Wild Elephants salutes the men who rescued their baby elephant from a ditch

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Wildlife Officials rescue baby elephant from a ditch. Elephant herd salutes the men before leaving
In Kerala, India, a baby elephant falls into a ditch (or an abandoned well) and gets trapped there. As the family of wild elephants watches and waits on the other side of the river, local people and forest officials use an earthmover to help the baby get out.
Watch when they come running and welcoming the baby, checking whether it is fine. The incredible moment then occurs when the elephant family head turns and salutes the humans, thanking them for saving their little one..
There has been some confusion on whether the elephants were actually acknowledging the rescuers or not. Numerous scientific experiments have shown that elephants are emotional beings. Elephants are known to comfort other elephants in distress and stand beside them touching with trunks and making soft sounds.
Here is a book by Virginia Morell - Animal Wise, which talks about the emotional intelligence of elephants available at amazon here -- amzn.to/2Xz0sep

..
National geographic talks about this in detail, adopted from the above book here --news.nationalgeographic.com/n...

I met an elephant once in Thailand, I specifically say 'met' because looking into this creature's eye while feeding him pineapples and bananas I knew there's someone looking back at me. After he ate all the fruits I brought he gently put his trunk around my arm like a handshake and whistled. I cried. It was the greatest moment of my life and I'll never forget it.

Im from Kerala - when the elephant raises its trunk at 3:15 the words that you hear in the background can be roughly translated to "Alright then, see you later". The thing that amazes me the most about this is that the head elephant isn't just blindly waving their trunk and leaving. They actually wait for some sort of acknowledgement before you leaving. You can see the first "wave" at 2:53, 2:59, and 3:03 before he clearly holds his trunk up and doesn't put it down until they receive acknowledgement at 3:16. To be acutely aware of the actions (or lack thereof) of other species around them is not only intelligent but incredibly perceptive.

@@dixb.floppin798 I agree. The guy operated that machine like it was part of his hand. If you watch towards the end of the video, the operator was in an elevated position; he would not seen all that was below him. So given the confined space, his line of sight and the elevated position - I say, the operator of that machine was just magnificent. IMHO, he should have received an award from the government in recognition of that effort.

Maybe elephants experience these, I mean obviously they experience these, but when they experience something to be grateful about by human standards, for them it falls under the "I like" or "this good" category of emotions. Maybe sometimes they do experience actual gratitude too. But how would they show it? Maybe with the "this good" trunk rising. I wonder if in 2000 years, while humans preserve Earth and watch over the species on it, if some species will become a more intelligent version of what they are now. @@-i6313 elephants are exceptionally intelligent. It’s scientific fact. To expand on what the OP said, elephants are large and powerful creatures: if they feel threatened, or thought the baby was in danger (considering a large amount of people were so close too), they would have been showing obvious aggressive behaviour and would be challenging the humans. They wouldn’t walk away. They would either run, but far more likely, they would charge. She knew they were helping. The BABY knew they were helping since it started pulling soil with its trunk too. When my cat wants let out of the room, he’ll sit at the door and turn around and stare at me. I get up and open the door. Before he trots out, he goes onto his back legs and rubs against my shins. He’s saying “thanks”, then he goes out. He’s not particularly touchy-feely affectionate in general 😂🤷‍♀️ If my little housecat (and they’re very smart) can understand and say thanks, then a large brained mammal with superior intelligence can acknowledge and thank rescuers of her baby 👏🏻💗

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the way the elephant gestured is a threat to "stay away" or "stay back". Google it. They didn't understand that the humans saved the baby, they understand that the baby was in great distress and that it came from where there were a lot of people.

The baby elephant cottoned on so quickly, and tried to help! Smart kid!

The moment when the elephant raises it’s trunk (again) and the crowd then cheers is an incredible moment.
