Wild Camping on Inishturk Island Mayo

A fantastic visit to the remote island of Inishturk. The boat left Roonagh Pier at 10:45am on a beautiful Friday morning and departed Inishturk again the following morning at 9:30am. This overnight trip allowed sufficient time to explore the island and soak in its wildness. There are two looped walks clearly identified which overlap. The longer route (purple) is an 8km walk starting at the harbour and provides vistas from the cliffs on the west of the island. The island map shows an additional cliff walk extending from the western viewing point cutting inland to meet the lakes further south. I did an additional loop to take in the sights along this section of the island and returned to my camp spot above the viewing point.
If solitude is what you want from a hiking and wild camping experience - Inishturk will tick the box. I met one single local person along my hike and we shared a conversation on island life. The boat over to the island had only two passengers - myself and a Catholic priest making his regular visit to the local parishioners. With a population of 57 people, the rugged and unspoilt landscape of Inishturk provides plenty of solitude to nourish and inspire.

Wow!! It's a work of art the way you've put this one together; the music, the sound of the waves and the video editing, brilliant. Surely the Tourism Board of Inishturk should be using this to promote their stunning wee island. Hats off to you Miriam, you definitely nailed it and with such a short video as well that's not easy.

Awww thanks Donna! That video was the first video that started getting a lot of views for me, another KZreadr plugged it and new people checked the channel out for the first time - always very grateful to him for that - Gerry (Walking & Wild Camping in Ireland). This was when I hadn’t the courage to speak in videos but it in fairness I didn’t even want to anyway! Sometimes I think I’d prefer to do videos like that but I’d miss the interaction and ability to connect that has come from speaking in videos too - anyway, I suppose changing it up is always possible. And doing some non talking videos once in a while is always an option…ah yes, another idea, thanks for that 😂😂

Hi Peter - I’m so out of the loop now with the satsang scene to be honest. I notice there is a ‘Satsang Ireland’ Facebook page, I’m not on Facebook myself but I googled it just now and saw they have a presence on Facebook. The posts I saw were only referring to the teacher Pamela Wilson (I’m no fan of her teachings to be honest) but I’d say if you reached out to this group on Facebook you might be able to see if they are organising events for other teachers too. In the past they had an email distribution list which would inform everyone of a schedule of planned events, I’ve no doubt something like that still exists and this group on Facebook might be able to point you in a direction! There may be various groups meeting more regularly throughout the country but are possibly aligned to particular teachers. Your Portugal trip could be good! I saw Mooji once when I was over in Tiruvannamali in Inida a good few years ago. The West will be a good place to base yourself for sure!! 👍
