Wilderness Survival: Identifying a Clean Natural Spring

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Finding safe drinking water is a top priority for survival anywhere. Even a day without clean water can have a profound negative impact on one’s health and severely reduce the ability to work, collect food, etc. In this video I show one of my favorite freshwater springs I recently found while exploring a wilderness area. This is a seasonal spring that only produces water during the rainy season so it is important to have several options for water sources.

    This reminds me life of El Salvador. Sinks and faucets are relatively new, and if my parents(or anyone for that matter) wanted water, they would have to climb through the jungle and locate a mountain spring. And that was just normal daily life. Nothing primitive about it though, it was just a closer to nature culture.

I mean, I do drink from a faucet or water bottle, but seeing that looks not only content, but just getting that spring literally straight from nature seems to have more .....(i don't know the exact word to use) benefit, or not just clean water, but what was informed in the captions. Modern society has come a long way, but it doesn't seem to provide what nature has, is what I think I'm trying to say. It can be copied, but not be truly like the original.

    A warning to nature hikers: filter your water! Years ago, a friend was hiking in the mountains in Colorado and drank from crystal clear brooks running down the mountain. Unfortunately, beaver were living (and sh*tting) upriver and my friend got a terrible case of giardia from the contaminated water. He was deathly ill and nailed to the toilet for nearly two weeks. The cheapest hiking filter would have saved my friend from those evil microscopic parasites. My friend, while puking and crapping his life away, swore to return to that mountain and go on an anti-beaver pogrom the likes of which those aquatic rodents have not seen since the mountain man fur trading times.

    Are there any signs to look for when searching for a spring? Are there any springs that can be contaminated nonetheless?

  • @Koreviking

  • @ChadZuberAdventures

    @ChadZuberAdventures

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes, I believe that springs can be contaminated. A spring that travels through an area that has or had mining activity could be potentially dangerous. The same if it travels through an agriculture area. I look for springs that either appear to have traveled a long distance (a kilometer or more) through the earth or near the top of a mountain or hill. I also look for springs that are difficult to reach such as between rocks or steep slope that would disuade animals from using them. There are many factors to consider but I have drank water directly and unfiltered from springs and seeps in the tropics, mountains, and deserts. So far I never became sick. Of course, it is a good idea to always use a filter or boil the water to be sure but that is not always a possibility so we should at least know how to be as safe as possible without filters or boiling too.
