Will A $20 Air Cooler Keep My Van Cool?

#sleepaid
With warmer weather approaching, we should be looking at ways to stay cool. There are lots of inexpensive air conditioners or coolers being sold. And I bought one to try. It was about $20 and I bought it at Grocery Outlet, the discount grocery store chain.
The packaging of this one is labeled as a “cooler”. But other brands label their products as “air conditioners”. I prefer to call these types of devices “Swamp Coolers” as they cool by adding moisture to the air.
I waited until the weather warmed up and then let this cooler run in my van as I went about my day. It was only 80°F today but it was a good test.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.

I am an hvac tech and half of the reason an A/C works is that it is a dehumidifier. You are in a dry area so you may benefit from a bit of moisture but for the vast majority might even want to go with some kind of dehumidifier with a fan if you can spare the energy and that in itself will make the space more comfortable .

Excellent video as always! I do something to stay cool on extra hot days that I read in a blog. At first I turned my nose up at it and said I wouldn't like it. HOWEVER, I got desperate one hot day and tried it and now I always do it on those crazy days. The blog said to dampen your shirt with water. Not soaking so you want to ring it out almost dry again. Then wear it and sit in front of a fan. The blog was from someone who lives in desert climates. It works sooooo good. I love it now on crazy hot days that sneak up on you. Sometimes you cant even tell it is wet by looking at it. Maybe if you ever get too un comfy you will try it? Sorry for the long comment but I am long winded and it cant be helped. 😁

Scott, you know what is so popular are vans that are black. Black vans and warmer summers, maybe not such a good idea. I like that your van is white with a ventilation system and no windows that let the heat in. You've got a good set-up. A little air conditioning would really help as well. Your a schmart cookie😊

Thank you for another chill video. ❤😂 even though we have never been to... I love my Bodum Melior Gooseneck Water Kettle, 27oz. I don't use flames inside my Jeep Patriot or the Minivan. I have a bigger power station though and the kettle is 120V and pulls up to 1000w. Water boils in 2 to 5 min. I only have 100Watts of rigged solar, but the Bluetti AC180, power station recharges in less than 2 hours from about 50%. I don't have a fridge that I have to power though. I'm not full time either and I live in a place with both extremes of weather and use my vehicles to get away from the extreme cold during the winters. I don't mind heat though... well as long as it stays below 100*F. It does that during the summer months on occasion here. If I didn't have responsibilities here I would not stick around here as much as I do... Thank you again for the video. Stay cool...

A lot of the heat in a van (or building, for that matter) is the vehicle and the stuff in it that's at the ambient temperature. You can cool the air but everything else is still putting out heat. My method for dealing with heat is pointing the front of the van north (away from the sun) opening the driver window, the side door and one of the back doors. If there isn't a natural breeze I turn on a fan. And if that's not enough, I too go to where it isn't as hot. Stay cool, amigo.

I live in very arid desert near death valley ca. Evaporative coolers work great here in our average of 9% summer humidity. But even if the rain is coming, or something, & our humidity gets a just little bit higher, the swamp cooling actually makes it worse. To me, way-high heat without humidity, is much easier to live in than even moderate heat with humidity.

Been full time for the last 3 yrs, and ur correct about if u want to stay cool best is to be on the west coast. I aways thought that these mini swamp coolers were a waste of money. When the temp is above 80 degress in my rig there is 3 things i do. Park in the shade, put up shades for front window, and pull out my oscillating usb fans. Also I usually stay away from drinking coffee during the summer and drink more water. See ya down the road.

Yup, they are much more efficient in dry climates. Your point about having it directly on you is well made - in your van, that should be pretty easy to do. Also interesting observation about the water heater - good to know. That makes sense really - making things hot is expensive, so limiting it's use makes sense. Be well.

