Will big changes for Saints, Derek Carr lead to better results in 2024? | Inside Black & Gold

Спорт

The New Orleans Saints have changed about as much as you can in one offseason, at least on offense. Will the new look allow Derek Carr to succeed early and often? On the latest episode of the Audacy original podcast Inside Black & Gold, Saints sideline reporter Jeff Nowak and WWL sports director weigh on what this offseason has shown for DC so far, and where things could be going. We also hear insight from WWL’s Deuce McAllister on names like Kendre Miller and Taysom Hill, then dive in on the lack of a true kicker competition and what types of new wrinkles the new kickoff can bring.
0:00 - Segment 1: Can Derek Carr Shine in New Saints Offense? Here’s What We Know
... A lot has changed on the New Orleans Saints offense heading into Year 2, but will it lead to success for Derek Carr and Co.? Jeff and Steve kick off today’s episode by diving in more on what they’ve seen from QB1 so far and his post-minicamp comments on detail-oriented coaches, welcome criticism and a newfound leader in the OL room.
26:13 - Segment 2: What Will Saints Plan For Kendre Miller & Taysom Hill? Deuce Breaks it Down
... The New Orleans Saints have a lot of questions, and WWL’s Deuce McAllister has answers. We hear from the Saints legend on his outlook for Kendre Miller heading into Year 2, what Taysom Hill needs to do to stay on the field and what workload he should be expecting, big changes coming with the new special teams wrinkles and a lot more.
47:48 - Segment 3: Special Teams Will Be a Wild Card for Saints (and everybody else)
... The New Orleans Saints had a pair of kicker battles go down to the wire last preseason. Don’t expect to see that again, with Lou Hedley and Blake Grupe owning those jobs. We hear from Saints special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi on his thoughts on both second-year players, why criticism of Lou Hedley’s leg strength might be a bit overblown, then we dive into some of the new wrinkles and big changes ahead in the new kickoff world.

There is no reason the Saints can't be a playoff team this year. As long as Carr can continue where he left off the last 7 games, they could be an 11 win team

Love the show. My wife and I are in D.C. most of the time, so we rely on Jeff n Steve to keep us updated. I don't think Carr will be the issue. Everyone is taking it for granted that with this new scheme, the Saints will be able to run the ball. But, if they get stuffed, play action won't work. What then? I'm an optimist. I think they will find success running. 🤞

I hear ya, I was just saying that’s not really on the team to put him out there at that point. They do formal press conference interviews as requested in camp, but during OTAs/minicamp/regular season it’s just a matter of going up to those guys and asking questions.

Why did sports people start saying "leader of men?" What else would an NFL player be leading? Are they not able to lead anything else but men? They still use the old fashioned "leader," but I see a lot of the time they want to let us know they are talking exclusivley about leading men and not something else, like giraffes.

It will probably get moved to the 35 in the future. The 30 is not enough of a penalty for just booting it through the end zone. Coaches will very quickly resort to giving the ball at the 30 rather than accept the risks associated with trying to get the ball into the landing zone and on top of that going down and making a tackle inside the 30. That's the irony of the new rule. The more successful (as in the more exciting) it becomes the more likely the coaches are to just give it to them at the 30. I'd vote for putting all touchbacks at the 40, too, but not if the player catches the ball on a fair catch. Fair catches should go to the 20. Roster construction could definitely be impacted. Teams might elect to keep a kickoff specialist who is not good enough to kick FG's, but who is good enough to get it into the landing zone between inside the 20 and in bounds, and who is also athletic enough and big enough to make tackles.

Yep, I agree. I think you’ll see a lot of action early in the season, but the first time a team gets burned they’ll be like … not worth the risk. 35 would probably split the difference.

I have to say on the AK front, has everyone forgotten that he was suspended last year and was also very much a part of the team drama? I’m not sure if it wouldn’t be better to clean house on these disgruntled, aging players. The simple fact is Taysom is old too, the difference is you don’t see him having an entitlement issue or bad attitude.

This is a talking point that people say a lot so they assume it must be true, but it doesn't make sense. They didn't draft Tyjae because they don't value players higher if they played nearby and he doesn't really fit the RB profile they look for in the scouting process. If the dude went to Wisconsin you wouldn't be talking about him.

They all need to put it on the field. All this talk sounds good. Sounded good last year. Stop excusing things. QB was mid last year until the end when literally everyone is gassed. Line on both sides were weak. Nah they gotta get it right. We've seen systems go from one coordinator 2 another and do just fine. If they can't just rebuild. From HC down to punter

@yellaboiroc3188 4th quarter yards don't count? 🤔 If you're trying to say "garbage time stats", I did the math already on those. He had a total of 88 yards and 1 touchdown when they were losing by more than 1 score in the 4th quarter. Not much stat-padding there. As far as mediocre, I would say a top 10 offense and a top 10 defense last year puts them above mediocre. A dropped pass in the end zone in 1 game and a blown 17-0 lead in another game due to qb injury, and they were division winners and in the playoffs.
