Question/Observation here - I'm an American who moved to New Zealand a couple years ago. I grew up watching the NFL and still follow it really closely. I got into rugby a few years ago and absolutely adore the sport. There's a lot of talk in the rugby media about "ball in play time" and how increasing that is believed to be a better viewing experience. However the NFL always has a ton of viewership with almost no "ball in play" time, and I think a lot of it is down to the quality of the broadcast. While I think the commentators here in NZ for rugby are generally great, is there more that can be done as set pieces are being set up to show off real-time stats/season stats, highlight high impact plays that maybe aren't obvious to a casual viewer, etc? Those are the things the NFL does really well between plays to keep viewers engaged. Love the show, cheers!

You sir, are an absolute saint. Thank you for that comment. All these people talking about "making the game more exciting" or "spectator friendly" should go watch something like rugby league or lacrosse. The NFL is probably the highest drawing sport in the world in terms of revenue. Guess what? It's stop start. Cricket is the second biggest spectator sport on earth and you have a stop start after every ball. Association football is by far the biggest sport on earth AND YOU GET ZERO-ZERO SCORELINES. Can I nominate you for a place on the world rugby board? You'll have my vote and probably everyone in South Africa.

Well, let's be honest. What other positive things have we got in our country? New Zealand has free healthcare. We have worthless healthcare. England has a monstrous military. We have monstrous corruption. Wales has castles. We have squatter camps. The French have a rugby budget exceeding 35 million. We have 35 million unemployed. Australia has kangaroos. We have Zama Zamas. Ireland has luck, leprechauns and the Blarney Stone. We have load shedding, that sounds like it's coming back soon too. We probably have the highest crimes rate of at least the top 20 rugby playing nations. We probably have the lowest salaries per capita for at least the top 20 rugby playing nations. We have the highest unemployment rate for at least the top 20 rugby playing nations. There is very little in this country to get excited about. I honestly think Ireland should have won that game if not for a few errors, 2 denied tries. James Lowe had a rollercoaster. Great try ruled out, unlucky ball put inside that SA then score from, touches the ball and grounds it from the kick off, which results in a pushover scrum try, rather than them having a scrum on halfway. What i think hasnt been highlighted about NZ v England was the discipline. No yellows at all, where as there we're one a piece in both the Aus v Wales and SA v Ire games.

I think that one of the biggest reasons the AB's are failing to beat rush defences is around the number 10 and 12 combinations. Number 10's, recent AB's 10's have beeen fullbacks who are moving to number 10. This is why Beauden B, struggled with rush defence. Fullbacks, are used to have a litlle bit more time and space. Natural 10's were Carter, Cruden, Lima. Mounga was affected by what was happeing at 12. Remembr D Carter, always used to say they when he was in trouble he woud just pass the ball to Ma'a Nonu. Number 12's: Nonu used to break the line whenever he had the ball in hand. 90% of the time he would beat the first defender with power, step and speed. It used to take on average 2 to 3 defenders to deal with 1 Ma'a Nonu break, so the defences had no time to rush out, they were always on the back foot. Jodie is another 12 who was a fullback, like Havilli. Jodie can be a bit static and indecisive, hence the last worldcup final Peter-Steph du Toit targerted him and was sucessful at all times. AB's badly need a 12 who is quick and can break the gain line all the time, like Aki has been doing for 'Ireland'. This will help DMac a lot as a 10.

ABs midfield, hear me out. Rieko -12 ALB/Proctor - 13 Like many - I have to agree that centre isn't Rieko's best position, but in saying that I feel he should move in one position. 12 allows him to use his speed and power to punch through over the gain line crash and bash style like Nonu used to do. He could potentially offload to his 13 who can then distribute to back 3. ALB style of play is complementary to Rieko, in that ALB isn't a crash and bash style player, he has a better grasp of organising backline attack/defense lines, better distributor to wingers. Proctor - Similar style of play as ALB. Both ALB & Proctor are like the Conrad Smith style of player that would complement Rieko's Nonu style of play.

