Will Dodge's Electric Muscle Car Satisfy Its Die-Hard Fans?

Over the past decade, Dodge has dug deep into its performance car heritage and become a brand known for brash American muscle cars with supercharged V-8 engines and ridiculous amounts of horsepower. But tightening regulations, rising fuel prices and the rise of the SUV are putting the squeeze on Dodge's so-called “brotherhood of muscle.” It recently debuted the Charger Daytona SRT EV, an electric car that looks a lot like its popular supercharged Challenger or Charger. The only question remains: Will Dodge fans or EV buyers want it?

    dodge and other manufacturers are gonna find out real fast that the problem isn't that they're Gass guzzling or even emissions conscious customers. it's that they sell a new car for 70k plus and wonder why their sales are going down.

    Wrong. People want freedom and speed (power) at a good price... if Dodge can deliver an Electric vehicle that's USER OWNED. Or ACTUALLY FULLY OWNED and not secretly owned and controlled at a distance by the company, Dodge will do really well.

    These car companies think that speed is all that "car guys" want when in fact it's not...part of the joy of owning a car with an engine is popping the hood & admiring that beautiful v8 or whatever you have with your buddies..my dad & I never had the best relationship, but I remember or best moment were when he would let me help him fix his old Datsun...there is something special & a certain level of appreciation that car guys have for things that are mechanical...something that an electric car just can't give....R.I.P to my dad by the way 😔

    Ford also is currently selling three EVs to balance their lineup. The Mustang Mach E, F150 Lightning and the Transit EV. This obviously helps Ford obtain the required fleet mpg and carbon emissions standards. Stellantis currently offers zero EVs in the US. Only high horsepower, low mpg and I'm guessing higher carbon emission Hemi V8 vehicles. I own one of those Hemi vehicles. I purchased new a 2018 Chrysler 300C Hemi. It's a solid luxury/Performance sedan while my favorite brand Ford was no longer offers sedans in the US dropping their two larger performance sedans, the Taurus SHO and Fusion Sport. When driven hard my 300C is thirsty, but unlike the Dodge RT Charger. I found the 300C more luxurious with it's Napa leather interior, other creature comforts and technology along with it's unique styling. The prototype EV Charger misses what an Ice performance car offers which includes the feel and sound of the V8 engine. Seeing the introduction of the new Ford S650 V8 Mustang created my interest in owning an S650 GT or Dark Horse model. Personally, considering Stellantis appears to be going 100% EV. I feel Stellantis needs to sell off the Dodge division and rebuild the Chrysler brand as their EV division in the US.

    I remember ten years ago ,I watched a new Dodge Challenger turn around and go after a Mustang that had just turned around at the same u-turn location.. Probably two friends that were having a very good day. The sound that Dodge V8 engine made when he stomped the gas pedal to the ground I will never forget. That huge Dodge V8 made the most beautiful deep bass growl,I had heard in many years. And chirped the tires after every gear change. No onboard speaker can ever reproduce that. That was REAL. Electric cars may be faster but they will never be cooler. Hey Dodge, Thanks.

    Why do people keep seeming to think that EVs making noises always means speakers? That chambered exhaust in the back of the car? It’s an acoustic chamber. It amplifies the sounds the car already makes and probably also tunes the frequency to produce a deeper, bassier rumble than the vacuum cleaner that is most EVs

Still, I can't accept a new EV charger and charger. I search for and see videos about Dodge muscle cars every single day because I still love Dodge that much. But now, when I see new Dodge videos, they say Dodge muscle cars are no longer available. At that point, I couldn't control my tears. I loved Dodge more than anyone. Dodge was my whole life. Yes, it will. Because we want POWER & SPEED. EV's have been part of automotive engineering for well over 100 years and real enthusiasts don't ignore that type of legacy. I owned a 2016 Charger Hellcat. Great fun car, but the EV version will eat it for breakfast. Dodge isn't into making slow cars. Drive a Model Y performance or Tesla Plaid and understand that INSTANT MONSTER TORQUE ends all debate. My Hellcat was the car with no soul after I did 0-60 in 2.2 seconds. All of the noise and smoke of my old Hellcat ends up being embarrassing against superior electric muscle. Trump nuts think this is a political fight (in their little minds), but I guess they just want to go VROOOOM and be slow.

