bullying big brother on the street. After his own assault, Machine decided the only way to deal with it was to become bigger, stronger, and faster than the bullies. It became too much to handle when his new friend might be bigger, stronger, faster. He viewed him as a genuine threat. Again, thank you for this amazing film.

This is why I love short stories man, it's just enough information and plot to keep you hooked into the story, and the best part is that the story could go in any direction after what we have seen. Does Will fall from Grace after the new kid in town joins the team and takes his spot? Does he go into a downward spiral that Ultimately destroyed him? Does he finally except that perfection isn't just a physical attribute and he must be at peace with himself before he is truly perfect? Does he overcome his insecurities and decide to let this new kid push him physically and emotionally? Does the kid teach will that he doesn't have to "literally" a Machine. Do we learn about his past and why he's developed his persona as the "Machine"? Was it abuse? Was it bullying? Was it just obsession? All answers are possible but we will never know. It's almost poetic

This is a great example of a person who is both highly determined but limited by his own self-image and requires someone who can outdo him to force him to redefine his abilities and push himself farther than he's ever been able to go on his own. The competitor doesn't like to be beaten by someone with no training who is just naturally good. In the end, I guess it's possible the natural will still win but that person will also be pushed to try harder as we saw in this dramatic representation of the limitations that exist only in our mind and one way we can overcome them.

Self acceptance. Many of us want to be the best. It's what society tells us. I was mediocre all my life - then I got into the gym and became greedy. Maybe I was always obsessed but when people noticed me, I knew had found something that was missing from within me. I never made it. I never had someone say "I love you" and believed it exapt for my blood related family. I hate myself passionately. I am never enough. I have it all. Far more money than I need, the body I wanted, the education, the girls ans women - I am not average anymore. Doesn't matter. I have gone too far to stop now - I know it won't make me happy. And so while I can't heal myself but I hope someone else one day will.