I'm in Vancouver BC, so PNW. I call them swamp coolers, too, and I've avoided them because the summers get humid enough... Although not as bad as the Great Lakes region nor the southeast US. Someone I know was raving about theirs, so on a whim I bought one of these $20 mini gadgets from Amazon and I'm really surprised how well it works! Having it blowing on me was MUCH cooler than just a fan. On a completely unrelated note, I want to thank you SO MUCH for your video in the past about using Dr Bronner's (I can't remember if it was conditioner or hand lotion) on one's hair! I can't find the hair cream locally and it's too expensive online, but it's essentially the same ingredients as the hand lotion LOL, just thinner. WHAT A GAME CHANGER! These variants of the new one you got don’t drip water on the filter and only spray mist. What I found to be a huge help in the summer is pouring some water in that pull out tray the filter sits in so those little sponge pads leech it up and gives more of a swamp cooler like effect. It doesn’t look like it but the little ledges around the side allow it to do so, I find it lasts 3 hours or so and is a good boost before going to bed. Also that white on the old one isn’t mold just calcium buildup, I get rid of that with a little vinegar wash but replacements are still sold on eBay too.

  • @StaticCamperVan

    @StaticCamperVan

Yes, I should have been clearer about this type needing to be wet first. But this particular cooler drips water between the fan and filter. It was most definitely mold on the old filter. The growing fuzzy legs were the tip off

My mini splits, at the hiuse, have a dehumidifier setting seperate from the AC setting. The humidity level makes a huge difference in how the air feels. Plus we've never had such high humidity here, so the house, and eveything in it, likes the lower humidity.

I have the Chillwell running on my desk right now and used it all last summer and it's great. I did put ice in it yesterday but not this morning and it's really cool. I no longer freeze the part you wet and put in the freezer because I don't think it helps that much but I love mine. :)

We had some extreme summers last couple years and i live on the 3rd floor of a building with no AC, all the heat collected up there and it got HOT. I found reflective in the windows blocked the sun well and a couple well placed fans kept air moving was just enough to stay comfortable. Also i thnk your body acclimates a bit and that hot weather doesnt feel so hot. I was suprised how well it felt , and felt bad for people who got used to AC all summer, if you let your body acclimitize and you get some good air flow, keep the sun out and that should do it. It kept me cool during some extreme heat here in the Great lakes region., Thankfully last summer wasnt so hot and looks like this one will be the same (thank you El Nino) that being said , a vehicle is a different story and im not sure how just ventilation would do but i suspect might be just enough. Ive been practising living in a car before making the jump and could feel the heat the last few days as well and its not even warm yet, couldnt imagine it the dead of summer but i guess thats what happens when youre car is a greenhouse basically with all those windows, well most cars. The hybrid toyotoa priuses have this climate control everyone raves about just for this kind of situation, but not very spacious living.

In my small RV, I'm thinking about adding a 12v AC for summertime. That said, I do have a little USB rechargeable swamp cooler (with a water reservoir and ice packs) and it does help add some moisture to the dry air as well as cool us down over here in eastern Washington.

Cool❤I just have been using a O2cool fan which is $20 and can plug into solar , I have the heavy duty built suit case with all multi-use extensions I only paid $50 at Harbor Freights and the fan will also run on D batteries, purchase the fan at Walmart and I've been doing this 12 plus years full time and since my heat stroke, 7 years ago I am also very heat sensitive😮 oh my gosh whatever you do, do not injure those gorgeous hands, please. Now I have looked at that AC and I have looked at expensive solar panels and power Banks and yada yada yeah 😂 however I still use ice in an old fashioned ice chest😂 I'm not a KZreadr and I just like to have enough Sun to charge the DVD player, Walmart. And for now ET and I are laying low❤ you're definitely easy on the eyes and may you have a beautiful week Scott❤ this land is my land this land is your land❤

I use a very similar swamp cooler. In fact I have one on the side table next to my recliner chair and one next to my bed and one for a guest next to the couch. The filter thing with the sponges on mine come out so that they can be soaked in cold water and then set back in so it gives more cooler air.

It can be more effective to spray some mist onto yourself or use an evaporative cooling towel and point a fan at yourself to get more targeted evaporative cooling. It must get pretty rough in there at times. I think I'd go as far as to put an airconditioner at the passenger seat window and hooking up to shorepower for the worst of it, multistory and underground carparks might be a nice place to escape some heat too. Wishing you lots of shade.

I bought that little swamp cooler last summer when my central a/c went out. It was better when you put ice in the water AND put the filter in the freezer for a bit. But the filter thaws out quickly in 90° weather. Also, it’s really only enough air movement to cool your face. It helped me in a pinch but I still used ice packs & cool showers to get through about a week in Florida August heat.
