Just 6 months ago, AI art was laughable; and now it almost looks like the real thing. @@OblivionKnight76 First of all, ML model generated images did not look laughable 6 months ago at this point, more like a year ago for the current general models. However, specialized models that only had to produce specific output with much smaller variance could generate near-perfect images YEARS ago. Did everyone forget projects like ThisPerson/Waifu/XDoesNotExist generating profile pictures of photorealistic humans and well drawn anime girls in 2018/19? The speed of "advancement" has everything to do with the tremendous increase in the amount of input data working hand in hand with the state of the art of computational power. The rapid improvements you've been seeing over the past 12 months are basically just the result of fine-tuning these models, not some etherial advancements in artificial intelligence. The actual human engineers working at these companies have tremendous obstacles to overcome as they try to push generative ML into even more complex territories, it is not something some "AI" just does on its own by self-improving. It's funny how suddenly every last person became an expert on how quickly these human engineers will blaze through these very real and difficult issues while other engineers are expected to easily overcome the impending death of Moore's Law to match. Look, machine learning and AI will continue to advance at a decent pace, but don't parrot these talking points that we're on some kind of never ending exponential curve. No, every wave of seemingly rapid advancement so far was the result of a tremendous leap in the amount of training data and the subsequent fine-tuning of the model, which typically takes longer the larger the model is, all of which continues to require incredible amounts of computational power. None of these resources are infinite or expected to increase exponentially moving forward.

What I feel like a lot of people don't get- is that even if AI won't "replace" animators/artists completely- it will make it A LOT harder to find work in these fields. Companies won't need large animation/design/art teams anymore. They'd only need a few animators/designers/artists working alongside AI, thus drastically reducing the amount of jobs available on the market. Which means a lot less people will be able to find work in their profession, the thing they're passionate about, and they'll have to turn to other fields in order to... well; live, make money. Any sort of automation necessarily makes people lose jobs. Saying it's "just a tool" doesn't change this fact. Sure, AI may never be able to replicate the very fundamentally human aspects of art, but it still does a lot of work that was previously only possible for a human to do. I also don't think AI will genuinely improve the working conditions of animators. If they have to crunch like crazy rn, it's not like the moment AI takes some of this burden off their backs it'll al suddenly be better. Imo all it means is that they'll work less hours, therefore make less money. Or They'll just get more projects. Corporations will always try to milk everything they can, and they won't pay employees the same for less work. It's just not how capitalism functions unfortunately. By the example given in your videos, it seems like background artists are gonna be an easy first target. They may not be completely replaced, but companies won't need as many of them as they do now (aka- some will lose their jobs), and they won't need them to work as many hours (aka- they'll probable earn less). Ever since the industrial revolution people have been losing jobs to automation, and artists are not gonna be any different. We always thought ourselves to be somehow above other types of labor or craft but at the end of the day everything can and will be automated. In the not so far future, machines will do everything for us and all humanity will have left is work in tech support and tech maintenance. "It's just a tool" is a cope. The future is bleak

While I don't nessecarily feel bad about generating 9000 pictures of Hatsune Miku in questionable poses rather than commissioning a human artist, i DO refuse to post my generations. I recognize the time and effort spent by human artists to painstakingly draw every piece of thier work, and I don't feel like drowning them out further in an already ai-polluted internet. It might not be much (cause my 9000 pales in comparison to like millions posted by others) but I do my best. Stay strong artists! If they fed the AI only with (background) art pieces the studio artists had made themselves (so they have the rights to use them), then I find it ok. I know you wouldnt even know if they didn't because the end result is refined by humans, but it doesn't sit right with me if other artists' art is being used for something they did not consent to.

The short answer for me at least is no, because it’s impossible for an algorithm to be able to replicate the personality and movement that animation produced by people can, but I do feel like ai can at least help with that animating process. I feel like ai in animation should be used as less of a crutch for animators and more of a tool, animators should be looking towards ai as not something that could replace or mimic animators and more as a tool that they can use to produce animations more effectively, a great example of this is an ai software developed by Cadmium that can use as little as one coloured frame of animation and apply that same colour to the rest of the frames. Although in my opinion, ai has A LOT of growing and improving to do if it ever wants to come close to becoming useful in the realm of animation, both 2D and 3D

Look at how the animators for Spiderverse used machine learning to assist with repetitious drawings, which made that movie's blend of 3D and hand-drawn visuals possible. Machine learning can help artists, no question about it. But the stuff that's currently touted as "AI" are large models that generate output whole-cloth by storing a gigantic database of original work in the form of parameters for a software architecture inspired by neurons. These generations thereby fall into one of two pitfalls: It either looks technically impressive when there's already a shit-ton of input data that looks the same, or the generation looks off and like a superficial, poorly executed mix of things. So this amplifies stuff that's popular a million fold while providing no real value of its own in return, except for the novelty of superficially satisfying any mix of two or three concepts without any of the execution that would make the result more than the sum of its parts. The amount of energy (both computationally and psychologically) we are wasting on these slightly interesting yet deeply unethical experiments is mind-boggling.

