This was entirely edited, and was supposed to be exported, in 48fps, not 50. Funny thing is, Premiere simply doesn't allow custom frame rates in its export window, despite supporting it as a sequence setting. I could have exported the Premiere file into After Effects and added the sequence to the render cue, but I couldn't because AE threw me an error every time I tried. That, combined with the legitimately unbelievable amount of bugs and errors and crashes left me feeling so exhausted and numb that I ultimately decided it was worth sacrificing one 25th of a second's worth of timing here and there. If you catch any editing errors, that'd be why. Oh well!!

Fantastic rant, I love it! And you're absolutely right. I love how you underline the intent of the artist. Those who would seek to replace artists with machine learning and AI clearly don't understand what art is for. Replace stuff that people don't want to do, or can't do. But people get joy (and their livelihood) from creating art, and they want to do it. It's one of the things that make us human. I'm no Luddite, and I love using new tools to create my animation. But when it starts to encroach upon the fulfillment that I get from creating, then no thanks! You might argue that this is just interpolation and chill out. But my response to that is just wait, this is just getting started.

Low FPS animation has a very nice, cartoony charm to it. High FPS animation gives off energy of something that has been worked hard on, and should be taken seriously. Low FPS animations that have had their FPS boosted by an AI make me feel like I am experiencing eyeball cancer.

I agree to a certain point. With higher HRz in media and technology it's often jaring for me to watch something old at 12 - 24 frames. It looks stuttery when watching something that was made for 60fps or higher then watching something that's old. Almost like bad stop motion at times. Dragon Prince on Netflix was like that for me even if people liked it, I couldn't get into it. But I do agree that an AI doing inbetweens is an inaccurate way to fix this.

  • @KaneyoriHK

Ok like, to clarify, for 2D animation it's awful, but it's just a common thing in 3D, but in that it's all motion paths and Inverse Kinematics. However, that doesn't mean interpolation isnt a technical factor in how it works. What I think is bad, is the loss of intention. 2D animation is all about each frame being intentional, an algorithm is non-intentional. It does not know technique or art direction. It is simply trying to replicate something, often poorly. The lack of intention is the problem, and obviously, that right goes to the artist, not someone else to hash on later. It was not done that way intentionally, so dont fuck with it.

@@clray123 The reason Google translate doesnt work as well as it needs to for human standards is because of the model it uses to translate. They use transformer models, which are giant networks of what are called attention matrices to try to be able to understand language and especially context. And with hundreds of millions of datapoints and months of computation time spent training on the most powerful supercomputers in the world these models can only get somewhat close to being accurate. And these models are approaching a limit as to how good they can be, as in order to increase accuracy for Google translates model by 0.15%, the amount of data used must be doubled. They're experiencing diminishing returns. That's because they dont model language the way that language actually exists, the way that humans and linguists have been modeling language for thousands of years - by turning sentences into dependency trees. Using dependency trees and starting from a linguistic standpoint rather than a computational standpoint to model language the way humans understand it is the way to go to create a translation model that can exceed the current models capabilities with far less time, data, and resources.

And not even all gamers. I've heard some people appreciate details like Monster Hunter games (at least in the PSP days) freezing animations for a frame or two when you hit a monster with a chonky weapon so you feel the impact more. I think the people who only care about blindly maximizing framerates are the ones who need (and understand) them the least because most of what they play is more of a cinematic experience instead of something with super tight input timing. The reason gaming consoles have been running with 30fps by default for so long is because the console target audience doesn't really care that much, and games where it actually matters like fighting or racing games were just running at 60 anyway.

i'm not sure but i think sometimes animators reuse frames or create their own custom "lip libraries" for all common sounds to save on time. I can imagine that this dude would just have to load an image for each mouth frame and that's it, though i'm no animator.

I just had this recommended to me. I am one of those gamers you mentioned, but I can 100% relate to how you feel because I grew up gaming at 60FPS. (Well, 50 because I’m Australian but that’s another can of worms.) 60FPS combined with simple gameplay resulted in VERY precise controls. The push for 30FPS because “It looks better now!” at the cost of control infuriates me to no end! And there are even “remasters” of games like Tales Of Symphonia that half the framerate! What I’m saying is, the next time you get one of these gamer types saying “This would look better at 60FPS” tell them that’s like you telling them their game would look better at 12FPS. They’ll probably have an aneurysm.

Exactly. Ai is usually never the problem, it's how it's used. Even in software engineering, people have said at some point code will write itself. That hasn't happened (at a decent scale anyway) because someone needs to actually design a program. Same with animation. AI can't do shit if the animators don't set a solid foundation. Anyway you look at it, AI can just be an optional tool for animators.

  • @weirdogirl1275

You want the puncher, especially his punch, to look solid like a battering ram and the person getting punched to look like he’s somewhere between jello and an actual person. If you are really going slow-motion for the punch itself, lean more into the jello factor. It makes it look soooooo funny and can really give a good comedic break amongst the intense fighting scenes. If you want it to retain intensity, pay more attention to the punches actually connecting and give the punched a really big reactive motion, like launching them across the space of the scene from the power of that punch. Btw, you should take all of this with a grain of salt, because I’ve never animated an action sequence in my life.

THANK YOU! It's about time someone brought this up. I feel like a lot of people don't understand that animation being 60 FPS (or more) isn't really the problem, but rather these algorithms that do a terrible job at interpolating the frames. If a talented animator decided to animate in 60 FPS and made every frame with attention and care I'm sure the end result would look fantastic. The higher frame rate just wouldn't usually be worth the effort. Maybe someday there will be an AI that can create perfect inbetweens but it would need to understand on a human level what the animation actually represents and how it should move. Edit: Though even then it wouldn't really suite all animation styles.

I can see the ways in which models could be construed to generate amazing interpolation frames and be setup in a way in which the artist can take the generation as a baseline and modify it until they feel it is perfect. All these new AI models being available to the public is a great thing, as long as they can be used as a tool and not a replacement.

Specifically it's gamers who don't understand there's a time and place for maximizing frames. :L

Yeah we really need to learn that high frame rates only really matter in games

I just don't get the obsession, but then I largely can't tell the difference and when I can the higher ones are jarring to look at. But then I grew up on CRT TVs and prefer indie titles ( potato computers most my life and the rise of microtransactions), but outside that field most media isn't meant to go that frame rate. I basically have next to no experience with it so it looks like something is playing wrong when I do see it. Leaving things as the creators intended is generally how I like things anyway, the only real exceptions being if you can't get it that way without spending an arm and a leg or it's not possible. Niether really applying to this.

I’m on Xbox one X I run 120 FPS with my monitor and if I ever switch it down to 60 FPS which I have a few times by accident it feels like your lagging almost or something is just off

3D animator here, interpolation is actually used in 3d animation (sometimes, not always) usually for high framerate stuff. This is because of 2 reasons as far as I can tell. First, the interpolation is built off of interpolating actual vertices, edges, faces, and bones in the program, so it's MUCH more accurate for animation than pixel data. Second, we can actually control how the interpolation works with something called a Graph Editor, which allows us to fix the Timing and Easing problem you brought up as well as interpolate different things (X location, Y Scale, Z Rotation, etc) differently.

Yeah, I was looking for someone to say this. It's most obvious in games, but you could export a lot of CG animations at a different frame-rate too. It generally looks like 100x better than tweening in 2D animation does (not saying tweening is always the devil) but like, tons of frames in a lot of CG animations are from the skeletal animation being interpolated, and they do not look out of place at all.