    I am a pretty big fan of the V8 engine. What people don`t understand (who don`t own them) is that its not 100% about power or performance. Anything can have lots of power and or performance. Its the combination of sound, vibrations AND power. Right when I start up my V8 powered car I am already having fun, just at idle. I have to give dodge credit here for understanding this and at least trying. Everything wants to hate on dodge but this is the world we live in now. Fully agreed. I’ve driven a fair few electric vehicles and while they are fast and somewhat fun initially, they simply feel like appliances at the end of the day. That’s what people what, but as a car enthusiasts, it leaves allot to be desired. It seems there aren’t any EV sports cars on the market (at a “reasonable” price at least) and rightly so. How do you make an EV that exhibits all of the qualities that people look for in a sports car? Especially when the vast majority of people demand an appliance. I think this is a damn good attempt at an electric sports cars and if I had to buy an EV, this is the only one that stands out. -- At least Dodge is making a car for sports car fans to get excited about. The rush towards efficient, all electric cars has left a large gap in the market. Apart from some ICE sports cars, there’s hardly anything to get excited about nowadays. It’s quite sad. (I’m personally really excited for the new Z. Just wanted to throw that out there. I’m a JDM fan but I appreciate all sports cars)

They bragged about the Hellcat hitting 9 seconds in the quarter mile but I seen an A body Cuda with the 318 pulling 9s and its totally street drivable and for a hell of a lot less money. There is some rejection in the farm equipment industry of new equipment with all the electronics and no way of repairs without a dealer technician, the emissions systems, and the cost of purchasing new. Good tractors built from the 1970s through the 2000s are hitting record prices. Auto steer and GPS can be added to them but you can rebuild them from the bottom up with a set of standard wrenches and then put another 10,000 hours, and then another 10,000 after that.

    To the non-gearhead ordinary person, EVs are just another vehicle to them. They move on. To the gearheads out there, its like watching a part of you die off and never be seen again. Each car is like a living, breathing part of you. It's hard to just stop caring about something you’re so passionate about. I like hearing the loud exhaust on my car or installing that cool new part that just came in the mail. I even enjoy doing mundane, ordinary oil changes because I get to spend time doing what I love. EV’s don’t give you that.

    Maybe, but the gearhead thing's always been about edging out more power/torque/speed. Electric is different & I love the sound of a gas engine. Love the sound of newer Mustangs & a Pagani is the sweetest sound a vehicle can make. Thing is, as much as I hate Elon the man, he's put so much HP and torque into such sedate looking, ugly cars, there's no denying the future is EV & we're on the verge of great things. In an ocean of cars with < 200hp for domesticated dorks for basic transpo, EV's have finally given us our power back. I love cars, love driving. Spinning the back wheels & making noise is insecure peackocking. Doing 0-150 in a Tesla Plaid is another experience altogether. To each their own, but gearheads must've known the industry was long due for a huge revolution. Tap a button on an EV & you can spin the back wheels all day with more torque/hp/speed than almost any muscle car. If it's the pageantry & noise you're after, maybe the old guard is where it stays. My friend put 480hp through a Mitsubishi Evo & it was so damned fun but obnoxiously loud. My brother has that much hp in his Tesla Y Performance. The Mitsubishi can go away now.

    Many EV owners connect to their cars on an emotional level too. Mine is simply a joy to drive, literally. It feels more like flying a Learjet with afterburners, or a spaceship, than driving a car... but, one with retro-rockets, when I want to slow down (w/ regen braking.) The smooth, instant torque and acceleration NEVER gets old.. either launching from a start, or simply goosing it to pass someone. Yet the smooth fine control over acceleration and braking, lets me drive as gently and smoothly as I want... or think. It's so sensitive, it feels like driving by subconscious thought control...and extension of my subconscious. People have to try them- it's like nothing else. It's different, yes, without the engine note and rumble.. but, it's not bad.