Honestly, AI art is a tool just like anything else. Just because you can make a movie entirely of CGI, doesn't mean it'll look authentic enough to be likeable in a decades time. I think it's best for artists to use it as a way to cut back time, or to use it for reference (like I do). And for animators, if it gets good enough, it could eliminate crunch time, and make your life a million times easier! I just don't expect non animations to thrive off of it, since you have to at least make SOME effort to make it as authentic as possible, but nonetheless, as time drags on. Maybe the only thing we really need to do is adapt. I'm not gonna be on the side of history where people reject the coming change and revolt against it. Neither am I gonna be a shill and say AI is gonna solve all your marital problems. You have to find that fine line, as should everybody.

Here is the thing you need to keep in mind. AI improves at an exponential rate. It’s not a matter of IF it’s a matter of WHEN. An understanding of real world motion is possible and probably easier for AI than us. I mean do you know the intricacies behind how a sunset forms based on the wavelength warping from the atmosphere? Probably not. But an AI can replicate the conditions perfectly. Hell, it already has. AI WILL get to stage where it has the ability to replace every single medium. At the end of the day, everything can be measured (yes including emotion, we just don’t understand the relationships between hormones but an AI would with enough time) and if it can be measured, AI can be replicate it. I’m of the belief that AI using art as a reference is the same as an artist using it as a reference. But even if you are of the misinformed belief that AI cuts and pastes existing art to Frankenstein it together (which just shows how little of an understanding people have of how AI functions) that still is an ENTIRE GENRE IN ART. We don’t call collages art, we don’t call restyling theft, we don’t call using reference images theft, so why does AI get different treatment? The main issue of AI is the copyright of it. It’s the whole issue of if you take a picture of the Mona Lisa you own the rights to the picture of the Mona Lisa but not the rights to the Mona Lisa. So it’s my opinion that any AI generated work should be in the public domain. Because the AI made the art and not the person running the program, technically the AI has the rights to the art. But non-humans don’t have the right to hold copyright (see the monkey taking a photograph example) So long story short, AI will become indistinguishable from every medium PERIOD and the rate at which it improves is getting faster. Using reference material isn’t theft. We need to ensure that running an AI continues to not give you the rights to the art it produces.

Thing is, AI is a tool for a world we do not live in. It's a tool designed for a world where animators and other artists are fairly compensated or, better yet, don't have to give a shit about compensation because there's no such thing as compensation, everyone is just cared for and can do whatever they want. It's a tool for a post-scarcity utopia, not a capitalist hellscape. And we're not in a post-scarcity utopia. If this were that post-scarcity utopia, I'd be all for AI art and animation advancing. It'd be great. It'd be amazing, even. But it's not. We're not in that world. We're not anywhere near that world. We're in a capitalist hellscape. If AI stuff goes favorably to corporations- which it likely will- and if it keeps getting better- which we can't guarantee at this point, we never can- then it's not going to take the weight of background work off the shoulders of animators or improve their situation. It's going to make executives demand ten times as much productivity from half the people. They'll be paid less while more is required. They'll lose bargaining power (if they had any to begin with). They'll be crushed under ever-higher expectations and damn the consequences. In the society we currently exist within, the absolute best thing that the AI art world can do right now is implode so hard that AI art falls off the map entirely and is never heard from again.

Corporations simply don't care, and will monetize the fuck out of this once they figure out how to do it reliably, and people who say otherwise are coping hard af. Yes, it can be a useful tool, but I highly doubt actual corporations would use it that way. Btw, the anime he used as an example for this never credited the actual artist's who's art were used in the machine to pump out the AI background. They only credit them as +Human, rather than their actual names, which is one of the many reasons it has been criticized.

AI technology has undoubtedly made significant advancements in various creative industries, including art and animation. AI algorithms can generate impressive artwork and even assist in the animation process. However, it's important to remember that AI is a tool created and programmed by human artists and developers. It does not replace the creativity and artistic vision that animators bring to their work. Art and animation are not just about technical proficiency; they involve storytelling, emotion, and the ability to connect with an audience on a deeper level. While AI can automate certain processes and assist in generating visuals, it lacks the intuition, experience, and the human touch that animators bring to their craft. Furthermore, the creative process is not solely about the end result but also about the journey of creation. Animators spend countless hours honing their skills, studying human movement, and perfecting their techniques. They contribute their unique perspectives, ideas, and interpretations to their work, making it a personal and meaningful expression of their artistic abilities. It's important to recognize and appreciate the contributions of both AI and human animators. They can coexist and complement each other, with AI assisting in certain aspects of production while human animators bring their creativity and artistic sensibilities to the table. Ultimately, it is the collaboration between humans and technology that can lead to innovative and awe-inspiring results in the world of animation.

All in all the process Wit Studio used is probably a perfect example of how to use it as a tool rather than a replacement.
