Will Dawn Ultra Remove Your Carnauba Wax? Let's Test!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I put Dawn Ultra dish soap up to the test for a short term and long term wax removal test, check to see how this soap does in attempting to remove two carnauba waxes from the paint; the Griot's Garage Premium Carnauba Paste Wax and Griot's Best of Show Paste Wax. Please check the link below for my first test video with Dawn Ultra against Rejex Paint Sealant and Finish Kare 1000P Hi-Temp Paste Wax.
Will Dawn Ultra Remove Your Wax/Sealant Part 1: • Will Dawn Ultra Remove...
Griot's Garage Premium Carnauba Paste Wax & Best of Show Paste Wax - WaxMode Review: • Griot's Garage Premium...
The paint was prepped using Griot's Garage BOSS Perfecting Cream, this is a light finishing polish. CarPro Eraser was used after Perfecting Cream to remove the polishing oils left behind. For the grey test panel the waxes were applied 3 days prior to this test. Dawn was diluted at a ratio of 1oz per 1 gallon of water. 10 Washes were performed with the regular water temperature out of the hose, followed up with 10 additional washes with as hot as I could get the water from out of the tap (just under 120F). The final wash and rinse was Dawn dumped undiluted on the paint and worked heavily in with the microfiber wash mitt.
On the blue test car the waxes have been enduring a 2.5 month durability test, the first initial wash and rinse is performed with Meguiar's Hyper Wash soap, followed up with Dawn Ultra for 10 wash and rinses.

    Hi Waxmode.. Nice video👍🏼 Just want to share with u... My xperience with removing wax and sealant... i found out that "wax and grease remover", something like PREP-ALL, Duplicolor or any paint prep solvent that the body shop used...will remove wax or sealant from the panel for good and these products not only performing but they are also inexpensive. Another solvent that is the ultimate LSP killer for me is of course "thinner". Not only thinner can remove wax and sealant, but also thinner will mostly remove a coating...but thinner is not safe for clearcoat in my opinion. The Strongest yet safest LSP remover for me, is still the Wax and grease remover i mentioned above. Thanx.

    I agree with the results. The wax I normally use is P21S carnauba because it has no abrasives, leaves no white residue and doesn't smear like typical retail wax. After 8 months of rainy weather and no car washing, followed by Spring cleaning using Dawn to clean off grease, road film etc., the surface still reacts to water just like your front door panel. To get the wax off, I use Menzerna's lightest polish PO85. Only then is there no water beading, like your rear passenger door.

    Thank you so much for this video. It answer many questions I have had but never answered. But now I have a few other questions. I have a black Corvette. I use Griot's Best of Show Paste Wax, 3 or 4 times a year. I Use the Groit's detailer after washing. When applying another coat of 'Best of Show Paste Wax' am I suppose to strip the car? I don't have a buffer. What do you think of 'Polish Angel Master Sealant '? Can I apply this 3 or 4 times a year with only washing prior to application? Thank you!!

    Hey Ron, no need to strip the old wax off prior to reapplying it to the paint. With something like Master Sealant, it's possible if you try to seal this over top of the wax that there could be an impact in the behavior of the sealant on top, possibly reduced durability but I actually don't have any experience with Master Sealant to confirm. I really like Polish Angel High Gloss, Cosmic Spritz, and Rapidwaxx. Very hydrophobic, very easy to work with, smooth feeling but not the slickest products. Super pricey though, I wish High Gloss and Cosmic Spritz were in the $30-40 range for that small 200ml amount, but they have me hooked on them. I may try picking up Master Sealant in the future, but yes that 3-4 applications should get you through the year if you're washing regularly based on the reports from the some of the guys on the forums that have worked with it. Are you working with the Best of Show Detailer from Griots? I'm a huge fan of this detailer, smells fantastic, looks great, easy to work with.

