Will It Run? | 1962 Buick Wildcat - 401 Nailhead V8 SEIZED! Can We Get it Running Again?!?
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Hey everyone and welcome back to Iowa Classic Cars! I bought this rare 1962 Buick Wildcat coupe a few months ago, and I hadn't done much with it since I got it other than selling a couple parts off of it. This car has a 401 v8 Nailhead engine that is stuck. Since I am trading the car off for a 1961 impala in a few days, I decided to try to free up the engine and get it running again. This car hides many secrets, and we discover a few once the engine is opened up. If you enjoyed the video, please click Like and subscribe if you're new!

That car had to have been some greatest generation member’s pride and joy when new.

Yes it definitely was
Pull plugs, check oil, soak with ATF, or PB blaster, get engine to spin, check for spark, add fuel with boat tank, hook up battery, and use lone wolf 3000...
Thank you for putting out this video in the freezing cold. I'm home sick and this made me feel better. Thanks again 👍🏻

that would be a cool one to have back
Appricate the effort you made in tearing down the old Buick, not many people a 8 degrees are going to do that for fun.. Old engine is going to be Ok we all knew that even if it ran it was going to need a rebuild. Thanks for showing us your efforts. enjoy all your videos

Those battery testers are really great, I have one also. It's always fun troubleshooting the engines!
Nothing wrong with learning as you go, that engine easily rebuilt, tons of power. Good video

I think it was way too cold to be doing that outside in 8 degree weather. Can't wait to see your new place when it is up and going. Maybe get a dog like Mortske's for comedy relief.

it was way too cold, but gotta do what i gotta do to get videos for everyone :D
I know you traded it. how-ever, If I had it I'd pull the pistons and get the block inspected. Most likely the block and crank shaft can be saved. I've seen some seized up engines w/water in the oil pan still be salvaged & rebuilt.
Learned a lot watching you thanks Ryan

Why would you remove valve covers before vacuuming dirt and mouse nest material. At least blow the engine compartment with an air compressor!

not many were made!
Nothing endeavored, nothing gained. Good autopsy just the same. Possibilities were there (somewhat) until the (un)hole-y piston showed it's face. That said, don't let it get parted out. A '62 Buick two-door with a nailhead is a pretty rare get. I agree with folks below - this is a fetching find that someone will get up-and-running in no time. Wish I were already retired; I'd take her off your hands!

Exactly my thoughts as well ! .... This Buick has a pretty decent body - it would be a shame to see it parted out. The rebuilt nailhead would be an excellent video and the result - with matching numbers - would be a stunning build. Hope the next guy sees the potential !

Ryan: The most important piece of information is "why did it fail"???? If someone rebuilds it and doesn't find that out the same thing could happen. Age is a good guess, but it's still a guess!

I bet that hole in piston didnt help any! Lol
Dug the top end dive into the old V8. Powerful cordless impact makes quick work of tear down. Ryan, maybe look at this as a reminder why you steer clear of this aspect of dealing with classic cars. Your time is better spent saving the salvageable and parting out the rest.

All Pistons are made out of aluminum Ryan. I don't think you will come across a Piston that is made out of anything else but aluminum.

Also, the nailhead engine is kinda an odd engine in itself. The best way to break a nailhead engine free is to do what you just did in the video. It has something to do with how the Pistons are raked and/or the displacement of the heads that make it hard to break free from being stuck. I'm not sure what size nailhead engine I have in my 59 buick, but it took me several months to break it free. Also, using diesel fuel to "unstuck" an engine is more or less pointless. All diesel fuel is, is gasoline with a few additives and oil mixture. The only plus side of using diesel instead of gasoline to unstick an engine is diesel is a little bit thicker and has a higher oil content. The best way I found is to use a penetrating oil. On the other hand, my buick is an odd one. It is coded as a lesabre, but it has the Invicta trim package on it. It is also a badge delete car. All lesabers came with the 364, 2-barrel nailhead, but this one is a 4-barrel. I'm guessing that it was special ordered to look like the expensive model, but be more affordable for the customer.
You would be money ahead by keeping that buick.

Those Pistons are gone trust me you need to replace the Pistons and the Rings and the head gaskets never put those old gaskets back in you'll never have that car running properly the Pistons need to be removed from the cylinders and you need to hone out the walls of the cylinders there's a right way and a wrong way to do things I have a 57 Chevy with a numbers match 283 two of the Pistons broke in for places without damaging the cylinder walls I replaced the Pistons put new rings on them and the ones that were not damaged I used Marvel's Mystery Oil to test the float level of the oil above the Pistons the old head gaskets that we're in the 283 were replaced also by me i also replaced the timing chain and gears you need to put new intake manifold gaskets on that new pistons and new rings and hone out the cylinder walls I have two KZread channels one is this one rich 220 and rich_220 you also need to check the connecting rods and the connecting rod bearings and once everything is replaced everything must be torqued down to specifications with a torque wrench by foot pounds every one of the new connecting rod bearings need white lithium grease the 57 Chevy has 16 bolts on each side just for the heads eight bolts for the exhaust manifold and 12 bolts for the intake that are connected to the heads
