Will Dawn Ultra Remove Your Wax/Sealant? Let's Test!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We're out testing the popular Dawn dish soap wax/sealant stripping claim, find out how Finish Kare Hi-Temp Paste Wax and RejeX Paint Sealant perform on the paint in the short term after washing with a high dilution of Dawn Ultra. Both of these are synthetic paint sealants that you can find for less than $20, in a future video I plan to put some waxes that are known to be less durable up to the same test. RejeX and FK1000P were applied 24 hours ago to the paint in this test.
Finish Kare Hi-Temp Paste Wax (FK1000P): amzn.to/2zn8vRr
RejeX Paint Sealant: amzn.to/3fbM9l9
UPDATE: In this followup video here, I performed an additional test for how Dawn Ultra 3X performs when washing two carnauba based waxes that have been on the paint for 2.5 months with very little effectiveness in being able to strip the protection from the paint: • Will Dawn Ultra Remove...
Ultimately, Dawn Ultra is not a dedicated wax and sealant stripper. Although it's possible to degrade protection over time, if the protection is fresh you will not see a significant impact at all. This is not an effective prepping method specifically to strip waxes and sealants prior to applying professional grade paint coatings, and should not be a substitute for abrasive polishing in order to prep paint effectively. Furthermore, Dawn's surfactants can resist rinsing on surfaces that are hydrophilic, making it seem like protection has been fully removed, when in reality it has only been temporarily masked.
Heating the water is not an effective method in increasing Dawn's stripping ability on fresh protectants. A dedicated wax and sealant remover, or panel wipe product is much more effective in knocking down fresh protectants compared to Dawn, like Klean Strip Prep-All.

    I've got a car that has had Xpel paint protection film installed and several applications of wax have been applied, as well. I'm looking for something that would safely remove all traces of wax, but not damage the paint protection film, so I can start with a clean slate and apply a ceramic coating to the film. Any recommendations on what to use, to completely strip the wax? I'd rather not use a polisher with compound. Thanks for any help that you may have.

    Dawn works just fine for cutting down the finish to the clear coat. I have a five year old Tacoma that I've waxed three times. One wash with Dawn and the water stood everywhere. Now after a fresh coat of Turtle wax it shines like it did when it was new. Every time I washed it with the various car wash soaps, and I wash it alot, they have a wax in them that leaves a layer that builds up. In a couple of years or so I'll Dawn it again and start over.

    Nice review and demonstration. I would not recommend using Dawn but if nothing else or out of your favorite Auto Wash Soap, use Dawn which is better than any other Dish Soap. Hopefully, people should know the 3M acquired Meguiars and Turtle Wax some years ago. 3M has pushed and gone further in making Turtle Wax products better than Mequiars even though both Brands are owned by 3M. Chemical Guys (MIC_506 Microfiber Towels) and Adams (Adams Detail Spray) only have a couple products worth obtaining. The Rag Company offers very little. The problem with 303 Products is Longevity because most all of their products contain 80 percent or more Distilled Water and are considered to be Water-based. Mother's is not very good. Armor All is one of the worst. Car Guys and Groit don't offer much of anything.

  • @WaxMode

    @WaxMode

    4 жыл бұрын

    4:1 is a pretty heavy dilution ratio. Any decent wax or sealant should easily be able to resist Dawn, especially in the short term. The point of this is to show that Dawn should not be used as a dedicated wax/sealant stripper, other products are much better at doing this, without leaving behind heavy masking surfactants like Dawn leaves behind.

    Very good, thanks for taking this myth down :) What do you for the plastic trim at the top of the hood? Always beads great in all your videos.

  • @WaxMode

    @WaxMode

    8 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! The beading on the trim is a result of a mash up of a bunch of different spray on maintenance products that I use as a drying aid prior to polishing the test sections off. Underneath that beading is some actual trim products I've been testing out. The left side facing the car is Turtle Wax Jet Black Endura-Shine Trim Coating, it darkens nicely and it's VERY durable. In fact, I'm not sure exactly how I'm going to get it off if I wanted to test another product on that side of the trim. You're not going to get decent beading out of this product alone, so that continued use of spray waxes/sealants over top of the trim is creating a nice beading effect. If you want to try it out I would really advise testing a small section first to see if you like the finish it produces before going around the whole trim. On the other side is Wolfgang Exterior Trim Sealant, and this produces a more natural protectant look as opposed to a darkening effect like the Turtle Wax. Outstanding for trim in decent condition that you want to seal, it's durable as well and you're going to get great water beading from the sealant alone.