  • @WaxMode

    Jason Lau - Wash Plus on this soft and sticky Honda paint will leave behind significant light marring when used undiluted into the wash mitt as a wax/sealant stripper. There’s a lot of potential in this type of soap, but you will need to be careful on softer paints or skip Wash Plus altogether if you’re not in a position to remove the potential marring afterwards with a finishing polish.

    Guys thats exactly why I asked about a test being done. Ive watched Scott and like what he says although I've rarely seen him do a full wash on anything except a panel or a tire. And as much testing done on this channel removing even the micron levels of clear coat will take a toll. Even in the video he says the same thing and is looking for a product that will strip off the wax without having to polish.

    Purple Power Vehicle & Boat in the short term at a regular dilution ratio is not going to have much of an impact in the short term on these waxes. What I'm planning on doing is to test it at a much higher dilution at basically 1:1 with distilled water to see if we have an impact and then test full undiluted strength. Love the way Purple Power smells though!

    Maybe you mentioned this in another video, but if dawn is not effective enough what is your preferred method/product to remove old waxes and sealants before applying a new layer? I have had good luck with purple power vehicle and boat wash, but even that takes a few washes to completely remove old sealants.

    What if I increase the amount of dawn soap in water will it strip the wax

  • @WaxMode

    @WaxMode

    5 жыл бұрын

    I’ve worked with heavy concentrations of Dawn with still very poor or no impact at all, just depends on the wax and many times it’s just the surfactants in the soap masking the performance of the less hydrophobic wax. If wax removal is your goal without using abrasives, you’re better off washing the paint with a regular soap, and then following up after drying using a microfiber and a solvent based wax/grease remover like Prep-All from Klean Strip. This is designed to truly penetrate and delaminate the wax, however even on some waxes these solvent based cleaners are not 100% effective. But much more effective than Dawn.

  • @WaxMode

    @WaxMode

    I like to pull out the polisher as often as I can. In a real world situation where I didn't need to remove swirling, on already polished paint I would use a non abrasive paint cleanser on a light pad, S100 Cleanser and McKee's 37 Coating Prep Polish are two that I've been working with the most. After this step you should have a nicely prepped surface that will do a good job to work into the top sealant or wax on the paint without removing any clear coat. I haven't found a consistent enough chemical wax remover yet for fresh waxes and sealants. Otherwise I'll use a light abrasive finishing polish like Meguiar's M205.

  • @WaxMode

    I have been working with the gallon size of Prep-All from Klean Strip. Better pricing than the IPA boutique sprays, better feeling too compared to regular IPA/distilled water mix. However, bit of warning on the solvent vapors, I've used much worse smelling wax and grease "removers" but Prep-All does have a bit of a heavy vapor that you need to be aware of and use with proper ventilation if you're spraying it on the surface like me. Very effective on removing polish/compound residue, and can really knock down some fresh waxes and sealants. Much better at this compared to Duplicolor and Rustoleum.

    A non abrasive paint cleanser will do a good job on old waxes and sealants as a pre-wax step. Mckee's 37 Coating Prep Polish is non abrasive and I've enjoyed working with it, S100 Shine Enhancing Cleanser will work as well as many other similar products. Meguiar's Wash Plus uses mild abrasives which can scrub off the waxes and sealants when used undiluted into the wash mitt, the wax and grease remover can work on some waxes, otherwise a light finishing polish will get the job done and this is still my preferred method.

    These two waxes held up really well against extended washes and rinses with Adam's Strip Wash directly after washing the 21 times with Dawn in the short term test - I tested the Adam's at 1 oz to 1 gallon dilution, and did apply it undiluted and these waxes were very resilient even after enduring heavy washes prior with Dawn Ultra.

    Lex Selfmade Life Tape lines were used on both the outer edges (following the body lines of this panel), and tape down the middle to separate the two waxes I’m directly comparing side by side. I don’t like to have a non waxed section down the middle so I move the tape line over after applying the wax on the second half, so the differing wax portions meet each other exactly in the middle. Pretty hard to showcase a reactive wax/soap durability test without rinsing with water.