I think the attitude needs to change about these classic muscle cars. There will always be a place for them as works of art, but the daily driver is going to have to be much more efficient. Don't know because of your code name but in the state of Florida with this past hurricane 2022 yes this year, there was a guy who had an EV and his house and garage was flooded. The Fireman were at his house and told him to get that car out of his garage. They took the car out and he tried to start it and the whole vehicle burnt up smoked. The car was rendered totally useless!

    For those saying why don’t people like evs because they’re better (quicker, less maintenance, better for environment, etc.), the people who like these kind of cars don’t really see cars as only a tool to take them from one place to another. There’s something beautiful about hearing and feeling the rumble of an engine while being able to change gears and make the engine come back to life all at the control of your fingertips. Think of these kinds of cars as Rolex’s or mechanical watches and evs as smart watches. The smart watch does everything you need better, however with the mechanical watch, there’s the beauty of little parts working together to operate the machine and that’s what gives cars a soul and that’s what makes combustion engine cars special. Edit: I’m not trying to bash evs or say anything against them I’m just trying to clarify why some people prefer gas cars even if evs are faster and better

  • @XDM10

    @XDM10

    Жыл бұрын

    Well, its not really better for the environment given how much goes into making the batteries and charging them on fossil fueled plants, not to mention the inefficiency to mileage and lack of infrastructure to charge all these EV cars. As far as maintenance, it isn't 0, and when those batteries get older they fade out and will likely total the car when that time comes due to cost. I'm not against them but the time is not now, a long way to go before a blue collar guy in rural-ish America could make it work day to day.

  • @TwoShoedDude

    @TwoShoedDude

    Жыл бұрын

    What “inefficiency to mileage”? What are you talking about? Even if you charge your car on coal-fired power and account for embedded energy costs of mining and manufacturing, the carbon payback period of purchasing an EV is a couple dozen months. Internal combustion is a ferociously inefficient process, ~40% under optimal conditions, and that’s after you mine and refine the crude oil and transport its derivative to your fuel tank - and before you burn off the resulting kinetic energy as brake heat. Meanwhile, batteries can be recycled into new batteries. There’s no comparison.

  • @XDM10

    @XDM10

    Жыл бұрын

    @@TwoShoedDude they are very inefficient especially when towing or under a load. They are also inefficient by charge time compared to filling up a tank. Also very strenuous on power grid currently with very little EV vehicles out there, states are periodically asking people not to charge their cars. It just makes 0 sense for me! Where I live it is semi rural area and I personally haven't seen a charging station within 60 miles of my house, not very efficient for me in any way, same goes for long road trips, you drive a couple hundred miles and charge for hours. Not to mention the materials needed to make these batteries are extremely hard to mine (likely not mined by an EV) and just cant see the sudden extreme push for going "green" ASAP with very little infrastructure, it makes no sense. I'm 100% for it but to act like they are 0 emission vehicles is just stupid, mainly everything on that car comes from fossil fuels including the electricity that powers it. Very good vehicle for someone in a city, but if you live in a semi rural area and tow (ev trucks burn through a charge with a LIGHT load) it's just not even close to being a viable option especially with the cost of them and cost of replacing batteries as they won't last or will lose power in time. One day! Till then V8s in my trucks and turbo 4s in my car!

  • @purplepants491

    @purplepants491

    @@XDM10 Yeah I agree I feel like the push for evs is too early they need to fix all the infrastructure and stop using fossil fuels to produce electricity first before I’ll really consider it “clean”. I will be 51yrs old soon. I am a computer programmer, and I restored muscle cars over the years. Weird combination... I work with A.I. etc... now. I don't want it in my muscle car though. There is a reason why muscle cars are popular with people in my age group. We want to tinker with them, modify them, make them our own. That basically goes right out the window with this new EV. Chrysler has been amazing at throwbacks to the time of muscle. They have been the best at it. The body on this new charger daytona is gorgeous. It really makes you think of a 68-70 charger. But, it isn't a muscle car. There is no replacement for displacement when we talk about muscle cars. A 426 Hemi is what people want... Not a 426v Hemi. When this car comes out, the fun thing for all of us old muscle car guys will be the KZread videos. The videos of the guys with the money, that will make their own chassis, and put a real hemi in this and the batteries and motor will be on ebay. Very fair documentary, thanks CNBC. Like a lot of people pointed out in the comments already, driving a muscle car isn't just about speed times. It's about connection to the vehicle through the engine noises, the shifts, the overall driving experience. Electric and even a lot of hybrid vehicles don't offer those qualities. While they're often quicker, they're also equivalent to driving a toy car. Hence why people love driving big, slow trucks and SUVs: experience > speed.

