Wildlife at Turtle Pool Hide, Huai Khayeng Nature Park, Kanchanaburi, Thailand

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

This is my first camera film from Turtle Pool at Huai Khayeng Nature Park - my conservation project in Thong Pha Phum, Kanchanaburi, Thailand. We made this small artificial pool at the end of February start of March 2023 - the height of the hot dry season. I placed a hide near the pool to get the wildlife used to it and then sat in that hide about 3 weeks later and again a few days after that. I've already published some footage from a camera trap that I placed near the pool, but this clip contains the footage I captured from the hide with my Sony A1.

Wow... thank you so much. I literally finished making a bigger and better pool at Turtle Pool just yesterday. There is still water around in the forest as it is only about 3 weeks since the rainy season finished, but soon we will turn on the tap to Turtle Pool and hopefully a whole bunch of birds and other animals will use it to drink and bathe again during the long hot dry season. For your information, I made another pool called Rocky Pool earlier this year, and this one will be enlarged and improved over the next few weeks too. After that, I hope to spend a lot of time in my hides getting film of all the lovely wildlife.... so watch out for that.

Thank you so much Gijs. I hope you are surviving the European winter. Yes, indeed. I can hardly believe how well the land is doing. I have even got camera trap footage of pangolins there now. Actually, I just got in the door after five days in and around Kaeng Krachan National Park. I spent some time looking at the old hides there, and also at some new hides that have been made. I picked up some interesting ideas. I have started remaking my pools. Last year they were just made very quickly with some concrete, but I replaced Turtle Pool with a more natural looking one by blending colours with the concrete and adding more logs etc. I can't wait to get the hide up and start filming there.

@@thailandwild4897 Hello Darryl,i see that you are very active and great to hear that you are helping the wildlife and birds to survive in sometimes extreme conditions and you get the benefit from it to film them very closely.A win-win situation!! It must very exiting to see how the wildlife developes I like the winter but only when the sun shines and unfortunately not much sun here for almost a month but i am not depressed!!! Haha.... Greetings Gijs

Wow... I can't tell you how much I appreciate your comment today. I am actually at Huai Khayeng Nature Park at the moment. It is a 30-hectare reserve that I have been working on for the last 15 years, but there is so much work today. I reworked Turtle Pool yesterday and saw a turtle and 7 plumbeous water snakes there! I'll try to finish the artificial pool at Turtle Pool tomorrow, ready for the coming dry season. I've just come out of the land for a break after a long hard grass cutting session, so it was so nice to see your enthusiastic comment... thank you. Oh... I just saw the most beautiful Rhabdophis siamensis.... the reddest neck I have ever seen, at the area I call Civet Stream, where I have camera trapped civets in the past. Anyway, I will go back to sit in my hide until dark - I know there is a leopard cat on my land, and I'm hoping for some footage. Good luck with your trip.

@@thailandwild4897 Thank you so much! I would love to be able to visit that natural park you are talking about in the future, I send you a lot of encouragement for the work, make it as easy as possible and good luck with the pool! Those snakes are beautiful, I hope to have the same luck and see some here, right now I'm in Chiang Mai, I visited a couple of natural parks here for two days but I don't know this yet so I haven't been very lucky. Wow... a leopard cat, they are incredible, I hope you see it and I can see the photos in the future :)

I'm not at all good at identifying birds. That bird at 0:56 looks so close to a yellow cardinal. I just learned that yellow exist. I thought all cardinals were red! I love that little mohawk! It shows I know so little about bird species. I love birds. I've even drawn some. Alot of them are so beautiful! There's just so many species and so many look so similar! The only bird I don't particularly like is mourning doves. I can be impressed on how loud and how far their coo can travel, but when one is outside your window at 5 a.m, being someone who is a night owl and not a morning person, makes me yell all kinds of profanity. 🤣

I have some knowledge about most groups of wildlife, but birds are perhaps the most challenging group because there are a lot of VERY knowledgeable people out there. I have a lot of serious birder friends in Thailand, so although I'm fairly sure of ID in most cases, I tend to err on the side of caution. Last week at my house in the forest I was woken up by a flock of 30 Hill Mynas, now that is really something to 'crow' about.