    Yeah 3oz for 2.5 gallons was definitely overkill, this Ultra formula is pretty concentrated stuff. For polishing I've been running Buff and Shine pads and I've got a handful of different polishers. I use a Makita 9227c or Dewalt 849x for compounding/heavy polishing and I finish out with the Griot's dual action polisher or Porter Cable 7424. Recently grabbed the latest version of the Harbor Freight dual action polisher to see how it fares against the Griot's. M205 and M100 I use as my polishing liquids, they're an excellent value for the performance. To prep this paint before testing new products I throw a black Buff and Shine pad on the Griot's polisher and do a few light passes with M205.

  • @WaxMode

    @WaxMode

    6 жыл бұрын

    Many of the paint cleansers will prep the paint nicely and take care of what's on the paint. The problem for product testing is some of them leave behind their own water signatures compared to abrasives, beading water more or less aggressively than others, makes it hard to tell at what point we're fully removing the previous wax and what exactly is the cleanser leaving on the surface of the paint itself to have this effect? Ultimately, paint cleansers and glazes are a great prepping options for those who like to wax frequently and I would personally go this route as they clear up the hard water feeling that can quickly rob the paint of slickness after weekly washes for those who are forced to wash with hard water out of the hose. I would often use them to make the process of applying different paint waxes much more enjoyable on a super smooth glazed or cleansed surface. Your panel wipe products like Eraser, Gyeon Prep, or diluted IPA mixes will do very little on fresh products to remove them. I will eventually have a video with how different paint cleansers and glazes behave with cured coatings so we can see just to what extent they're able to really remove the coating. With M205, the clearcoat is certainly being shaved down especially at the rate I'm working on the paint. But as a regular enthusiast, you will be able to finish polish many many times without worrying about paint thickness unless you or someone has significantly compounded the paint prior to your maintenance polishes. This paint I have never used a heavy abrasive on it, so I preserved the paint thickness to the fullest before I began extensive testing.

  • @WaxMode

    @WaxMode

    7 жыл бұрын

    Trying to finish out 800 grit sanding marks is too rough for the compound/polish to handle, you need to finish out the surface to a finer grade to get better results. Try washing with Dawn to dissolve the polishing residue left behind. After spraying the clear, it's a good idea to give it a few days to cure and harden before sanding, I would sand at 1500 grit and follow up with 2000+ and then go with the compound/polish with a polisher. If you notice you're not leveling it out fast enough with 1500, you can move to a heavier grit but just know that you're balancing how level you want the paint to look with how much clearcoat will remain after everything is done. Also, if you only sprayed a thin amount of clear on the surface, that 800 grit may have cut through too much clear and you may have to respray it.

    @chaotic/Silence - Check out my video here for the hot water Dawn test against the Griot's waxes: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eqWlt9ysY6naZLw.html In the short term, Dawn has been very ineffective in wax/sealant removal regardless of the temperature of the water involved. I've seen Scott's video and this is why I made the follow up test. If you're dealing with a low surface tension wax/sealant, Dawn may produce a hydrophilic sheet but this can be because of the surfactants which are quite heavy from Dawn.

    Will Dawn soap dull black paint and plastic on a motorcycle ? Not sure what soap to use

  • @WaxMode

    @WaxMode

    3 жыл бұрын

    Use any regular car wash style soap found over the counter in the auto section to wash your bike. Dawn can also be used as a soap, use an ounce per few gallons of water and you won’t dull the finish unless it’s already dull. Continued use of Dawn as your main soap has been said to dry out plastic or rubber trim over time, but occasional usage has never caused any visible damage in my experience. Also for a bike, I recommend you look into rinseless wash soaps like Optimum No Rinse, or Griot’s Brilliant Finish Rinseless Wash, McKee’s 37 N-914, or Wolfgang Uber Rinseless. This method is extremely effective and convenient especially for motorcycle maintenance cleaning/washing, safer than waterless washing.

    how long does a paint last without having a sealant on it ?

  • @WaxMode

    @WaxMode

    7 жыл бұрын

    That depends on a lot of factors, mainly how well the paint was prepped before spraying, the quality of the basecoat and topcoat (clear), and your environment. Without a sealant if you're here in Florida, this sun is going to weather the paint fairly quickly and this Honda had a few years of no protection or wash maintenance and the paint was really cloudy. Minimal swirls because it was rarely ever washed, but really lacking that glossy finish and this was caused by the sun and UV rays beating down on it constantly. Now I've been cycling test spots for years with various products and it's maintained its gloss really well. I've seen many 2010-2013 cars here with fully rusted roof/hood/trunk areas due to the paint being practically baked off of the surface and it never being maintained. Regular maintenance and protection would easily prevent this from happening.