As an England fan I really felt Borthwick made some bad calls in the last 20. Both teams moved to a territory game, but NZ really did it better. Beauden Barrett really is an ace to bring on at 15 - his kicking variety and accuracy is incredible. Compare that to England where Spencer was kicking too long to compete, maximising the time to kick back or run / pass away from the corners where we were trying to pin the All Blacks in. That led to penalties - 6 in the last 20 vs 2 in the first half. Taking off your captain, 9 and 10 really told. I'd have kept all of them on - Mitchell's kicks were better, George would have added experience and Marcus Smith has the ability to counter attack that Finn Smith just doesn't. If anything, England should have seen the All Blacks tightening up, and responded by being a bit more expansive. Our backs in particular are really inexperienced but, unlike previous years, there are a lot of playmakers and great runners with the ball. Felt like an opportunity missed because we were focused on being hard to beat, rather than winning. I expect the All Blacks to keep improving as they have more time together, so England will really need to step up next game or risk losing with a more comfortable score line.

That's a really good point, Barrett was certainly a cut above his opposite. I also thought that Christie added a lot with his box kicking - before he came on the All Blacks were the ones kicking long and too far away from anyone coming through to put pressure on Furbank. His box kicks brought Reece into the game with the kick chase and allowed the All Blacks to add pressure to the territory game.

Here's a question regarding the South Africa v Ireland game. The moment in the game when the ball its kicked, and James Lowe trys to bat it back into play. The TMO was focusing on his hand touching the ball. But the ball actually brushes up against his leg, (You actually see his shorts move from the ball making contact, when viewed in slow motion) when his foot is clearly out of play. Does that mean the ball is out of play, and therefore the ball is dead. If that is the case, then the TMO botched this one, and it should have never been a try?

  • @LeMerch

I think so. Sadly he made a second mistake in not letting the ball go out when SA kicked it, kept it in play and gave SA a scrum which they got a penalty try from. Ireland handed SA 14 free points. That’s why I look at that game as something that could have went to Irelands favour very easily and Ireland have always done this.. they either stay on top of the scoreline or if they don’t, they stay in it right up until the last few minutes and find a way to win it which they also nearly done. I think this next game is gonna be a lot different than most South Africans expect..

Yes, he was out once the ball touched his leg. But overall SA deserved the win. We were chasing the game for most of it, had a purple patch in the 2nd and quietened the Loftus crowd but couldn't capitalise. Hopefully a good video review will have us in better shape in Durban 👍☘

If we put a centre flatter and have the front door back door with the 2nd 5 would that not solve the rush D, as it creates a 1 on 1 for the centre's every time? This is a forward asking. Even if you put a lossie running that line

There is, and has been, quite a lot of chat about Damian McKenzie not being an international level 10. I've been inclined to agree, despite him being an obviously very skilled and brave player. But how much of that reputation do you think might be because the All Blacks, within their previous coaching setups, haven't structured their play around his style/skillset? And do you think this will change under the new guard?

Finau has yet to impress, might be better to bring in Vaii & tuipolotu at lock(even tho vaii isnt a big lock) with scott Barrett at blindside. Is Scot Robertson gonna cope with rush defence by the next world cup? Im a bit worried cos Rassie has bought in Tony Brown for S.A hes the last guy and the last team in the boks I would want in another team. NZRU should have got him. I get the sense coach is gonna use bb off bench a lot going forward even though i think bb is our best goal kicker. Dmac has a harder kicking style rather than bbs straight kick thing. have to say i loved Dmacs performance except goal kicking, he was a god under the highball, great southlander. I think for coach is that we were a knock-on replay away from a rwc win under foster and that regime that was far from perfect.

What I find crazy is that Ireland play until the very last second. They have a history of staying in games then winning them last second. I think they handed SA 14 points for free, easy points off the back of 2 wild mistakes by James Lowe. SA took those chances so all credit to SA. It just makes me feel that Ireland are not the type of team anyone can put too many points on. They find ways to score and they don’t give up it’s crazy.

We were very fortunate t get away with so many indiscretions. Gone are the days when Nations like South Africa and NZ and Australia just turn up for games and the rest will sort itself out. Immediate success wont come because teams have improved and figured out how all blacks play with offloading abilities. This is an era of evolving and implementing new ideas in this team. I'm not surprised by Springboks performance, especially their offense system. They had that in their locker for years but it needed someone to unlock all that potential, which in this case is Tony Brown. He has all the talent in his disposal to make them the best offensive team across the planet. Patience is what we need but its promising from the boys

At the moment rugby is all about fine margins any tier 1 team is beating any team on their day, with the tier 2 teams throwing some upsets.
