Will it run? Honda CX500 Barn find!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I bought this 1981 CX500 Deluxe for only $280 bucks! Can I get it to run for $0 bucks? In the video I work on the carbs, a leaky shift shaft oil seal and clear up a few electrical and ignition gremlins. Check it out, tell me what bike your are working on and thanks for watching!

I bought a CX about 3 weeks ago. I have put about 250 miles on it and I love it. At this point I would happily rescue any CX barn find and work to get it running so others can ride this thing. Every day I feel like I want to just get on it and ride it all over the US on an epic road trip. It's the only bike I've owned that makes me feel like that even though by any objective standard it's the worst bike I've ever owned. But I love it.

I just bought a '79 CX500 custom for $800, with 18k miles and in really nice shape cosmetically, all original and complete, but in need of a few items from sitting since at least '04. Looking forward to working on her and getting her back on the road. I've only ridden one of these once before, about twenty years ago, so it's going to be a fun change from riding my old sportster for so many years.

Looks good, restore it...my brother owned one in 76, I owned a GL1000, very similar in design, GL was heavier, but lower, CX was tall, but handling was better, cam chain issues on fist batch, but was rectified in second, the post office used hundreds of them for corrier services , very much a love or hate machine and earned the nickname, plastic maggot..here in the UK, but a classic now...

@@jeepingneatus Well that bike is with me up here in the North…Toronto, Canada actually. It was originally bought from Camrod Motorsports in NYC and when I moved to Canada I brought it with me in 1995. The bike had never been keep in the cold though a winter until it went into a friends unheated storage shed. I went to see it the other day because it now has to be moved and I was saddened to see the surface rust and corrosion that has taken place. I’m now planing to hopefully give it to someone who will have your positive attitude in bringing it back to life. Again when watching your video I loved your positive spirit and determination to not give up, and when it started, I think all of us who watched gave a solid cheer of victory!

Was looking at earlier comments and noticed you found it new home. Good luck on your 650 tracker build. Shame about the hack on the harness, but ive seen much worse. If the new buyer takes the codes off the ignition cylinder, you can have a new functioning key in days. If a owner puts just a little time and money in that CX, it will run for decades. Your fuses were blown because of bad, dirty or corroded connections, and could have been fixed with little trouble. Best wishes.

@@jeepingneatus pretty dry state, huh? The Philippines is like Florida (climactically, the people are sane) so bikes rust to dirt if you leave them out. I'm pretty much only interested in the engine at this point, but the one I found seems to have been decently stored if not taken care of otherwise. If I could buy up some CBs and CXs and ship them back, I'd do it in a heartbeat, but then there's freight and customs which charges 100% on the sticker price from 81 instead of the resale price. Only rich people have the older models here and they usually neglect them because they regularly upgrade.
