Wild Stringdom w/John Petrucci: Jan 14 - Visualizing Melodic Shapes on the Fretboard

This month, I'd like to delve deeper into concepts for expanding scalar ideas across the fretboard. As in the previous columns, I'll demonstrate how to move diagonally across the fretboard to connect scale positions, an approach that I employ to a great extent to play melodic phrases and solos.
Let's start with a series of phrases that are all based on the E Aeolian mode, or E natural minor scale (E Fs G A B C D). FIGURE 1 details a series of three different three-note phrases, each played in a three-notes-per-string pattern and starting with the index finger. I begin in seventh position and play through the first six notes of E Aeolian.
In bar 2, I shift up to ninth position and play a six-note pattern that begins on the fifth degree of E Aeolian, B, sounding the notes B C D E Fs G. Finally, I move up to 11th position to play a six-note pattern beginning on the second, or ninth, Fs, sounding the notes Fs G A B C D. The high D at the end of the phrase is useful, because it can easily be bent up one whole step to the E root. By connecting all three patterns this way, I am moving up the fretboard in a diagonal path that covers a lot of range.

    +Musta Krakish I sincerely hope you find it. Honestly good tone isn't hard to find. I found good tone in the form of a Maxon OD808 [or any boost] in between a nice two pickup guitar and a tube amp with reverb. That's really all it takes. Don't let tone stand between you and playing nonstop.

    Thanks very much for this informative lesson Mr. Petrucci! I personally play many arpeggios in my leads and build riffs and solos off of them so I always look for new patterns to work with and this pattern you've shown us is very versatile. Inverted chords like what you played really spice up a melody as well - thanks for the ideas.

    If you play apeggios and know how to build riffs and solos from a Emin scale then you dont need this lesson, because you should know Emin patterns already, as this strictly is for beginner intermediate lesson simple , unless you like to hear petuccie explanation? , John used to work in a deli (his family owned the deli , although im not 100% sure?) He made sandwiches for custormers.. First time id ever seen petuccie in guitar mag 1990 i believe it was,

    Danny Hood I play the Amin often but the Emin not as such so this lesson benefited me since I'm going to work with those patterns now. Seeing how Petrucci executes it and how he devises riffs and melodies from it is the informative part. There's always something a guitarist can learn from a fellow one regardless of playing level - there's no limit to how much one can learn. That's why I appreciate vids like these as they also help with creativity :) I gotta brush up on my theory too!

    I almost allways start to write riffs and song structures trough this method. Pick a good scale to enhance your mood you want and just start jamming. Good stuff starts coming out. If you know your scales and theory to that point, you don't even need to be technically talented player to come up something really cool sounding stuff.

    no, there's also a gate, it's not just a pot swell. You can CLEARLY hear the noise gate doing his job on his voice mostly, it's a room gate, it's not in JP's signal chain.

  • @davidepannone6021

    @davidepannone6021

    No, the new JP that have the inbuild preamp just boost the signal a little bit, John uses it during the solos (instead of having a boosting pedal/distortion pedal in front of the amp that acts as a booster, as he used to do btw). It's the guitar world guys that have that noise gate engaged, especially in the ambient/voice mic. Just check other similar videos (like the guthrie govan's ones for example) to notice it. Thanks anyway from chiming in, cheers

    Faizul IlmI something hard to explain. sopul is that melodic singing feel of a soul singer, or great vocalist. melodic, not over stated, just from the heart, and not thought out. it can be intertwined with speed and technique, but its either there or not. satriani has soul.. neal schon has soul, andy timmons.. all technical players too, but john just doesnt have THAT like they do.. cant explain it any further than that
