    @KZread Account They were hunted to extinction for their fur. Native Americans hunted them for their meat but never wiped them out. I don't know if they would have posed a threat to people. They were mostly eating crabs, clams and fish, basically like sea otters. Imagine a weasel the size of a dog, you get a wolverine.

    @@obsChance757 Probably not as catch dogs, unless mixed with something. Rotts are descended from flock guardian types -- the opposite of catch-and-hold. But for preventing escape (that is, crossing a boundary) -- might work pretty well. Incidentally American-type Labradors (also descended from flock guardians) make excellent cat and bear dogs -- good at baying the target animal but don't dive in and get themselves killed like hounds do. I knew hound breeders who crossed Labs with their coonhounds cuz the crosses don't get drowned by savvy old raccoons like can happen to fullblooded hounds. Little-known fact: the chunky type and "blocky" heads of modern English-line show Labs came from a Rottweiler cross in the 1950s.

    When I see these other mink guys, or in this case, pig guys, it makes me appreciate even more the way you handle your dogs (and mink of course). You touch them when you're talking, you pet them, you pick them up from under their chest, you never throw them around, you are never cruel or even inconsiderate of them. These other mink guys and the pig guys, too, handle their dogs like they are furniture, like they don't have feelings. I.E. the guy who took his dog by the collar and jerked it off the atv (@4:52, 5:33). He could have just as easily waited for it to jump down, they were eager to get going, too.

    Yeah fully agree. I also didn't like that they were attached to the rv by their collars and not by a harnas. I am glad Joseph is more careful with his dogs.

    Nope. First the wolves would take out the sheep and cattle and elk. Only then would they go after high-risk prey like feral hogs. You need to look up what "wolf reintroduction" in Yellowstone actually did. They've rapidly overpopulated, and have killed 80% of the elk in the 3 adjacent states. Further, the big MacKenzie Gray wolves are _not_ native to the lower 48. The much smaller timber wolves _are_ native and they're still around ... at least so long as the big Grays aren't brought in (they kill all the smaller timber wolves and coyotes, and now you have a rabbit problem too).

    @Kurupt Force ...thanks for my learning of the day. So i see they were created in the 70s with 3 breeds(Dogo have 10)but the breed seem to be still tinkering with adding other breeds. Both these and Dogo have pointer and bull terrier as some of the breeds used to create these dogs. Also both are breed not to kill their prey but to subdue. I wonder if they have gap teeth like Dogo. That way its easier for them to breathe while holding in to their prey. They are about the same size and weight. I definitely would want to hunt with the bull arab dogs over a pitbull. Again thanks for telling me about them!

I haven't been fond of some breeders bulking it up in the last ten years and losing the ultimate athleticism they possess to make them ,look' tougher. Screw looks, fit and fit to purpose is how to breed dogs! I can't imagine using a pitbull over a Dogo for pig hunting, except perhaps that losing a pitbull to injury isn't so financially/genetically devestating as losing your Dogo? Most of the time hunting videos don't even explain why they hunt coyotes, racoons, hogs, etc, and even other people just say they love hunting just for the sake of it so it's hard not to take the animal's side and see the hunters as bad guys. I love it that you explain that the animals you hunt are destructive and it's explains a lot of my unanswered questions. It's very educational.

    A dog that I think would be really good for this kind of job would be a Rhodesian Ridgeback, those things were breed to hunt lions in Africa, so a boat would be nothing, plus there built heavy and can run fast and go for a long time. Honestly I think it would be just as effective, if not more so, to just use a couple of those dogs. But I would love to hear other opinions on this

  • @JosephCartertheMinkMan

    @JosephCartertheMinkMan

    2 жыл бұрын

    Here's the problem with dogs like that. It is close to irrelevant what the dog was bred to do 100 generations ago. What is most relevant is what a dog's parents, grandparents, and great grandparents were bred to do. Good traits are quickly lost through poor breeding practices, and breeding dogs to be nothing but pets and show dogs quickly waters down what good traits a working dog had, and soon they become useless mush. Even the most carefully bred litters often produce some puppies who aren't up to par for whatever their job may be. Without continuously testing for working qualities, and then ONLY breeding the dogs who show those necessary qualities, a breed's ability to do its job quickly diminishes with time. So breeds like Rhodesian Ridgebacks, who have been tested for nothing, and done nothing more than lay on the couch for the last 50 to 100 generations, are NOT the same dogs that their ancestors once were. They have been watered down to useless mush, good for nothing but laying on couches, or maybe catching a ball in the back yard.

    Ridgebacks would work as bay dogs in hoter climates. They don't kill the lion, they surround it with their pack so the hunter can kill them. In the place of the pbt you could use Dogo Argentino, most molossoid dogs like boxer, Cane Corso, Bullmastiff, and other powerful, energetic and fearless dogs.

    @@JosephCartertheMinkMan I do agree on that part, they aren't exactly like they used to be, I still think they could be used for there original purpose, all dogs are different, but some Ridgeback puppies with a good prey drive could in theory be trained to hunt, even if parent, grandparents, and so on weren't. For example, hunting with greyhounds isn't exactly as common as it used to be, but if a greyhound that has had no experience with hunting what so ever, sees a animal running 99% of the time it's going to chase it. And the Belgian Malinois was originally a hearing dog, along with other shepherd type dogs, ex: German Shepherd, today there mostly used in police and military, but to some extent, if you asked them to heard a flock of sheep, they would pick it up relatively quickly, mostly due to the intelligence that comes with most heading dogs, but still, pretty quickly.

    Ahhh yesssss! I used to hog hunt with dogs when I lived in South East Texas. We had catahoulas, black mouth curs, dogo/pit dogo/bulldogs. The best damn time of my life ever with the best damn dogs I’ve ever known. I still have the last one of our curs living her retirement here in New Mexico with me. She will be 12 September 16th 2021, I watched her be born! It is a whole lot of fun and beautiful to watch good dogs work. I miss it so much! Watch out now, it is addicting!

    Also, I wish we had tracking collars and an atv! We did everything on foot and had running catch dogs so we had to be fast. Our dogs were trained to be short ranged and knew not to go too far, otherwise we could not hear them or get to them. We never lost a dog!

    11:54 if you set your speed to .25, you can see a poor spider being kidnapped by the camera man. it happens within 2 seconds. i saw it SO BRIEFLY and still my spidey sense picked it up and i had to rewind to see if it was a spider... and yes... poor gal had her house destroyed and got kidnapped LOL
