Wilkerson: Trump's Generals Aren't Saviors, They're Dangers

President Trump's deference to military leaders like John Kelly and James Mattis on civilian matters threatens democracy, says Col. Lawrence Wilkerson

It wasn't Voltaire that said that. The statement "To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize" is often attributed to Voltaire, the French Enlightenment writer, historian and philosopher. In fact, it is something said by Kevin Alfred Strom in his program, "All America Must Know the Terror That is Upon Us" (1993)

Always great to hear from Col. Wilkerson, I would really like to hear his take on the north Korea crisis, because the rumors do intensify. I read for example that Gen. Mattis is the only senior trump official opposed to a strike on North Korea. So I'd really like to hear what the chances are for war and since Col Wilkerson knows the military of trumps cabinet, what their reasoning may be.

Colonel Wilkerson is one of the best, most insightful commentators on the military - and other topics - that we have! I have noted - with deep interest and dismay - that most of the MSM outlets do NOT feature him as a guest on their programs. It would seem that they do not like his sober and honest assessment of the military, among other things!

When people refer to the adults keeping Trump in check they used to name Mattis, Tillerson and Kelly. I've noticed they've begun to leave Kelly out of the responsible adults in the room after he appeared at the podium and like a 3rd rate horror movie we find that he has been bitten by the monster and is now a carrier.

He stands correct! The arm forces and Washington bribes those into enlistment and also to extend for retention as I had a secondary job in my unit as a liaison officer for retention of our unit members to stay and extend prior to their ETS... I would be told to offer a bonus reenlistment by the allowed amount for the extension of 4 more years as they would receive 50% up front and the remainder would be paid out in the last 2 years of quarterly payments that will show in their LES and all members would get a 3 to 6 % pay increase of every 6 months but that was later discontinued because of the larger bonuses for enlistment, and/or retention, and the GI Bill... It is all crazy amounts since the Gulf War compared to my GI Bill back in the day was only $5,800 total within my service from 1987 to 1999. The so-called reference to say that those who join are the greatest that this country provides is complete BS!... the majority that enlists and including those who are forced by court judges to enlist as a plea deal to stay out of prison; are a poverty class and minor criminal offenders including those have poor education but have to least have a GED passing... the rest is broken up for joining for many reasons as many who goes to Boot Camp is shared as all of the DIs [ Drill Sgt's ] ask that question to everyone to share out loud why they joined? I was shocked to see the deficiencies of those that enlisted as some of them don't belong and some were just too psycho... there were even those that belong to KKK, Aryan, and Neo-Nazis groups and even gang members in our midst! Sometimes it is family tradition or patriotism for both that serves at the capacity of non-Commissioned officers of rank to those that make the grade or is privileged to becoming Commissioned Officers? Some of the biggest assholes comes from the very cadets from officer academies like West Point... and these jerks did not have any true rank until they graduate and to boss around military personnel for their intern experience in basic training, A Schools, and/or even attached to a permanent party that they may serve in? Even when I was an E-4 in my unit was a cadet that was given butter-bar authority that bossed around up to 1st Sgt?!? I say again that person had no real rank until they get their Commission!

hmm.. I have thought about the sentiments behind the Col. closing statements.. and... any hyperbole aside.. I'm forced to agree. One thing so many people doing analysis fail to take into account is that technological advances are far more geometric than linear. And... well... the consequences of that apply to the miltary, et al.

he's bringing up a good point that i've brought up in the past. but, is it not true that american military policy has not substantially changed in 40 years? clinton really frightened me on this point, because she seemed to be reading a script. and, trump just blew my mind - because he repeatedly demonstrated that he had no idea what he was talking about. it wasn't until the last few weeks that the narrative flipped. for months - longer than that, really - it seemed like clinton was just a front, and trump just had no idea. i mean, he wouldn't even go to briefings. it was preposterous. but, in the end, nobody should be surprised that trump's foreign policy is not substantively different than clinton's, the differences coming down strictly to domestic politics. i guess larry would know better than i would. but, i think this is a discussion that people much older than me should have been having in the 70s and 80s.

I don't have time to say all that I want to say. But I can't leave without saying the bonuses these soldiers receive ARE NOT BRIBES! To say that is an insult to them & it shows a lack of respect and an ignorance of the danger these brave soldiers live with both day & night. It's money they receive so that their families have at least a little help for the time they're gone. If you think it's a bribe, ask yourself how much your life is worth, would you be willing to lose limbs, eyes or mental health or have horrible facial scars just for $40,000? Also, we need the armed forces but we also need Our Presidents to fight only just wars, chose their battles wisely, and use diplomacy first.

Soldiers are trained killers. They tend to kill people when they are deployed. I imagine that the majority of the grunts are from the poorest section of society. Wilkerson said there are more soldiers from Alabama, (population 5 million) than LA, Chicago and New York combined (population 25 million). Work it out. The Alabamans have a financial imperative that forces them to take the only job available that pays semi respectable money and the risk they take is that they will survive being maimed or killed. Rich people do not join the army in times of war. Daddy makes sure that they have some medical problem that is vague enough, like bone spurs, that they never have to serve. (See Donny small hands Trump). The poor have less choice available to them.

Kelly appears to have misspoken. When he said, 01:12 “And they volunteer to protect our country when there’s nothing in our country anymore that seems to suggest that self service to the nation is not only appropriate but required”. Yes, an intentional patriotic and heartfelt statement to fool those who have little future. What Kelly should do is to define “our country” and “nation”. These terms don’t include the American people as there is no real threat of invasion. The only threat that exists is the blow-back from Anglo-American Imperial aggression to advantage the oligarchs. So Kelly needs to clearly state that when he uses the words “our country” and “nation”, he means the interests of the international oligarchs. Just as using “national security” as a justification to ensure the American people remain ignorant of the atrocities of the oligarchs. Wilkinson appears to be telling the truth. I still believe his patriotism is like Christianity - mostly applicable to hypocrites and criminals but Wilkinson does point out these recruits join because of Thatcher’s TINA principle - There Is No Alternative. I feel for those who have lost loved ones but it is incumbent on those who serve to understand they are not fighting for their country; they are putting themselves in harm’s way to benefit international oligarchs. Those who sign up should be clear about the fact they are part of an aggressive declining Empire; and when an Empire is in decline, is when an Empires become increasingly dangerous. So Wilkerson is right; the oligarchs take advantage of these poor fools and when the few that are intelligent and non-psychopathic enough to understand they are killing for the interests of the elite, many can’t handle that reality. If Wilkerson’s memory is failing and his recollection of the imperial attack on Iraq is waning, maybe he should go back and get a history lesson from his previous employer - Powell. You would expect many would get a hint of the elite-Main Street patriotic apartheid when they discover none of the elite’s family members are sent to the front line. You would also expect those who decide to enlist would question the obvious propaganda generated by the establishment; the media coverage of sports stadiums being paid millions of dollars to falsely tribute veterans in the stands or question the quality of veterans care. No, the oligarch minions that snatch these recruits from the wrong side of the track manipulate these poor fools with promises of career and their chance to serve their country when in reality it is a chance to die for the interests of the international oligarchs. For the ones that are desperate for an income I can understand, but for the ones that get caught in the establishment’s emotional trap, I feel sorry. Knowing that you have killed innocents and destroyed their land to profit the international oligarchs must be devastating to any honorable man. Where Wilkinson fails the audience is where he continues the patriotism propaganda to continue the oligarchical narrative. If Wilkinson was honest he would admit the Department of Defense is a misnomer; it should be called the Imperial Department of Oligarchical Offense. At least this would explain the devastation in the Middle East and Africa.
