WILL IT START?? Locked up Detroit Diesel in a Michigan Loader
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Today on the channel we take a look at this Michigan 55A Series II loader. This has been in the family for almost 35 years but has not seen any real use as of late. An ash tree fell on it and knocked off the muffler and we didn’t realize until after water had gotten in the cylinders of the 3-53 Detroit Diesel and locked it up. Can we get it started and back to work? Tune in to find out!!

Get it going! Clean it up as good as you can. Those other two cilinders wil run. 💪
Get a hone and hone out the bad hole make some hold downs for all three liners and get it to turn over grind the valves on all three cylinders and put it back together
From experience when an engine first moves, then completly locks up, it's one of 4 things: 1. Its rusted to hell and back, in that case, take the head of and gently persuade the pistons with a wirewheel, a Hammer and a Block of wood. 2. You are the genius that locked an engine into the point 0, it's a mess to make a turn happen again, dunno about the english term but in german it's called the "Nullpunkt". 3. The engine compresses water, but that Doesn't really lock it, it feels springy. 4. It overheated at one point and the pistonrings are now married to the block till death take them apart... Hope i wrote something useful for the make it happener out there, over and out.
Fix it, get it running !
This is what I call a P and D project. Patience and Determination.
I always undo the alternator belts unless they are needed for other functions, as alternators have a tendency to get stuck due to their ventilation holes.
The "Ol'2stroker" channel has all the tricks, tips and techniques to revive these detroit diesels. (and the beer!) Cool piece of old machinery.
I remember it running when we built the derby cars. We moved them around with it! Around 2009-2010. Nature hasn't been kind to it over the years.
In case you want to use vinegar or any other acid in an open cylinder, you can soak a rag or a paper towel and apply it again the cylinder wall (and cover it to avoid evaporation). You can also use a bottle to sandwich your rag...
Get-r going boys!
Cool revival those 55A series aren't too common anymore, so it's neat to see some being video and saved, or someone attempting.

My neighbor up the road has a diesel junkyard. You could make will it start videos for years up there! Good video! I bet that machine could run again...

Could it run again? Sure could, but is it worth the time and money if you really have no use for it? Would make for great KZread content and we all would love to see it . But I would think the engine will need pulled and the more you dig into it the worse it would get till you're doing a full rebuild on it

Is that an invite?
Seems like a good little loader. Would be a handy little unit for lots of stuff . Worst case scenario it doesn't seem like it would be vary complicated to do a motor swap. A 4bt Cummins would sit great in there by the look of it
@dieseJL

A 4bt would be nice but expensive compared to a full in frame on this!!
A buddy of mine likes these loaders
check the blower had one lock up in a dynahoe backhoe could not get it to move at all pulled the blower rolls over free now.
Amazing 👏👏
This could be made running. Go for it. It's man's work
It was interesting. 👍
Pull the blower drive off and see if that helps, Detroit's are known for the blower sticking after sitting for a while.
Rough ball hone, then smoother one and lots of Kroil and time. Even some propane heat…..be just fine!
call the guy on the Detroit Diesel channel. Awesome mechanic.
That is why you should always put a coffee can or soup can over the exhaust pipe and intake pipe if exposed when storing it. Once water get's into the engine your screwed and it seems that thing has been getting water in it for a long time.

Water damage normally only occurs because there was no rain cover on the exhaust!

Yeah we didn’t mention it but the tree knocked off the exhaust
Nice
Oh man, that 3rd piston. Tough when ya can't get her turning over and maybe running, but sometimes they're too far gone and need way more work.

Sounds like it is in gear. Jim in Chile
Clean
Put a nail hole in top of cap and it will be easy putting liquid in motor
I'm a believer in marvel mystery oil, I have freed alot of seized engines with it. May take a week or 2 but I would bet it frees up. What do you have to lose?

Evaporust soak the cylinder?
Take the starter of and try to spin it over useing a pry bar on each of the teeth on the see if it turn over there.

This is a really great idea I hope he tries it
Wouldn’t it be advisable to remove the belts incase the water pump is stuck or take out the starter motor and lever the flywheel with a bar. Fairly obvious I would have thought.
In order to try to pull the piston and liner, you'd have to drop the oil pan and disconnect the connecting rod, and attempt to knock the piston out from below. Then attempt to putt the liner. Better eat your wheaties!

Yeah it’s going to be FUN
Que lindo que suena eso!!!!!!
Looks like the stuff I put in my body
I freed my 353 it ran briefly but then then draged a liner 😭
Use PB BLAST TO LUBE THE CYLINDERS
Como seva a mover el sigüeñal si el motor debe estar engranado a la caja de cambios
❤❤
Pull the air horn off the blower and see if the rotors are broken
Those Hamilton farm yahoos,(''HOW 'BOUTCHA?''), would've turned the fan clutch thing with a crescent wrench and if you don't believe that they get real upset and let you know, HOW 'BOUTCHA!??
muito bom!
The earliest thing to do is take oil pan off unbold the position rod take a bottle Jake wood and either pop the piston up or take the hole sleeve with it and replace that and possibly the bearings. Or after sleeve and piston out take it to a press and push it down and hone it out
diggle ball hone an brake cleaner..good luckto find out how bad it needs a rebuild..
Get a bore home and go up and down. That will remove the rust and free the piston.
Dr X is the best product to remove rust
Somebody start up the weedeater

Pour a bottle of coke cola in it and let it sit for a week. It will eat the rust.
Could the transmission be in gear shopping the rotation?

The driveshaft spins freely, we did check that 🤣
WATCH SOME HAMILTONVILLE FARM WILL IT START VIDEOS. / DIESEL CREEK
Put a hone in it tap it with a block of wood
Smack the Piston with a hammer
Dump some marvels mystery oil in it and let it sit
If you can get a needle scaler where you can use it on the wall and top of the piston then soak that piston good. Just remember that engine has an air box down the side that it breathes through. If you get flammable liquid in it a runaway condition is very likely when it starts.

It’s at bottom dead center, would have to go up from the bottom 😓
its in gear maybe
Pull the blower off and check the ports for cracks. Judging by the lack of that end pistons movement the big end bearing there is gone. I doubt the whole machine is worth the value of fixing it.
@dieseJL
Жыл бұрын
I was worried about that too. We will see!
What a crowd of bodgers! Try to undo a head bolt with a length of pipe on a Ratchet! It's perfect clear from the outset the piston(s) are rusted in the bores. Even if they did get it started the debris from the bores would get into the oil and do the bearings a world of no good! Complete engine strip, At least a hone and new rings, maybe a rebore and os pistons. But I suppose this is American consumer society, take a perfectly usable machine, abandon it, "Oh it's broken, buy a new one"! Doh!
Muita conversa e pouca ação
Do you think it's worth fixing can you make money with it
Too bad on that rusted piston
They all can't be winer's !

Don't worry..... we'll be back at it on this one!!
Will it start is stupid…. It will not work under load or be worthwhile without a chunk of money and a rebuild. All these Jerry riggers with ideas of what to pour in the cylinders don’t build engines. Not trying to condescend but it’s just hard to watch people waste time on an engine without saying something