  • @cgamiga

    @cgamiga

    Жыл бұрын

    I'm curious, besides the obvious appeal of engine noises & revving, what IS the appeal of shifting & rowing gears, for the driving experience? If it is low-gear engine braking in curves etc, then, an EV w/ good regen will fit that bill- it's amazing driving one down curvy mountain roads! Like having infinite-speed low gear, just instant control both ways w/ your right foot... pressure down, and it zooms forward... lift up, gently or hard, and the regen braking resistance kicks in instantly, as controlled as you want. Low center of gravity w/ the heavy batteries also makes for great road grip and little body roll, in those turns, you feel the G's but it is just on rails, stuck to the road. There is no lurching (or delay!) from shifting in acceleration... just one BIG head-snapping lurch when you stomp it! EVs GO. That launch grin, every time... makes up a lot for lack of engine roar :) Try driving a good one... it is NOT a toy car or golf cart. It's maybe not as "low-tech" physical/visceral connection, if you like to feel all the moving parts rumbling and moving etc as you accelerate... but you certainly feel the acceleration, both from launch and at speed.

    I guess replying to myself : there is a certain sense of technical master and accomplishment, from driving a muscle car well, that involves both sense and physicality- monitoring the RPMs both by tach and sound, properly timing shifts for smoothness w/ RPMs and accel/decel for fastest straights and in turns... it's more work, but, kind of satisfying & involving work when done well? EVs , admittedly, don't have that... but, instead of having to divert brain & senses & reflexes to that, you can.. purely focus on the driving. You don't have to worry about any of those, and just focus on your line, road ahead, accel/decel, and cars around you if on track etc... it's more focus on the act & experience of driving, rather than BEING a driver. If it is about wanting control back from the car, or not "cheating" like automatic vs manual transmission, well.. since there IS no transmission to control, well, there isn't a loss or cheat there. It does make it "simple", so "anyone" can do a perfect launch (just timing, not fast shifting), so something lost there.. but? If you do want more control back as a driver, since most EVs have advanced traction/stability & throttle control, check out videos of Tesla Performance trims on the track... they have Track Mode, which lets driver control & defeat most traction and stability features, and can adjust power front/rear as desired, and you can drift and burn out as much (mostly) as you want! It also has nice built-in G-meters and GPS track maps, and display of temps for battery/motors/brakes etc, so there is something to monitor and adjust on track etc. Main thing racers complain about is the brakes, not strong enough, and not perfect track handling, but... still amazing (and some 3rd party suspension mods to help.) Plus, the SAME car can be your beast on the track, but... ALSO your daily driver at the same time, as gentle and smooth as you want. Just , maybe, different tires :) and cheaper to burn all those electrons, too... incredible performance, but not a gas guzzler. Only if you stomp it all the time :)

    @@cgamiga Because speed limits exist, and it's what you CAN do under that limit. Public roads are not Autobahns where you can go flat out 150mph every time. Whereas when you have a car which you can control the mechanics of that car within the speed and the car's own physical limits, you find more fun within these so customizable and tailored experience, rather than having to have solely speed as an excitment factor for what would be a muscle car "electrified" (and also additionally, maybe even fake engine noise). P.S Some may mention, then what about the handling? Well, in an electric car that will inevitably weigh over 2.2 tons with the battery, you either lose handling, or double the price tag of the car with absolutely crazy active suspension and chassis control like what you see in the Porsche Taycans and Audi RS'.

    I’d argue that most have not driven one and are speaking from a position of ignorance. I think the biggest thing that prevents people from connecting with EV’s is the looks. Most of us gas guys fell in love with a car on a poster, or a commercial or sitting in a neighbors garage not making a spec of noise. We were just drooling over sharp edges and slick curves.
