Will it Run? Stuck Supercharged 2 Stroke Detroit Diesel! John Deere 440 Sitting for Years!

This one isn't our usual car or truck but we've been needing a tractor to use..why not one that's a bit different! This 1960 John Deere 440 was parked years ago when the hydraulics gave up. In today's video we're attempting to get the frozen, Supercharged, 2 stroke, 2-53 Detroit Diesel running again! I hope you all enjoy! Thank you as always for the continued Love and Support!!

    Do not put rag into blower, it will be sucked into the cylinders, have a block of wood ready to put over the blower. Ask BusGreaseMonkey how the governor is setup so it will respond better to throttle lever.

    Yeah, he tried shutting down a 6-71 in a bus with an old towel. Unfortunately his wife’s car was sitting next to the rear of the bus with a door open….. The towel went thru the engine, was totally chewed up, and the remains wound up in the seat of the car………

    "There's something about the Detroit Diesel!" You hit the nail on the head, Michael...they're loud, brash, and they will pull their weight - when you take care of them, they will run forever. And sometimes, with a little determination, you can bring them back. Looking forward to seeing this working out again😁👍

    The stuff you poured down the blower is coming out the airbox drain. There's also an airbox cover that you could remove and see into the intake ports on the cylinders. The drain is there to let any oil out that could collect in the airbox.

    It's not supercharged it has a "blower" all the blower does is blow in another charge of fresh air it doesn't make boost. Next it's best to put a vicegrip on the rack and manually run the throttle it sounds like the govenor/linkage or injection rack is hanging up the way it revs then dies. Hopefully the hydraulics are easy to figure out

    A super charger and a blower are the same dang thing. They literally pull the roots blowers of 71 series and use them on built car engines. The only difference is sizing. Also... even in a detroit the blowers do increase intake pressure... they wouldn't be blowing any air through the engine if they didn't make any at all. A super charger is a broad term that covers blowers and turbos and aything else that increases intake pressure above ambient air pressure. A turbo charger is a type of super charger for example, just like a blower is a type of supercharger.

  • @1997cr80r

    @1997cr80r

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Wingnut353 yes but its not "super charging" if it was "super charging" they wouldn't have added turbos to them engines with blower bypass doors. It's called a blower on a Detroit because its simply "blowing" fresh air into the engine it's simply replacing the intake stroke. A super charger is for performance applications as its sized larger per engine displacement and typically spinning faster to create boost pressure for forced induction. A Detroit is a "naturally aspirated" engine when it doesn't have a turbo hence the "N" on 6-71N or 4-53N, the N stands for "naturally aspirated" your not wrong on other applications it is most definitely a super charger but on a 2 stroke Detroit is sole purpose is to blow in a fresh charge of air not gain performance they will not run without one.

    Great video and I love it because I have an old 1970 model 400 John Deere backhoe . I found out that a water company had bought it brand new and then it had a couple of owners before me . I see several things that are similar and then I see several things that are heavier built on my 400 . It has had a new engine block put in it and a new hydraulic pump put on it and a new alternator and it has had a used steering box unit off of a John Deere tractor put on it and it is in fair shape, but a little rough also . I have had it for about 4 years and still have several things that I am going to work on, the main thing now is I need to replace several hydraulic hoses on it, they are not leaking but look awful all cracked and split and rusted really bad on several of them . I am looking forward to seeing yours cleaned up and hoses fixed and engine running good . Thanks for the video and I will see you all later, take care and stay safe . 🤗👍💖💫

    Hmm, last night I found a listing for an old wood hull boat with twin 6-53 Detroit Diesels. The 71 or 92 Detroits are technically better engines in they had fewer problems about staying running. If the engine has a blower on it it is "Naturally Aspirated" not "Supercharged", diesels have a blower to move enough air through to clear exhaust gasses from the cylinders, the ones with a turbocharger on them are the ones with higher airflow and compression for better performance.