    Yes I’ve worked with Wash Plus a lot. The problem with this strip soap, is in order to take off fresh products you need to use it heavy with strong pressure. This has left behind light, but significant marring in the process, and it usually takes two heavy applications applied directly to the wash mitt without much water on the paint to really knock down products. At the end, it’s more effective to just polish the paint at this point with a polisher and abrasive because you’re not leaving marring behind that needs to be cleaned up.

    On older wax/sealants it may be more effective. But in that case I’m likely to still prep the paint through mechanical decon (clay) followed up with a polisher, and those will tackle through any remaining remnants of the protection. The question everyone needs to be asking, is why are they specifically trying to remove their protectants outside of the decon and polishing process? If the protection is fresh then there are clearly better options compared to Dawn soap, and if they are old then the paint likely needs a mechanical decon/polishing anyways.

In Florida, electric bills for trying to keep the 90-100+ heat out of your home is much more of a concern than a few gallons of water out of a hose. Most women I know use more water to shower than he used in this video, literally an hour or until all the hot water is gone. I’ve never heard anyone complain about a water bill unless they had a break in the line or something else; even people who water their lawns and landscaping. Such a non issue in most places.

    Actually, I'm calling on you to retest Dawn. Dawn Ultra and Dawn original are two entirely different products. Dawn ultra has bleaches and brighteners in it. This is why it's not used it oil spill situations to clean off animals. 2x concentrated DOES NOT MEAN it's double Dawn. Please redo the test with ordinary Dawn and show us the results. Maybe it's the same, maybe it's better, we won't know until you do the test! Also Meguiar's discontinued the Meguiar's Car Wash Plus product (G25024), so now what do you use?

  • @WaxMode

    @WaxMode

    4 жыл бұрын

    I still continue to prep all of my tests with abrasives and the polisher in order to provide a clean slate. With Meguiar's Wash Plus, I needed heavy pressure and multiple applications when applied directly to my wash media in order to really knock the LSP's down, this heavier pressure caused marring in pretty much every test I ran with it. I use Klean Strip Prep-All as a pre- and post-polish panel wipe which is much more effective compared to any "strip wash" style soap on the market, although some LSP's can still be resistant against it. Do they even still sell the non-Ultra formula of Dawn? I haven't seen it over the counter nor on their website. Most of the bottles of the Ultra line have the ducks right on the front. I picked up Dawn Ultra Heavy Duty recently to run some tests.

    This paint was hammered by permanent love bug etching by the time I started working on it. So it was a great candidate for some heavy testing. The paint is also pretty soft, the clay actually causes some light marring that I would want to clean up with a light polish. You also have some clay bars that advertise that they won't remove the wax layer, so with an abrasive I get to further reassure my viewers that the paint has been well prepped with a universally agreed method of wax/sealant removal before I test new products.

    I can wash the paint 30 consecutive times with hot tap water using a 1oz to 1 gallon dilution of Dawn Ultra 3X and still not tackle through a fresh carnauba wax layer, I did this using Griot’s Best of Show Paste and Premium Carnauba Wax in my follow up video. Even at 2.5 months old, Dawn wasn’t able to tackle through the waxes. If the product is not effective in the short term at knocking down protectants, then it should not be used as a dedicated wax/sealant stripper, that’s my perspective on the Dawn topic. Dawn, like any high concentrated surfactant cleaner, is able to greatly impact any low surface tension protectant, had I run the same test on top of DPC Armor compared to the Griot’s carnauba waxes, the viewer would come to a conclusion that Armor is the less durable protectant by a longshot because Dawn causes Armor to sheet flatter much faster. But the absence of strong water repellency doesn’t mean a product has been stripped from the surface, rather it can potentially be masked by surfactants that are not easy to completely rinse off from these products that aren’t very hydrophobic to begin with, like Armor.

    If you're trying to remove a FRESH layer of hybrid wax or synthetic sealant less than a day after with dish soap then of course it won't work! These waxes are meant to protect your car from months of exposure to UV, rain, snow, salt, mud, fallout etc (and even something as strong as dish soap). The protection degrades over time and when it has degraded, THEN it is susceptible to removal using dish soap. All you're showing is that your waxes are working properly, not that dish soap doesn't work to remove degraded old waxes/sealants. Wait 30-60 days and then try dawn, it'll work for sure.

    In my follow up video I put Dawn against the Griot’s paste waxes after a 2.5 month test session with unconvincing results. kzread.info/dash/bejne/eqWlt9ysY6naZLw.html I’d say most people familiar with Dawn’s recommended use as a strip wash are unaware that it isn’t effective in the short term at all against a wide variety of products. They only hear to use Dawn to strip clean the surface and that’s it. In my testing, Dawn is not an effective wax stripper period, and should not be used with the intent of removing any LSP from the paint, no matter how long it has been on the surface.
